Discover the most magical spots to pitch your tent or park your rig on your next Fort Raleigh National Historic Site adventure.
What happened to the Lost Colony of Roanoke? Okay, no one knows. You might have a theory or two once you visit this national historic site on Roanoke Island. This was the first settlement in the New World.
The Visitor Center is packed with artifacts from the Lost Colony that, well, just disappeared. (And there's air conditioning if you visit on a hot day!) You can see a cool reproduction of the colony's fort and watch a movie that details what little is known about Roanoke. The park rangers also give regular presentations that walk through the theories about the colony's disappearance.
Come in the summer to see a play about the Lost Colony staged at the monument's amphitheater. The play has become an institution in itself, going on for 80 years now. There are plenty of walking trails through lush landscape and even down to the beach. Pack a picnic and let the kids run around. You'll have to pay a little extra to visit the gardens though.
Camp right on Roanoke Island or on the nearby Outer Banks at a spot you find at Hipcamp. Pitch your tent in the woods or on a farm, and cozy up around a campfire at night to enjoy your stay.
