Discover the most magical spots to pitch your tent or park your rig on your next Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove on the Potomac adventure.
Being President of the United States is a stressful gig. When possible, Lyndon Baines Johnson was said to come visit this very spot to escape the hustle and bustle of Washington. The LBJ Memorial Grove was designed as a living memorial to the 36th president.
A wooden footbridge leads visitors from the Pentagon parking lot to Lady Bird Johnson Island, where the memorial is located. Here visitors will find two different areas to explore. The plaza features a pink granite monolith that was quarried in his home state of Texas. Around the plaza, you'll find quotes from the President engraved into stone tablets. The second area is a grass meadow with trails that are shaded by a grove of white pine and dogwood trees.
The short trails around the park are perfect for walking, biking or bird watching. The park sits in between the Boundary Channel and the Potomac River, making it a great spot to explore by kayak and canoe. Don't forget to pack a picnic! You'll also find several picnic tables where you can sit and relax.
The park itself is small, so this would be just one of many stops for your Washington D.C. adventure. With so much to see in the area, you should extend your stay with Hipcamp! We make it easy to search for public and private campground listings in any location.
