Welcome to Serenity in the Foothills. Located an hour west of Denver, this 3600 acre ranch features 12 spaced out campsites that offer quite a bit of privacy. There are tons of trails/ roads to hike and bike around on, as well as many amazing views. Resort Valley Ranch was combined from around 15 homesteads by the Corbin family. You will see lots of relics and evidence related to those homesteads across our property! Please do not disturb any artifacts or relics on our property. Come enjoy this hidden private jewel in the pines of Jefferson County, Colorado!
We want to ensure your vehicle and trailer won't get damaged while commuting to your campsite. Please read about our campsites and make sure the one you pick works for your car/trailer.

Historic Ranch
Resort Valley Ranch was homesteaded mainly by the Corbin family starting.in 1884
They had moved their cattle here from nearby Pleasent Park during a particularly hard winter, as a "last resort", leading to the creeks being named Last Resort and West Resort.
Hard times in the 1930's and drought conditions, convinced the Corbin's to sell out and move to lusher climes.
Tom’s father, Dr. O.J. Butterfield was another doctor that invested his spare money in cattle ranching.
Purchased mainly before. 1945, Tom's older brother Rupert tried to make a living raising trout on the Resort Creek property in the late '40's.
Otherwise, the place was occupied by various old-timers who caretook the place until 1955, when Barbara and Tom moved here to oversee the cattle business.
The second slope of the driveway frequently had to be dug out by hand for access.
The years of drought had left the place overgrazed and barren.
Times were hard, and the horses needed to work the cattle ate plenty.
The opportunity arose to lease them out in nearby Foxton--Foxton Stables was born.
An old livery and other outbuildings provided the facilities needed.
Mutual benefit was derived from the business as customers to the general store also would take advantage of the riding horses just across the bridge.
Workers and helpers came from off-duty air force boys, as well as volunteer children from the local summer cabins.
Guided rides were offered, as well as moonlight rides when appropriate and by appointment.
There were also "Chuck Wagon" cookouts which included a horse-drawn hay ride to and from.
Tom and Barbara also put on a Trail Horse Trials which was an annual competition over obstacles, judged, set up to simulate obstacles a horse might encounter while out riding.
This became more widely attended the second year, coming to the notice of horse breeders like Mary Woolverton, who competed in it for the first time in 1963.
(That's when Nan first fell in love with Prince of Pride, a golden palomino Morgan stallion who always looked like the perfect horse showing how to do it perfectly.)
1963 is the last year this event, and the stable business, was held in Foxton.
From then on, the stable was run from the barn at the ranch, and the Trail Horse Trials was not put on again until 1966, when it was sponsored by the 4-H Trail Dusters and put on in conjunction with the first annual Top of the World Competitive Trail ride which was head-quartered on the west end of the property.
As the stable became busier, more horses were purchased or leased to meet the need.
Many of these horse were grade individuals from known breeds.
The better mares did double duty by raising foals each year, that would be sold or auctioned off.
Some of the mares were bred to our Shetland pony stallion, Tarzan, he was called a chocolate-dapple.
Several years we had Appaloosa offspring from a friend's stallion.
For a short time, a Moroccan Paint stallion was used, but he tended to throw the lethal white gene, as well as breaking Tom Butterfield's knee with his bad behavior.
He soon found his way back to auction!
A couple of the leased mares were Morgans.
They proved to be easy to work with as well as hardy individuals that kept well, and the foals proved easier to halter break than the other horses.
They made a good enough impression that a young gelding was purchased, and one nice mare was bred to the Morgan stallion Julio--descended from Juzan.
The resulting colt, Julian, was kept as stallion until age eight, before being gelded and living out his years as a family favorite.
Julian did a lovely running walk.
Unfortunately, none of his offspring were kept, including the two from the half Shetland mares kept for the family.
It may seem that the cattle operation got dropped by the wayside.
In actuality, that's not far from the truth.
The fact that the registered Herefords purchased by Tom and Barbara, turned out to carry dwarf genes, which soon became apparent each calving season.
This rather limited the value and productivity of the herd.
Financial concerns brought on by Dr. Butterfield's death in 1967, subsequently led to the dispersal of the cattle herd.
It was fortunate that the Stable had become established enough to become one of the mainstays of the family fortunes.
Diversification was always a necessity.
Horses were leased to the Forest Service when they needed them.
The entire string would be utilized for company picnics, with the horses being brought to the site.
Churches were sent flyers promoting group rides and hayrides.
Boy Scout troops were welcomed to camp, ride and work on both Horsemanship and Conservation Merit Badges--which benefited in valuable erosion control work.
Many times, ranch hands were obtained from these sources, both for fencing and Christmas tree cutting.
There were many winters that the place carried over a hundred head of horses, as several camps in the area would winter their horses here.
Dad would haul them back and forth, pull their shoes, etc.
Our pinto line originated with Barbara's mare Calico, a pinto mare of unknown breeding, though Tennessee Walker was suspected due to her gaits.
Having been diagnosed with Navicular disease, she was bred to the Shetland, Tarzan, a chocolate-dapple--producing the mare Feather (Nan's pony).
This line has been bred only to Morgans since '66, when Feather was bred to General James, producing the mare Calico Doll, granddam to our stallion RV Eagle Feather.
Doll was only 14.2, but she had heart, stamina and intelligence.
Having learned much at the knee of the Shetland, Feather, Nan began training Doll in 1970.
This mare was just four years old when she took the High Point Champion in the '71 Trail Horse Trials, over some tough competition, including Mary Woolverton's Prince of Pride.
She could side-pass, two track, drag a log, pull a cart without blinders, open gates, work livestock and run all day.
She also would gait occasionally, a trait that skipped a generation.
Calico Doll was bred to Prince of Pride five different times, prior to his death in 1973(?).
She would get in foal but never carried to term.
Nan did some riding for Mary in exchange for these breedings, working Victory Vagabond.
Finally the arrangement was settled by getting Calico Doll in foal to her stallion, Great Hills Richmond.
Calico Doll's brown colt from this cross was sold on to the Tumbling River Ranch for cattle work.
In the 1970's, a local breeder came to our attention with her stallion, Topside Midnight, when she competed him in the Top of the World Competitive Trail Ride.
The crossing of Calico Doll with Midnight produced the black 3/4 Morgan stallion, Jaspar, in 1974.
He was used for breeding four or five years, overlapping the transition to pureblooded Morgans in 1977. I always thought it unfortunate that he wasn't pure-blooded as he had wonderful manners, was very solid and typey and a generous sire.
We sold his offspring until 1985 and still have a great-granddaughter.
He was gelded in '81, and sold in '82.
A few of the solid colored part-bloods come down from this line of the family.
One of his daughters has competed as a grade horse in Competitive Trail riding for the past ten years.
Three major land sales were required for operating expenses during the late '60's and early '70's.
The Indian Park Ranch was decreased to 280 acres, Resort Valley Ranch decreased from 5,000 acres to its present 4,000.
The Camp Fire Girls purchased the property adjacent to the driveway, leading to their utilizing horses from our string for their horse program.
As the Camp increased its horse program, the public stables was gradually phased out.
This freed up the Butterfield's lifestyle enough for them to focus on starting raising the pure-blooded Morgans, beginning with their purchase of SH Crescent in 1976.

The surrounding valley has lots to offer from the quant little towns and coffee shops to the home style meals at the restaurants. and all the hot springs are amazing.
Your site is overlooking the Sangre de Christo mountain range. The land is Alpine desert with sagebrush and ground cactus and incredible star gazing. There are 2 great hiking trails within a couple miles. There are 3 hot springs within 30 minutes. The Great sand dunes national park is within 1hr. The San Luis valley offers, hiking, mountain biking, ATV trail, Horse back riding, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, rafting, refuges for wildlife watching.
New for 2024, The flushable toilet and shower are now operational. The shower house is located in the center of the loop with sites 1,2,3 on the south side of the building. It has an on demand water heater, there is also a a flushable toilet located in the same space. An important note about the toilet, Do Not flush anything other than toilet paper please. DO NOT flush feminine hygiene products, napkins or hand wipes or anything other than toilet paper. These type of things plug and burn up the pump while pumping out the tank. This will cause the toilet to be unusable.
ATTENTION: THE SHOWER HOUSE AND TOILET WILL BE SHUTTING DOWN AND GETTING WINTERIZED OCTOBER 1ST UNTIL MAY 1ST.

Hi! We are a bright, young family, & small community, developing our 42 acres in Crestone, Colorado. Our property features a host of cottonwood trees, a creek, two outdoor bath houses, a fire pit, a 1.5 acre mini farm in progress. There are two new bell tents, available with up to 3 single beds, or one king. There are ample tent camping locations, and shore power for vans/rvs. The property is also home to abundant wildlife including a Great Horned Owl, Coyote packs, Elk, Deer, Woodpeckers, Hummingbirds, Bobcats, Bats and Frogs.
Crestone is a beautiful, remote, high desert wilderness surrounded by classic Colorado (almost) 14-ners with high alpine lakes, rivers, hot springs, rock climbing, mountain biking, and our property borders on the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Crestone is also known for its 30 diverse spiritual centers, incredible star gazing as a official dark sky community, alien sightings, and it's beautiful and unique housing community that focuses on building with reclaimed and natural building methods. Our home, like many of the homes here, is creatively made from recycled materials, using two train cars for the body of the house. The property also hosts a 1200 square foot Dojo, built by the previous owner, a Qi Gong master lineage carrier. We continue use the space for yoga, capoiera, dance and other events. We are completely off grid, using solar power, wood heat and some propane when needed. We aren't on sewer or septic, so this is an opportunity for the understanding of composting toilet and humanure systems. That may seem low-tech overall but, we are blessed with the infinite power of Starlink internet! Great opportunity for part time mobile office types.
Our goals on the property are to enhance our lives, and those in our community, with everything we do here. The House where we live is the corner stone of the Bruce Property and is on the Colorado Register of Historic Houses.The residence was constructed between 1905 and 1912, using red bricks made on the site. John and Sophia Bruce, early pioneers in the North Fork Valley, were first involved in cattle raising. The family later became successful fruit growers. Located along the West Elk Loop, a Colorado Scenic and Historic Byway, the large two-story residence features a steeply pitched hipped roof with prominent attic dormers.As a guest of Riverwalk you will have full access to the river during your stay. In addition, there is the Riverwalk Trail System that skirts the North Fork of the Gunnison River from the top of the property, by the Riverwalk Yurt, (available on this site) meandering downstream past the Riverwalk TIPI (available on the site) passing the Grove Yurt (available on this site) and terminating at the bottom of the property with the sandy Riverwalk Beach. We began this venture in 2012 by purchasing 35 acres overlooking a 7000 acre homestead. We are located on the beautiful eastern plains of Colorado southeast of Denver. Rolling hills dotted with Ponderosa pines that encourage wildlife to settle in. Pikes Peak, Longs Peak and Mount Evans all visible on clear days. We have 35 acres and raise alpaca’s, chickens, cats and dogs as well as a large garden. We are totally off grid and enjoy life in the home my husband built using trees he cut down and milled on his sawmill. We lived on the property in a 400sq ft cottage while building the house and this cottage is now available to rent. Water is available outside and the outhouse is just a few steps away. It comes equipped with a woodturning stove you can use to cook on.
We added the Bijou Tree House to our options a couple years ago! It is a one room cabin (sleeps 2) with an incredible picture window that frames Pikes Peak beautifully. It is nestle among some old Ponderosa Pines; sports a cute but tiny wood burning stove; bar table in front of the window; deck with seating and a propane camp chef 2 burner stove. A hammock is available for use and private outhouse just a few feet away. Across the gulley is the new Sawmill Cabin built under the canopy of Jim's sawmill. It is small, and can sleep 3 with a unique bunk over a queen sized platform bed. A small deck, fire pit all under a covered open space. More kids? Bring a tent! there’s room!
Numerous tent sites are available all within easy walking to your car. An outhouse is close by.
We love sharing our story and our home and the beautiful place God has gifted us with people from all over the world and hope to host you as well. Come Camp; and relax. Mountain Road Disclosure:
The Sheep Mountain property it’s located in a mountainous area. There are 7 miles of dirt and mountainous roads from the highway to the property. Although the dirt roads are maintained there may be grooves and ruts in some areas due to weather. Please be advise that trucks and four-wheel vehicles will have a much easier time navigating these roads.
Other vehicles may need to slow down and take it easy through some potentially rough areas.
PROPERTY UPDATE:
DUE TO THE RECENT WIND STORM, SOME TREES WERE UPROOTED AND BLOWN OVER ON THE PROPERTY. TREES WERE REMOVE FROM THE ROAD AND CAMP SITES. SOME ARE STILL DOWN IN THE AREA. WE ARE WORKING WITH LOCAL CONTRACTORS TO HAVE THEM CUT DOWN FOR FIREWOOD AND MOVED OUT OF THE WAY.
THE DOWNED TREES DO NOT INTERFERE WITH THE ABILITY FOR YOU TO BRING YOUR RV OR TENT TO SETUP CAMP.

We offer both tent and RV listings to suit however you like to travel. We have a hot shower, bathroom, picnic tables, potable water, and trash and recycle bins. Our RV listing has both 20 and 30 amp electrical hookup but no water or sewer hookups.

Don't forget we're at over 9,000 feet elevation and temperatures and weather conditions can vary greatly. Be prepared for all seasons!!!
Camp fire usage depends on current weather conditions at the time of visits in addition to any state/county restrictions that may be in place (host approval required)!!! IF there are no restrictions and fires are allowed, we have firewood bundles and/or starter packs for purchase at $10/bundle/pack. We also have two propane fire pits available for rent (see "extras"), or you are welcome to bring your own. If you have purchased wood and there are restrictions/bans, we will gladly apply your wood purchase the rental of a propane pit. Propane fire pit usage may also be restricted by current conditions or state/county restrictions!
Fresh eggs are available for purchase (when the girls are cooperating) by the dozen, or half dozen (see "extras"). You are welcome to go "visit" the chickens. Their coop is next to the large blue shop/barn.
*UPON ARRIVAL at the property, please WAIT INSIDE our main gate (unless otherwise directed via prior communication with host). The host(s) will meet you there shortly after passing through the gate and direct you to your site.

Camp Penguin at Wandering Penguin Ranch (facebook.com/CampPenguin) in southern Colorado is about a 3 hour drive from the Denver metro area, two hours from Colorado Springs and just under an hour north west of Canon City. We provide a variety of site options to choose from including tent sites, car/van/truck sites, and rustic trailer site options - all with NO amenities (NO electric/septic/water, etc). Additional vehicle parking on the property can be accommodated for groups with more than one vehicle. Please provide type of camper/tent and number of vehicles at booking so hosts can help direct you to the best site option available.
Guests can relax around our small pond or roam freely around our 35-acre property. There is both hiking and fishing at Badger Creek only a short drive away. Waugh Mountain State Trust Land is another hiking option and is also just a short drive up the road (*NOTE: the State of Colorado now requires a valid hunting/fishing license to access state trust lands)! Additionally, we are about 45-90 minutes away from a variety of alternative adventures! Some of these include Salida, Cripple Creek, Eleven Mile Reservoir, Paradise Cove Swimming Hole, Florissant Fossil Beds, Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center, Manitou Incline, Manitou Cliff Dwellings, Cave of the Winds, Seven Falls, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience, several rafting/zipline and Jeep tour companies, Westcliffe, Bishop Castle and Canon City including Skyline Drive, Tunnel Drive, Royal Gorge Train, Museum of Colorado Prisons and The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey. Any of these can be done as a day trip or visited while on your way here, or home. (*NOTE: some of these attractions are free, some require a fee and some are seasonal. To avoid disappointment, PLEASE do your own research prior to arrival)!
Guests need to be self-sustaining to camp here as there are no facilities nearby (gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, etc.)! But, if you are looking for a peaceful, quiet getaway to commune with nature, a chance to see wildlife and simply relax.... We're your place - book your visit now!!!

Located on a private, forested area of our modern, Off-Grid working homestead. This site offers you mountaintop views, plenty of aspens as well as pine trees and abundant wildlife passing through.
Leave the noise of the city behind and wake up to birds singing, hummingbirds buzzing by and potentially a moose or deer sighting. Oh and quite possibly our rooster crowing ;) Hike into the National Forest off the property. Guided hikes can also be arranged for an additional fee. Or just sit and enjoy the peace and quiet!
Plenty of other hiking trails nearby, creeks and Slaughterhouse Gulch for those that love a good 4WD adventure.
A propane fire-pit will be provided for you so you can still enjoy a nice campfire. A propane heater is also available for chilly nights or winter camping. The Greenhouse also includes a camp stove, a percolator for making coffee or tea, minimal cookware and silverware. Potable water will be provided along with coffee and tea. Fresh eggs from our chickens can also be made available upon request for a small fee.
Cots and a hammock are available for use in the Greenhouse, but you will have to bring your own sleeping mats, sleeping bags and pillows. Sleeping mats and sleeping bags on the floor are also an option if you choose. Picnic tables are close to the Greenhouse for enjoying time outdoors.
The Glamping in the Aspens Tent has a wood burning stove in it that will be available starting later season 2024. Firewood for the wood stove will be provided for you. Just outside the tent is a picnic table with BBQ grill and propane fire pit. There is a porch area with outdoor kitchen and a queen sized bed inside the tent. A comfy dog bed is also included.
A composting toilet is available for use. No showers currently available (Bath House coming soon).
Well behaved dogs are allowed, however, they must be on a leash or under voice command.
There are 2 dogs that live on the property as well as chickens, turkeys, and a cat. All will be contained so as not to disturb (except for the occasional rooster crow).

We also have begun hosting our first artist/maker residents who are using the shop space and land to bring their own creations to life. Over time, we have dreams of permaculture farming, eco building workshops, community collaboration, and the ability to host gatherings – however, we are committed to taking it all one step at a time and allowing only what is meant to be to unfold. For now it is simply our home, a maker space for art and experimental eco building, a gathering spot for friends and a quiet Hipcamp spot.

Notes
-No fires what so ever! Fire danger is extremely high in this area.
- Although we are only forty miles from the Sand Dunes park, it is a four hour drive to get there, so maybe not the best area to stay if the dunes are on your list.
- Days in the summer can get pretty hot and shade is hard to come by, so plan a day trip to Florence river park, (about 30 minutes drive)and hop in the Arkansas river and cool off.
- this is a wilderness area and all Colorado wildlife is present.

There are tons of trails/ roads to hike and bike around on, as well as many amazing views. Resort Valley Ranch was combined from around 15 homesteads by the Corbin family. You will see lots of relics and evidence related to those homesteads across our property! Please do not disturb any artifacts or relics on our property. We want to ensure your vehicle and trailer won't get damaged while commuting to your campsite. Please read about our campsites and make sure the one you pick works for your car/trailer.

Historic Ranch
Resort Valley Ranch was homesteaded mainly by the Corbin family starting.in 1884
They had moved their cattle here from nearby Pleasent Park during a particularly hard winter, as a "last resort", leading to the creeks being named Last Resort and West Resort.
Hard times in the 1930's and drought conditions, convinced the Corbin's to sell out and move to lusher climes.
Tom’s father, Dr. O.J. Butterfield was another doctor that invested his spare money in cattle ranching.
Purchased mainly before. 1945, Tom's older brother Rupert tried to make a living raising trout on the Resort Creek property in the late '40's.
Otherwise, the place was occupied by various old-timers who caretook the place until 1955, when Barbara and Tom moved here to oversee the cattle business.
The second slope of the driveway frequently had to be dug out by hand for access.
The years of drought had left the place overgrazed and barren.
Times were hard, and the horses needed to work the cattle ate plenty.
The opportunity arose to lease them out in nearby Foxton--Foxton Stables was born.
An old livery and other outbuildings provided the facilities needed.
Mutual benefit was derived from the business as customers to the general store also would take advantage of the riding horses just across the bridge.
Workers and helpers came from off-duty air force boys, as well as volunteer children from the local summer cabins.
Guided rides were offered, as well as moonlight rides when appropriate and by appointment.
There were also "Chuck Wagon" cookouts which included a horse-drawn hay ride to and from.
Tom and Barbara also put on a Trail Horse Trials which was an annual competition over obstacles, judged, set up to simulate obstacles a horse might encounter while out riding.
This became more widely attended the second year, coming to the notice of horse breeders like Mary Woolverton, who competed in it for the first time in 1963.
(That's when Nan first fell in love with Prince of Pride, a golden palomino Morgan stallion who always looked like the perfect horse showing how to do it perfectly.)
1963 is the last year this event, and the stable business, was held in Foxton.
From then on, the stable was run from the barn at the ranch, and the Trail Horse Trials was not put on again until 1966, when it was sponsored by the 4-H Trail Dusters and put on in conjunction with the first annual Top of the World Competitive Trail ride which was head-quartered on the west end of the property.
As the stable became busier, more horses were purchased or leased to meet the need.
Many of these horse were grade individuals from known breeds.
The better mares did double duty by raising foals each year, that would be sold or auctioned off.
Some of the mares were bred to our Shetland pony stallion, Tarzan, he was called a chocolate-dapple.
Several years we had Appaloosa offspring from a friend's stallion.
For a short time, a Moroccan Paint stallion was used, but he tended to throw the lethal white gene, as well as breaking Tom Butterfield's knee with his bad behavior.
He soon found his way back to auction!
A couple of the leased mares were Morgans.
They proved to be easy to work with as well as hardy individuals that kept well, and the foals proved easier to halter break than the other horses.
They made a good enough impression that a young gelding was purchased, and one nice mare was bred to the Morgan stallion Julio--descended from Juzan.
The resulting colt, Julian, was kept as stallion until age eight, before being gelded and living out his years as a family favorite.
Julian did a lovely running walk.
Unfortunately, none of his offspring were kept, including the two from the half Shetland mares kept for the family.
It may seem that the cattle operation got dropped by the wayside.
In actuality, that's not far from the truth.
The fact that the registered Herefords purchased by Tom and Barbara, turned out to carry dwarf genes, which soon became apparent each calving season.
This rather limited the value and productivity of the herd.
Financial concerns brought on by Dr. Butterfield's death in 1967, subsequently led to the dispersal of the cattle herd.
It was fortunate that the Stable had become established enough to become one of the mainstays of the family fortunes.
Diversification was always a necessity.
Horses were leased to the Forest Service when they needed them.
The entire string would be utilized for company picnics, with the horses being brought to the site.
Churches were sent flyers promoting group rides and hayrides.
Boy Scout troops were welcomed to camp, ride and work on both Horsemanship and Conservation Merit Badges--which benefited in valuable erosion control work.
Many times, ranch hands were obtained from these sources, both for fencing and Christmas tree cutting.
There were many winters that the place carried over a hundred head of horses, as several camps in the area would winter their horses here.
Dad would haul them back and forth, pull their shoes, etc.
Our pinto line originated with Barbara's mare Calico, a pinto mare of unknown breeding, though Tennessee Walker was suspected due to her gaits.
Having been diagnosed with Navicular disease, she was bred to the Shetland, Tarzan, a chocolate-dapple--producing the mare Feather (Nan's pony).
This line has been bred only to Morgans since '66, when Feather was bred to General James, producing the mare Calico Doll, granddam to our stallion RV Eagle Feather.
Doll was only 14.2, but she had heart, stamina and intelligence.
Having learned much at the knee of the Shetland, Feather, Nan began training Doll in 1970.
This mare was just four years old when she took the High Point Champion in the '71 Trail Horse Trials, over some tough competition, including Mary Woolverton's Prince of Pride.
She could side-pass, two track, drag a log, pull a cart without blinders, open gates, work livestock and run all day.
She also would gait occasionally, a trait that skipped a generation.
Calico Doll was bred to Prince of Pride five different times, prior to his death in 1973(?).
She would get in foal but never carried to term.
Nan did some riding for Mary in exchange for these breedings, working Victory Vagabond.
Finally the arrangement was settled by getting Calico Doll in foal to her stallion, Great Hills Richmond.
Calico Doll's brown colt from this cross was sold on to the Tumbling River Ranch for cattle work.
In the 1970's, a local breeder came to our attention with her stallion, Topside Midnight, when she competed him in the Top of the World Competitive Trail Ride.
The crossing of Calico Doll with Midnight produced the black 3/4 Morgan stallion, Jaspar, in 1974.
He was used for breeding four or five years, overlapping the transition to pureblooded Morgans in 1977. I always thought it unfortunate that he wasn't pure-blooded as he had wonderful manners, was very solid and typey and a generous sire.
We sold his offspring until 1985 and still have a great-granddaughter.
He was gelded in '81, and sold in '82.
A few of the solid colored part-bloods come down from this line of the family.
One of his daughters has competed as a grade horse in Competitive Trail riding for the past ten years.
Three major land sales were required for operating expenses during the late '60's and early '70's.
The Indian Park Ranch was decreased to 280 acres, Resort Valley Ranch decreased from 5,000 acres to its present 4,000.
The Camp Fire Girls purchased the property adjacent to the driveway, leading to their utilizing horses from our string for their horse program.
As the Camp increased its horse program, the public stables was gradually phased out.
This freed up the Butterfield's lifestyle enough for them to focus on starting raising the pure-blooded Morgans, beginning with their purchase of SH Crescent in 1976.

Your site is overlooking the Sangre de Christo mountain range. The land is Alpine desert with sagebrush and ground cactus and incredible star gazing. There are 2 great hiking trails within a couple miles. There are 3 hot springs within 30 minutes. The Great sand dunes national park is within 1hr. The San Luis valley offers, hiking, mountain biking, ATV trail, Horse back riding, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, rafting, refuges for wildlife watching.
New for 2024, The flushable toilet and shower are now operational. The shower house is located in the center of the loop with sites 1,2,3 on the south side of the building. It has an on demand water heater, there is also a a flushable toilet located in the same space. An important note about the toilet, Do Not flush anything other than toilet paper please. DO NOT flush feminine hygiene products, napkins or hand wipes or anything other than toilet paper. These type of things plug and burn up the pump while pumping out the tank. This will cause the toilet to be unusable.
ATTENTION: THE SHOWER HOUSE AND TOILET WILL BE SHUTTING DOWN AND GETTING WINTERIZED OCTOBER 1ST UNTIL MAY 1ST.

Crestone is a beautiful, remote, high desert wilderness surrounded by classic Colorado (almost) 14-ners with high alpine lakes, rivers, hot springs, rock climbing, mountain biking, and our property borders on the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Crestone is also known for its 30 diverse spiritual centers, incredible star gazing as a official dark sky community, alien sightings, and it's beautiful and unique housing community that focuses on building with reclaimed and natural building methods. Our home, like many of the homes here, is creatively made from recycled materials, using two train cars for the body of the house. The property also hosts a 1200 square foot Dojo, built by the previous owner, a Qi Gong master lineage carrier. We continue use the space for yoga, capoiera, dance and other events. We are completely off grid, using solar power, wood heat and some propane when needed. We aren't on sewer or septic, so this is an opportunity for the understanding of composting toilet and humanure systems. We began this venture in 2012 by purchasing 35 acres overlooking a 7000 acre homestead. We are located on the beautiful eastern plains of Colorado southeast of Denver. We have 35 acres and raise alpaca’s, chickens, cats and dogs as well as a large garden. We are totally off grid and enjoy life in the home my husband built using trees he cut down and milled on his sawmill. We lived on the property in a 400sq ft cottage while building the house and this cottage is now available to rent. Water is available outside and the outhouse is just a few steps away. It comes equipped with a woodturning stove you can use to cook on.
We added the Bijou Tree House to our options a couple years ago! It is a one room cabin (sleeps 2) with an incredible picture window that frames Pikes Peak beautifully. It is nestle among some old Ponderosa Pines; sports a cute but tiny wood burning stove; bar table in front of the window; deck with seating and a propane camp chef 2 burner stove. A hammock is available for use and private outhouse just a few feet away. Across the gulley is the new Sawmill Cabin built under the canopy of Jim's sawmill. It is small, and can sleep 3 with a unique bunk over a queen sized platform bed. A small deck, fire pit all under a covered open space. More kids? Bring a tent! there’s room!

Camp Penguin at Wandering Penguin Ranch (facebook.com/CampPenguin) in southern Colorado is about a 3 hour drive from the Denver metro area, two hours from Colorado Springs and just under an hour north west of Canon City. We provide a variety of site options to choose from including tent sites, car/van/truck sites, and rustic trailer site options - all with NO amenities (NO electric/septic/water, etc). Additional vehicle parking on the property can be accommodated for groups with more than one vehicle. Guests can relax around our small pond or roam freely around our 35-acre property. There is both hiking and fishing at Badger Creek only a short drive away. Oh and quite possibly our rooster crowing ;) Hike into the National Forest off the property. Guided hikes can also be arranged for an additional fee. Or just sit and enjoy the peace and quiet!
Plenty of other hiking trails nearby, creeks and Slaughterhouse Gulch for those that love a good 4WD adventure.
A propane fire-pit will be provided for you so you can still enjoy a nice campfire. A propane heater is also available for chilly nights or winter camping. The Greenhouse also includes a camp stove, a percolator for making coffee or tea, minimal cookware and silverware. Potable water will be provided along with coffee and tea. Fresh eggs from our chickens can also be made available upon request for a small fee.
Cots and a hammock are available for use in the Greenhouse, but you will have to bring your own sleeping mats, sleeping bags and pillows. Sleeping mats and sleeping bags on the floor are also an option if you choose. Picnic tables are close to the Greenhouse for enjoying time outdoors.
The Glamping in the Aspens Tent has a wood burning stove in it that will be available starting later season 2024. Firewood for the wood stove will be provided for you. Just outside the tent is a picnic table with BBQ grill and propane fire pit. There is a porch area with outdoor kitchen and a queen sized bed inside the tent. A comfy dog bed is also included.
A composting toilet is available for use. No showers currently available (Bath House coming soon).
Well behaved dogs are allowed, however, they must be on a leash or under voice command.
There are 2 dogs that live on the property as well as chickens, turkeys, and a cat. All will be contained so as not to disturb (except for the occasional rooster crow).

Camped over the weekend at Site B with my wife, toddler and a puppy. It was such an amazing trip and very peaceful. The site couldn’t be better for a family and having the space with no one near is a huge plus. Feels like you are very far from the hustle and bustle. Also not far from the South Platte for some river time and fishing.
Thom was very kind and responsive, a great camp host.
We look forward to our next stay at the ranch which will no doubt be soon!

Great location, site was well maintained. Roann and Jim were very hospitable and we enjoyed our time very much. Incredible Front Range views, pine trees on the property surrounded by rolling hills.

Weekend Trip to The Bluebear at Y Double-K Ranch
This is My Second time back to Visit this Magical Mountain & I can’t say enough about the Hosts and how incredibly special this place is and has become for Me. Thank You for creating Serenity in the Great Outdoors. I’m already planning my return from NOLA to the mountains.

This is such a hidden gem. Me and my friends had the best time and the views were some of the best we’ve ever seen. You’re far enough from the other cabins on property to feel secluded but close enough to Deborah for if you need anything. Deborah also has snow shoes for adventuring which was one of the trip highlights. As the listing says there is no running water but there is potable water you can get from a short walk, but it was nice to feel rugged. Additionally if anyone has asthma the stove may be an issue since with high winds some smoke can get into the cabin.
We saw one moose on our way out near the town. It was also the best star gazing we’ve ever seen. We will 100% have to come back and recommend anyone come here for their next get away.

2 nights at Coyote Mountain, Crestone Open Sky
It was very peaceful. Great views of the Rockies and surrounding area. Owners are helpful, pleasant & have great suggestions. Tent is roomy, king bed was comfortable, temperatures in the 20s but we kept warm with the wonderful bedding. Table available and cushy chair inside the tent. Two outdoor chairs available if needed. The shower was super hot which I LOVE!!! Clean restroom. Very earth friendly. Soap, TP and bath towels were provided. Easy access to activities around the area. We visited Great Sand Dunes National Park and the quirky Alien Watchtower. There is a community park in Crestone, a small natural foods grocery store and a couple of restaurants to try out. We tried the pizza place that serves alcohol and the food was great! Highly recommend this place to stay. We are relaxed and regenerated after our visit! The resident dog was an added bonus!! She greeted us when we came home and in morning and evenings!!

We stayed in Blue Bear and had a lovely time! The amenities are great (outhouse, some snacks, refrigerator, power, grill, etc). The view from the cabin and scenery around it is beautiful. Highly recommend.

Upon arrival, I got to meet Linda- one of the amazing hosts, and her very friendly dogs and goats! 😍
This was truly the perfect little getaway from Denver! You have everything you need in this cozy and spacious spot!
I spent two nights up here by myself. Spent the day hiking Brainard Lake, then getting cozy by the outdoor and indoor fireplace. My last morning here, I woke up to a Winter Wonderland! Wow! I would have stayed an extra night, but sadly it was already booked. I will definitely be back again soon! 🤩

We were glad to get out. It was easy to find and was pretty peaceful overall.
Unfortunately there was a burn ban so no fire but they had the set up for it.
John was helpful and nice would love to go back when we have more time and maybe when it warms up a bit. Was still a bit chilly at night.

This land is beautiful, the lodge even better. But what made it all worth it was the reassurance that everything was going to work out. I had constant communication with Cesar as we had been travelling 18 hrs from Houston Texas. They made everything easy, asking questions and being patient. The lodge was stocked with necessities and even provided a grill, propane, a boot brush and even more two sources of heat. We were able to chop our own wood as well as purchase them from Cesar. It was all worth the drive and made my husband's and I anniversary exciting.

We had a lovely time in this A frame Cabin! Directions to the cabin are very clear, and I was welcomed upon our arrival. The short walk from parking is close to the amenities like the shower house and composting toilet, but far enough into the trees to feel private. The wood stove was an absolute win, as it made our winter camping feel luxurious and cozy. Our dog happily laid by our side while we played card games by the warmth of the fire. This was the best way to unplug without giving up comfort. Honestly cell reception at the cabin was a little too good considering that purpose. We only wish we had more time to spend at this site. We spent a lot of our stay in steamboat springs, so unfortunately we did not get the opportunity to use the outdoor firepit and cook set up.
Everything worked very well for the two of us, and there are lots of beds for a larger group. I anticipate the loft bedroom may be too firm for the average guest, and probably still quite cold in the winter. There is lots of cookware provided, but you may need more cutlery if in a larger group. The wood stove also might be tough for anyone with asthma or respiratory sensitivities, as we had to keep a window open to try to alleviate the smoke smells even after adjusting all of the vents on the stove.

I loved car camping out here. The sweetest lady runs this place. I genuinely do recommend this to anyone who’s wanting to get out of the house for a night or two. The alpacas are truly adorable too make sure to visit with them when you got out!!
