    40 acres of open desert above a water gully. Perfect for off-road vehicles and true off grid camping. The acreage is mostly untouched the only things on the property are two trailers with fences, a water tank and a dumpster. There are two small roads that cars can use but there is no paved spot to turn around so be ready to reverse, do a 8 point turn or off road through soft sand(experienced off roaders only-very soft sand you will get stuck if not careful). You can park on the roads to avoid getting stuck and RVs should stay by the entrance because there is more room to maneuver where the roads are connected. The property runs from the dumpster(entrance) to the bottom of the slope(there is a pink marker). Camp/off road anywhere in between but be wary of going off the roads because the sand is very soft and you will get stuck if you don’t have experience with this type of terrain or an improper vehicle. This property is truly for off-grid campers, there are no facilities so bring every thing you need and enjoy the nature

    This open camp tent area is owned by (and was/is built by) the former HGTV host of the show "Tiny House Builders". The site also houses a "wooden tent" or micro glamping pod named "The Little Lantern" (a second listing) that is fun to check out, take pix of, store gear in- the structures serve as windbreaks and shade walls for tent campers and you can hang out on the benches near them, use their fire pits, and so on. The owner is also the author of several design and budget-build/reuse books (the bestseller "Micro Shelters" and others). Decades back this land was the site of an old RV park, so we've been in the long process of cleaning it up and removing junk from some corners of the site- but a bit still remains (its NOT pristine- still in the works). As a result you'll find some cool, weird, and unusual detritus and salvage out here (but not so much close to the camp spots)- old car parts, industrial knobs and dials- feel free to explore. Camp at your own risk though if you wander off to check this stuff out. The immediate camping area is cleared/clean. This has made it a favorite spot for junk collectors and photographers (we've found everything from old coins, to actual silver, cool rocks/geodes, and vintage car parts). This place would also make for a great spot for video or fashion shoots (which aren't allowed unless you seek separate permission from us!). Its a dirt site, but easy to get into, easy to pull into and turn around in (even with an RV), and you basically have about 5 acres all to yourself in most cases. There is one other camp site on the property (two total- the little lantern, and the van area for tenting- they are separate and spread out). Note: As I'm not sure of the current hip camp/country standings (new vague rules), I had removed this listing/put it on "hold", but it keeps going live/not adjusting- for that reason I'm just going to keep it live and allow people to book/stay until things are figured out by hip camp (so as not to inconvenience anyone).

    I spent two nights on Memorial Day weekend with my 10 year old son who loves to scavenge for trinkets, and he was entertained the entire time. He also loved the micro structure as a hangout spot. I got what I was hoping for out of this site and had a nice stay. Super quiet with good stargazing and privacy. Very easy to get to Joshua Tree National Park, and many amenities close by. Derek was helpful and communicative, so we felt great about the whole experience.

    This was my second visit to el ranchito and I’ll be back many times. Steve has created a beautiful oasis in the desert and takes care to make certain everyone is respectful of each other and the land. Both of my kids came with me this time and they felt the same way. We slept on hammocks and the party that was going on next to us noticed we were going to bed and immediately wound down. That doesn’t happen at every hip camp or campground one goes to. The facilities are amazing… Like a spa in the middle of nowhere. The best part is that there is no pretentiousness that comes with typical southern California spas and resorts. Anyone and everyone would feel at home here, whether you’re looking for a wilderness experience or posh glamping. It is priceless to be able to soak in a hot tub and sauna under pristine skies at night after climbing all day at Joshua tree. Sublime.

    Their site was a perfect spot for us to start and end our days. They provided everything we needed to be comfortable. It happened that when we stayed it was the "hottest days of the year so far" and so we spent most of our day time away checking out sites etc. Id love to come back during some cooler days so that I can spend more time at the camp. Hosts were very responsive to any questions I had along the way. Would book here again if I return to the area.

    10/10 stay. The property was super easy to find with Archie’s directions on the property description. The dirt road from the main highway to the property was very well maintained and easy to drive on even with just 2WD. There was cell service all throughout the property as well which was a nice bonus considering campsites in the park don’t have it. Great location for stargazing. Super close to Joshua trees twentynine palms entrance. If you’re scared of no restrooms on the property, there’s public restrooms like 5 minutes away at Joshua tree national park association which are really well maintained. Archie was also very responsive through text and the app with any questions I had. As a solo female camper I felt very safe on the property. I’d definitely stay here again.

    The site is very primitive, which is exactly what I wanted. It's 3 acres of flat and beautiful desert! Quiet somewhat remote, yet only 15 minutes from twentynine Palms. Depending on rain and or when the grade the main road, it can be sketchy turning on to her road. Hire clearance vehicles are highly recommended. I never had a problem with a Nissan Rogue. The night sky is absolutely amazing! If you are into primitive desert camping, this is definitely the place for you!

    We spent three nights at Rebecca’s with our two kids and a small RV. It was very easy to get to and convenient to 29 Palms, both the town and the park entrance. There’s some road noise but very quiet otherwise. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets. It was nice to have a well maintained outhouse and a dumpster available. Thanks so much Rebecca!

    The space was expansive and we really enjoyed the hot tub and sauna every day after hiking. The manager was quick to respond to our messages and had great recs for hikes and dinner spots. Our only negative was the wind. Because it's so open there is nothing to break the wind near the tent sites. Some small windbreaks with rebar and railroad ties could vastly improve the sites so tents were less affected.

    We loved camping here. We brought all of our camping supplies because we were coming from another camping trip in Anza-Borrego. We barely used any of our other camping supplies because everything else was taken care of for us. The communal kitchen and shower was amazing. My friend had fun laying on the lounge chairs and exploring the area. I really liked the truck that we slept in and the composting toilet really came in handy. We ended up having to leave a little bit early because of work things, but I am very grateful for the time that we spent there.The overall vibe of the area is amazing and I would highly recommend this camping spot for anyone who enjoys the desert, but needs some creature comforts.

    I loved this truck. It was so cozy, and it felt like luxury on a long camping trip not to have to set up all my own gear. The communal space has everything you need to cook, and the truck was so comfortable with amazing personality. Had been considering tent camping in the area and was very glad I didn’t- it would’ve been tough with the wind! Plus the truck provided shade and a wind block during the day to lounge in the chairs provided. Can’t recommend this enough!

    Beautiful open land with gorgeous sunsets and stargazing. There are other trailers in the same vicinity, but they are far enough away that you basically have the space to yourself. We brought a propane fire pit to use, but there is a large private fire pit provided if you have room to bring firewood. Also a basic outdoor kitchen area with running water, soap, cast iron, dishes and silverware, propane outdoor stove, and shower area (complete with propane) which I did not get a chance to use. Amazing vibes all around. It got chilly at night, but there were plenty of blankets and pillows provided along with a small propane heater for use inside the truck. Be sure you are close with who you are camping with as the composting toilet (bucket with wood chips and a toilet seat) is on the deck next to the entrance to the truck, but who’s watching?! 💁‍♀️

    Steve is a thoughtful host and fascinating human being. This is a luxury-laden little resort getaway with desert backcountry charm and wide open skies. There are two adorable dogs on property and we couldn’t get enough of them. Jacuzzi, sauna, Wi-Fi, hammocks and a dump station in the middle of nowhere. The dry sauna is crazy tech I had no idea existed. Combine the two level shipping container structure with the pack of coyotes yipping at dusk, it feels like Frederick Remington survived Fallout.

    You will have the entire five acre property to yourself surrounded by natural Mojave landscape up on Copper Mountain Mesa in north Joshua Tree, elevation 2500 feet. This provides expansive views in every direction. To the south are the mountains of JTNP including Indian Cove. To the west Mt. San Gorgonio, which is often snow-capped in winter and spring. To the east is the ridge of Borland Pass and the border with Twentynine Palms and beyond. At night, of course, the stars come out in every direction and put on a show. I’ve dubbed the place Tranquility Base because it is quiet, serene and much like I imagine the moon to be. It is a wide open, rugged spot of stark natural beauty with amazing skies. However, you are not alone. The flora includes numerous creosote, desert senna and cactus. All bloom beautiful colors in spring. The fauna includes roadrunners, jackrabbits and incredible lizards. Evidence of snakes lay in the loose sand of the low washes but I have never seen one. Guests must have a self-contained RV or camper van because you will need to bring everything you need, shade included. This is primitive, dry camping with no restrooms. Multiple vehicles OK when at least one is an RV equipped with a toilet available to everyone with you. Guests are welcome to pitch a tent in one of the sandy areas but much of the surface is covered with rocks. There is a concrete pad from a long gone homestead cabin that is great for tents, chairs and a bbq. I’ve put a large tree stump there to serve as a “bar” or table. Tranquility Base is about 12 miles northeast of Joshua Tree village center much of it on unpaved roads which can be bumpy. En route you will pass several landmarks. This includes artist Simi Debah’s sculpture garden, Daniel Popper’s massive “Transmission” sculpture and the Joshua Tree Lake and Campground, site of the twice yearly Joshua Tree Music Festival. Come on out and relax.

Bordering the 40 acres, our “neighbors” are three large empty lots and government land with no structures. We are located at the base of Copper Mountain.  The soil here is very special. It has a magical mixture of inorganic materials, like crystals and metals, that have eroded down from Copper Mountain, mixed in a matrix of organic material, like grasses that have been made into a fine powder. The result is a natural landscape of orgone generating dirt. You can feel the energy here. There are plenty of dirt roads around the property for casual strolls and mountain biking... or take a short climb up the sandy incline at the back of the property and panoramic views of Joshua Tree await. This listing is not for the inexperienced camper! Please pack in, pack out all your trash and leave no trace besides footsteps. You will have access to a 12 foot (!!) handcrafted solid wood picnic table, handmade stone fire ring and brand new 24x12 foot wooden deck. VERY IMPORTANT: You must have a self-contained toilet system. Please pack out all your own waste. You will also need to bring your own WATER. Thank you!  4-wheel drive highly recommended but regular cars, RVs, Airstreams have previously gotten to PRIVATE 40 by taking it slow and easy with extra care. If you do get stuck (it NEVER happened before, but just in case)... you will need to call your own towing company. So please be mindful and understand your vehicle's limits. Wake at dawn to see the jackrabbits and listen to the coyotes howl as you fall asleep. Baby quail all in a line may entertain you. The starry nights are glorious here with clear skies most of the time and a lot less light pollution in the desert compared to the cities. Also, we have no surrounding street lamps! Most will find they have good cell service at our location. #NoPowerLines at our property makes for a real wilderness feel, even though we are very close to nearby points of interest. If you're ready for peace and quiet and an amazing sunset and sunrise. There is a little something for everyone. There are hiking trails, rock climbing, sand dunes, perfect for side by side and dirt bike. Close to the Joshua tree lake bed and Comp Hill. The road in and out is passable by two wheel drive all the way to the camp area, but the trail continues on to the very top of the mountain for experience 4x4 drivers. Camp site one is in a fenced area all other campsites are not. Please bring enough water and sunscreen. Remember to Always look down where you are stepping.
