Baseball fields, horsehoe pits, potential bald eagle sightings, and steelhead salmon jumping up rushing Steamboat Creek waterfalls. This is one American campground. Ten campsites mean you’ll have people to play you in baseball or horseshoes, but never long lines at the vault toilet. Bring your own water and crackerjacks.

We stayed just up the road from here at the group site called Steamboat Ball Field. It’s a very rustic site with an open field and a picnic shelter. Surrounded by a lush and vibrant green old-growth forest, this is a great place for a family reunion or large gathering. Be warned though, it fills up quick! You must reserve many months in advance, but it’s worth it. About 20 miles East is Umpqua Hot Springs, the perfect day trip from this spot. It has 8 hot pools cascading over a cliff into the Umpqua River, much like an infinity pool. This place is busy too, so avoid peak times, but do make the journey as it is a truly magical place.
