Bearlodge Mountain Resort

28 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents10 acres · Sundance, WY
The Bearlodge Mountain Resort can be a quiet getaway from a hectic lifestyle, a base camp for hunting, an adventure-packed vacation, or a great spot to stay while you tour area attractions. Where "networking" is two pickups parked in the middle of the road so that their drivers can visit. Where we go grocery shopping in the woods during the fall. Where "neighbors" might live two hours away or just down the road. Where directions are given in "north and south" instead of "right and left". Life's a little slower, people a little more sincere and a handshake still means something! PLEASE READ: IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR TENT CAMPING: I don't have any shower or bathroom facilities. The closest place I know of is the Conoco a mile north of my place on Cleveland St. They have a truck stop and I'm told the shower is nice. There is a chance I won't be on site to greet you, but so far everyone has been incredibly respectful and found some great places to put up a tent. I trust you!

The best camping near Bear Butte State Park guide

Overview

About

For your next outdoor trip how about getting a little spiritual? A visit to Bear Butte State Park and its sacred site help you do just that. The park is home to the Bear Mountain, aka Mato Paha or Noahvose as it’s known to the Lakota and Cheyenne tribes. It is worshipped as a sacred site by many tribes who hold ceremonies there to this day. A bison herd roams freely around the base of the mountain, and there are offerings of prayer cloths and pouches left by the tribes on the trees. Make your own pilgrimage up the mountain on the narrow trail and take it all in. Afterwards you can settle into a campsite, go fishing, or go hiking or horseback riding around the rest of the park. This place has lots to offer whether you are seeking spiritual visions or just a mighty fine camping trip!

When to go

The ideal time to visit Bear Butte State Park is from late spring to early fall, when the weather is mild and the trails are most accessible. Winter months can be harsh, with snow and cold temperatures possibly limiting access to certain areas of the park.

Know before you go

  • Check the weather forecast before your visit, as conditions can change rapidly at Bear Butte State Park.
  • Wear appropriate footwear for hiking, as the terrain can be rugged and uneven.
  • Respect the sacred nature of the park and adhere to posted guidelines for preserving its cultural significance.
  • Wildlife is abundant; maintain a safe distance and do not feed the animals.
  • Carry enough water and snacks, as facilities may be limited within the park.
