Running parallel down the state are Northern California’s two arteries of outdoor adventure—the coast and the mountains. Glamping opportunities abound, providing a touch of comfort and even luxury in the form of canvas tents, domes, tiny houses, and treehouses (perfect for a trip to the Redwood forests near Eureka). Along the coast, the terrain alternates between dramatic headlands, crescent beaches, and more redwoods, all begging to be explored on foot, bike, or surfboard (a wetsuit is a must). Just inland, vineyards dot the rolling hills in Sonoma, Napa, and Carmel valleys, where the bottle you pick up at a winery will taste amazing on the deck of your bell tent. Further east, the foothills of the Sierra Nevada offer rafting on the Yuba River and woodsy domes and yurts. Due to cold and snowy Winters, high-altitude destinations like Lake Tahoe, Mt. Shasta, Yosemite National Park, and Mammoth Lakes don’t have as many glamping options.
