Strawberry Fields Forever

5 sites · RVs5 acres · Watsonville, CA
Welcome to southern Santa Cruz County, home of some of the longest and most beautiful beaches in central California. We are located in La Selva Beach, a eight-minute walk to Manresa State Beach. We are a small, working farm with vegetable and flower gardens, chickens and bees. There are many excellent places to hike, walk, surf, swim, tide pool or just sit and enjoy the view. We offer quiet campsites with fantastic views of the three hundred acres of strawberry fields that back up to our property. Our campsites provide water and electric hookups and are only appropriate for self-contained recreational vehicles and trailers. One of the sites has no size constraints on RVs or trailers. Our Valley View site is limited to rigs 30 feet long or less (not including the tow vehicle). We do offer a port-a potty, but not sinks or showers. We do not accommodate on the ground tent camping or in your car camping. We love to host guests and will provide information about things to do and see in our area. We often loan our State Parks pass so that you can venture out to Point Lobos, Wilder Ranch, Sunset Beach, Natural Bridges and more. Our property is peaceful and restorative. You will not have a neighbor next to you. Each camp site includes a fire pit and a bundle of wood per night. We are 15 minutes from the village of Capitola, 30 minutes from downtown Santa Cruz and 45 minutes to Monterey. There is a Dump station 5 minutes down the road at the KOA (for a fee).

In 1969, 134 acres of this fertile coastline were rescued from commercial development and purchased by the Nature Conservancy. The Slide Ranch nonprofit organization was established in 1970, becoming one of the first Park Partners in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Fern Ridge Flats - Private Camping

Nestled in a canopy of redwoods, less than 10 miles from the beach sits a private and cozy campground. Fern Ridge Flats combines the best of Santa Cruz county. Abundant trees and misty mornings await you at our property in Aptos. Equipped with electricity, water, and a picnic table for your convenience. There are trails on the land for you to explore, animals, and nature to dive into. *************** Smoking and the use of drugs are strictly prohibited. This is a safe and quiet neighborhood with many families including my own. Please do not request to book if you have the intention of partying or using illegal substances. If these rules are violated, local authorities will be called and you will be removed from the campsite. *************** The campsite is less than a 5 minute walk from the parking spot but is relatively steep. Although it is paved it is not recommended for anyone with mobility issues. *************** As an added precaution to protect the lush landscape, the firepit at the campsite utilizes clean burning propane. We chose a burner that closely replicates the size and heat of a wood to enhance our campers' experience.

The best camping near Butano State Park guide

Overview

About

Hidden in the Santa Cruz mountains, Butano State Park is not explored enough. An earthy, damp forest of redwood giants, there is something magical about this park. Maybe it’s the resilience of the redwoods that continue to stand tall after being scorched inside out-- now hollow and charred, these survivors serve as reminders of long-ago forest fires. Some are even first-growth redwoods, hundreds of years old. Or maybe it’s because there are so many absurdly yellow banana slugs and newts living here. Either way, Butano is an amazing state park and nature lovers are guaranteed to fall in love at first sight.

Notable campgrounds

  • Drive-in Campsites: Nestled among the redwoods, these 21 sites offer a classic camping experience with the convenience of vehicle access.
  • Walk-in Campsites: For a more secluded stay, choose one of the 18 walk-in sites, offering a serene setting and closer connection to nature.
  • Backcountry Trail Camp: Adventure seekers can hike to this remote camp with 8 sites, perfect for a tranquil escape in the wilderness.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early: Reservations can be made 6 months in advance starting at 8am PST, so plan ahead to secure your spot.
  • Be flexible: Consider midweek stays or off-peak seasons for better availability and a quieter experience.
  • Use multiple channels: Reserve online or call the toll-free number at 1-800-444-7275 to increase your chances.
  • Explore nearby camping options: If Butano is full, look for other nearby state parks or campgrounds to enjoy the region's natural beauty.

When to go

The best time to visit Butano State Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer offers warm days perfect for hiking, while winter can be wet but offers a unique, lush landscape. Avoid park closures by checking for seasonal trail and campground updates before your trip.

Know before you go

  • Check for trail closures due to forest health projects and plan your hikes accordingly.
  • Remember that dogs are allowed in campgrounds and paved areas but not on trails, except for service animals.
  • Park hours are from sunrise to sunset, so plan your visit within these times.
  • Be prepared for no shower facilities, but rest assured that drinking water is available.
  • For a smooth visit, familiarize yourself with the park's rules, including the prohibition of drones.
