Nestled between Big Bear Lake and Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino National Forest, Green Valley Campground makes for a scenic and relaxing mountain getaway.

The campground sits at 7,200 feet below a mix of towering fir, pine, and cedar trees, home to both RV and tent sites with picnic tables, fire rings, flush toilets, and drinking water that provide just the right amount of convenience. Green Valley Lake, a private, fee-based lake offers boating, fishing, and swimming just a mile away, while a general store nearby provides groceries, fishing gear, and camping supplies.

Tips for snagging a campsite reservation

  • Of Green Valley’s 37 campsites, 26 are reservable six months in advance online or by calling (877) 444-6777.
  • The remaining 11 sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Make reservations early during the peak of summer, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, when the campground is known to book up.
  • When to go

Green Valley Campground is open from mid-April to mid-October. It’s popular in summer thanks to its high altitude and access to swimming on Green Valley Lake, which make it a great way to escape the Southern California heat (summer highs are in the mid 70s). Summer is the wildflower season, too. For spring and fall visits, temperatures can dip into the 30s—bring cold-weather camping gear.

Great for two families with kids if you get the two adjacent sites in the back (sites 21,22 I think)

This campground is only second in my long list of favorites in the San Bernardino's. As you drive up the camp ground immediately forks. All the best sites sit to the right. The right (eastern) side of the camp ground has far fewer sites to choose from and has great shade for the large pines that grow there. Site 35-36 are both beautiful double sites with lots of shade, room, and privacy, while site 37 is a single with the same. All sites to the left (western) side of the campground are relatively close and exposed, but closer to the off road highways so the choice is yours. Either way this is a great place to camp with running water and flushing toilets.

Your guide to camping in Green Valley Campground

    Overview

    Biking

Forest Service roads near this campground cater to gravel and mountain bikers. Or, head a bit further up the mountains to the Snow Valley and Snow Summit ski resorts, which offer lift-assisted downhill MTB riding in the summer.

    Boating

When the weather just gets too hot, there’s no better place to take refuge than in the San Bernardino National Forest. There are several lakes, such as Lake Gregory, that offer boating opportunities. With a kayak launch, fishing equipment, and boating rentals ranging from paddle boards to sailboats, you can’t go wrong. Make sure to call the park for more information!

    Fishing

From May to August, Green Valley Lake is regularly stocked with trout. Just know a day fee applies for fishing at this private lake.

    Hiking

Hikers can head straight from Green Valley Campground up to Little Green Valley Road until it becomes the Little Green Valley Trail. Family-friendly hikes also dot the nearby Children’s National Forest.

    Horseback riding

Horseback riding is allowed on all National Forest trails-- that means you can venture through all of the wilderness areas, including the ones that lead into nearby Angeles National Forest. There are a handful of equestrian campgrounds where you can spend a night on your horseback journey. There is a list of horse trails here.

    Off-roading (OHV)

Get those wheels dirty and head on over to San Bernardino to get away from city traffic. Popular runs include John Bull, Holocomb Creek, and Deep Creek in the Big Bear region. There’s an incredibly long list right here. Make sure to pick up a map and take care out there, as many of these roads are shared!

    Climbing

Both the Green Valley Lake Pinnacles and Crafts Peak climbing areas are close to this campground.

    Snow sports

Your opportunities for national forest fun are endless in the winter. You can find skiing, snowboarding, sledding, tubing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing in this wintry paradise. There are four resorts nestled inside the forest: Snow Summit, The Park at Bear Mountain, Rim Nordic Ski Area, and Snow Valley Mountain Resort. There are also snow play areas like Snowdrift Winter Playground, 2 snowmobile routes, and 3 XC-skiing and snowshoeing areas.

    Swimming

Green Valley Lake features a swimming beach, though a fee applies. Free swimming is available at Big Bear Lake.

    Wildlife watching

You can spot wildlife just about everywhere, with the usual raccoons and squirrels, woodland creatures left and right, along with the less common mountain lions and bears. If you’re lucky you’ll catch sight of one of the rare bighorn sheep living in the canyons! There are over 440 species, with more than 30 of them as endangered species. Birders can find bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, Stellar’s jays, and birds with crazy names like towhees, chickadees, and juncoes. You can find a small list of wildlife on Gorp.
