When the Ladder is reserved, you may not swim there. Please be respectful. We have 1.5 miles of both sides of the river so plenty of places to swim. It varies a lot in depth and width over the ranch. Serene and rustic perfectly describes Boulderdash. It is quaint and quiet with all the amenities you could want and a short walk down to the Medina River helped cool thing down in the Texas heat. Valerie, the park host, was always around if anything was needed from the general store and we even had a chance to meet owners Carol Anne and Lyn. Fine people all around.

Wonderful campground! The most generous hosts, so accommodating and beyond. Birdseed and deer corn are provided in jars, wifi is available if necessary (but it’s so lovely out there you absolutely will not want it). The owners had fresh sourdough and farm eggs at a price affordable for everyone, the river is beautiful and the sounds of nature are really unbeatable. Great birds. Valerie is the best camp host! We really felt at home while getting the full tent camping experience. Thank y’all so much!

This is my second stay here. The first time was only one evening and just not long enough. This time I brought my pup and stayed 2 nights!!! It was beautiful! Despite a major drop in temperature due to a texas cold front, like 90 to 30 degrees i mean.... we managed to stay comfortable in all conditions! Ellie was so helpful with all my questions. Pup loved it. The 10 minute walk to the river was worth every step! Deer everywhere. Clean and cute. Will book agian..

The unpaved roads and neighborhood on the way to camp were a bit misleading. Boulderdash is super cute and extremely well maintained!! We stayed in the pull-thru RV slot. It was pretty level and had shade provided by trees on one side. Plenty of room for slide outs and our big truck. Very quiet aside from all the songbirds. Owners and camp Host were extremely friendly. Good WiFi. River level was low but still flowing to enjoy sitting in it.

Place was very relaxing and enjoyable, we stayed at #1 riverfront which was nice! I will say it's a family spot so you will see other families and kids but it's not overly crowded because of the limited campsites. If you are looking to go with a group I'd recommend getting #1 and #2 or #3 on the riverfront thoes are the best with the most shade if it's warm! We will definitely be back !

The views are stunning, and although it’s near the front gate, it’s quite separate from other campers, so there is plenty of privacy, yet it’s also close enough to the bathroom and kitchen. We loved that we could buy fresh eggs from the fridge, as well. The host was also friendly and attentive. Highly recommend and will likely be back!

Campsite 4 was by far the best one. You can still see the river but have some respite from the sun. Just a short walk to the bathrooms and water. The creek was crystal clear and so refreshing to play in. We can’t wait to come back. It was the perfect spot for my husband and our two young boys and another couple with two boys. We would love to come back again.

About

It’s easy to see why Garner State Park, located near Concan in the Texas Hill Country, is so popular, especially over the summer. Sixteen miles of hiking trails and biking trails are ready for exploration, even up to Mount Old Baldy with its sweeping views. Swimming, tubing, paddling, boating, and fishing are all a good time, and on summer evenings, jukebox tunes play at the historic pavilion built by the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC), a tradition since the 1940s. Plan ahead to stay at one of the 350 camping sites, RV sites, cabins, and screened shelters.

Notable campgrounds

Best for amenities: The Oakmont Camping Area provides easy access to the pavilion, mini golf, volleyball and basketball courts, boathouse, and the Frio River.
Best to escape the crowds: The Shady Meadows Camping Area offers spacious sites with 20-amp, 30-amp, and 50-amp full hookups away from other campers.
Best for groups: The Cypress Springs Group Camping Area offers space for 40 on the east side of the Frio River.

Tips for snagging a campsite

Campsites are very popular and book up fast. Make a reservation as soon as you know your dates. Campsites, cabins, and screened shelters can be reserved up to five months in advance and group camps 12 months in advance.
If you don’t have a reservation, arrive at the park first thing in the morning to see about grabbing any unreserved sites available for walk-ups.
If your plans are flexible, try to visit during the week, during non-holiday periods, or in winter for fewer crowds.

When to go

The park’s busy season is from Memorial Day through Labor Day, as well as on holidays and during spring break. In the busy season, the mini golf course and tube shuttle are in operation, and food is available for purchase. A float or swim in the Frio River is most refreshing in the heat of summer. Arrive early for summer dances, as gates close once the parking lot is full, sometimes as early as 8:30pm. Some camping areas (Persimmon Hills and Live Oak) are closed in January and February.

Know before you go

The park store rents inner tubes, kayaks, and paddle boats, along with tables, barbecue pits, fans, and heaters.
Locker rentals are available at the boathouse.
The trails up Mount Old Baldy are fairly steep, with loose rocks and gravel; hiking shoes with support and good tread are recommended.
Campfires are only permitted in designated rings.

Shady Meadows Campground

Shady Oaks is the best camp site if you don't want to be surrounded by lots of people. Most of the sites are not extremely close to one another. You are only a 15 min walk from the river and from Old Baldy Trail. You have water and electric hook ups as well if needed. And if you get there early on a weekend, try to grab sites 120 or 122. Both of those are almost separate from everyone else so you get more privacy than normal.

Awesome hiking trails. I recommend taking the Bridges trail, to the Fushee trail, to the Old Baldy Summit trail. It is not an easy hike, but you get to see all the views of the park.

Pecan Grove Campground

I recommend not picking the sites near the showers/restrooms. Sure it seems like a great convenience but it quickly becomes a annoyance listening to the toilets flushing throughout the night. (lesson learned) Other than that, it is a great campground with easy access to the river to the East and some great hiking trails to the West. The Frio is also my favorite river to float in Texas! Always seems like it is the perfect temperature in the summer and more laid back and relaxing than say the Guadalupe or the Comal.
