Confederates won a battle in Chickamauga, Georgia, in September 1863. The lands just north of Atlanta, near the Tennessee border, saved the city at that time. When the Union took control of Chattanooga, it served as a staging point for the invasion of the south.
Other sites include Lookout Mountain Battlefield is a promontory point that overlooks Chattanooga.
