Your guide to camping in Abalone Campground

Overview

Biking

Biking to Patrick’s Point is an awesome experience - the slower pace of a bike versus a car allows visitors to really soak in and appreciate all the seriously riveting beauty. The trails in Patrick’s Point take riders past coastal scenery on challenging, enjoyable rides.

Fishing

Surf fishing at Patrick’s Point is a popular activity, as this is one of favorite places for local anglers. The best times of the day for fishing here include: two hours before daybreak, two hours before high tide, at high tide and two hours after high tide. Fishermen may catch things like perch, rock fish, cabezon, lingcod, leopard shark, pacific sand dab and more.

Hiking

Patrick’s Point keeps visitors coming back time and time again with its varied scenery and breathtaking views that never grow old. The park has about six miles of trails in total, most leading to coastal overlooks. In addition, a few short, steep trails allow visitors to reach points at the tops of Ceremonial Rock and Lookout Rock. These points are old sea stacks that have since been left dry by the ocean’s receding.

Paddling

Patrick’s Point is a wonderful spot to go sea kayaking. Kayaking in Trinidad Bay allows visitors to explore unique rock formations and kelp beds while looking out for seal colonies and sea birds. Outfitters in the area offer guided kayak tours for inexperienced adventurers.

Climbing

Although there is a no bolting rule effective in Patrick’s Point State Park, the park is still an awesome spot for a little bouldering. The rock here is solid and enjoyable to climb. Some of our favorite, most noteworthy places routes include South Face, The Edge Route and Zig Zag.

Surfing

Patrick’s Point State Park can be a great place to catch a wave. The beach here is a reef and point break that supplies surfers with fairly constant waves. Area enthusiasts claim winter is the best time to surf here. The swells here can be big and dangerous, so be aware of your surroundings. All in all, this is a typically non-crowded, beautiful spot to ride a wave.

Wildlife watching

Patrick’s Point is the ideal place for a scavenger hunt of wildlife. On the shore, parkgoers can listen for (or often see) sea lions and harbor seals. Sometimes, migrating whales can be spotted here as well. During low tide, visitors can do tidepooling where they are likely to see a variety of different wildlife. Bears, deer, and several types of bird species have been spotted at Patrick’s Point.
