Beautiful spot for camping. Waking up to the mountains was wonderful. Definitely windy at night but didn’t bother us! There was a camper there which we thought was someone else staying there so we were confused finding the right spot but then figured it out. Setup my roof top tent on my Jeep just had to maneuver into a flat spot and put some bricks under the back wheel and worked great.

While I forgot some important things, it rained quite a bit and my tent broke on me and i had to sleep in my car. Despite all that, it was wonderful. In fact the view by itself was worth having to deal with my trip going wrong. The fall in VA is so gorgeous and being able to watch the beautiful sunset along the blue ridge mountains was exactly what i needed. There is a nice little platform where i spent most of my time reading while my dogs ran around in the tall grass. Would highly recommend this spot and it is a 5-10 min drive to beautiful trails and otter lake. Will definitely be booking here again.

Beautiful place, and great place to get away from it all. Absolutely no cell service. Enjoyed my night there

This site was great. If you're on the fence based on the reviews, just go. The donkeys only make their calls once every hour, maybe longer throughout the day. Not a single one of us woke up at night because of it (and I am, truly and honestly, the world's lightest sleeper - I'm Autistic and my sensory inputs get overloaded real easy). You can sometimes hear car or motorcycle engines, but it sounds like they're in the valley of a mountain, not like they're on the road right next to you (or coming up the driveway). One time we heard a few ambulance/fire sirens for awhile (1/4 nights, for 5 min max). Overall, you get peace and quiet and feel isolated. With a teeny bit of bug spray and three citronella candles, we had long nights on the platform bug free (without a fire). While you don't absolutely need a truck/SUV/4wd to get up to the site parking, the road is precarious (not a relatively flat gravel road; there are a lot of sizable dips/troughs in the red clay dirt/gravel mix). We bottomed out a lot in a Honda Civic and a friend with a Honda Element even felt a bit nervous about it, because of its age/lagging. But, the views are breathtaking, its spacious, and well worth the price. My only tip: there is limited shade at the site during the day unless you are in the woods behind it; so, bring your own shade system if you want to stay where the views are and it's the summer (otherwise you'll be moving around following a small tree's shadow all day).

Extraordinary Views and Donkeys
Group trip ·
Overall we had a lovely stay. We booked site #2 but there was a mix-up and we ended up staying at site #1 (make sure to confirm directions to your site with the host because the directions posted on Hipcamp take you to the same place regardless of which site you book). Pros: - Views: Extraordinary! - Amenities: Nice platform and two fire pits. Cute antique farming decor placed nicely around - Area: solid gas station nearby, gorgeous clear swimming hole (otter creek) just a few minutes away, beautiful area Cons: At night, the sound of donkeys neighing (sounded sort of like pigs getting slaughtered) was extremely loud, as were the sounds of cars driving by (it sounded like both were right next to us). We felt a little bit unsafe with the cars, so had difficulty sleeping. No one came to our tent so it seems safe, but I would *highly* recommend strong ear plugs. Waking up to the mountain views was worth it though, they truly are spectacular!

Beautiful But Interesting
Group trip ·
The view was absolutely spectacular. However, as a solo female traveler I felt very unsafe. There were gunshots close by as well as what sounded like a pig being slaughtered… Which should be totally expected in the mountains like that! Just be aware that it is a very remote spot and that the road is a little difficult in a standard car! Other than my own experience it was a totally awesome sight, I would recommend to a more prepared camper, or group:)
