Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. We'd like to share the camp with others and see it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky.

Thunder Bridge offers a serene camping experience with a friendly host, Adam, who is highly praised for his responsiveness and hospitality. The campsite is appreciated for its cleanliness, spaciousness, and well-maintained facilities, including clean bathrooms and hot showers. Campers enjoy the privacy of the secluded sites, the natural beauty of the surroundings, and the convenience of amenities like a ping pong table and access to local attractions. However, some guests noted limited cell service, although Wi-Fi is available at the bathhouse area.

Cool, quirky place

We stayed 2 nights in early March and loved it! As noted in the description, the site acted as a boys camp and had other uses in the past. Glimpses of this past abound on the property - the numerous small buildings, the obstacle/gymnastics course equipment, and the athletic field to name just a few. The rv sites are on the edge of the large field part of the property, and each has a picnic table and fire pit. In the trails in the woods are the cabins and tent sites. There is an artist in residence. The trails through the woods are great to get a nice mile walk with your dog. Adam is working through updating the buildings, and 4 or 5 are painted bright hews of green, yellow, blue, etc, creating a welcoming environment and transformation from their past. There is a fun white cow statue at the entrance, welcoming you to the property. It’s easy access to Lexington, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and many local hikes. We really enjoyed the atmosphere, and would happily return if in the area. Adam was helpful, very responsive and easy to communicate with. He was concerned he wouldn’t be there when we arrived, and sent a video driving through the property and showing exactly where the site was. He was there when we got there, but the video was appreciated and helpful.

Everything was awesome! Very well maintained, bathrooms were clean. Barely saw other campers. Dogs absolutely loved it. Slept in tents one night and in the cabin one night. Both options were awesome. The front porch was the best.

Adam’s hosting was efficient and friendly. The Bear Cabin was clean with lots of beds, tables for activities , and a great yard. There was a chilly rain, so the fireplace and firewood was a great warming option. Rain on the tin roof sounded soothing for hours. Bathhouse and pavilion were clean and nice extra space. The WiFi there pulled down a movie in less than a minute . Lots of deer around and very peaceful.

Great cabin and efficient hosting by Adam. Met at front of property and showed us the bathhouse and cabin quickly. Found the huge cabin with lots of beds, big yard and firewood stacked as requested. Chilly rain started later, so fireplace was nice gathering place. Bath house was clean, and WiFi fast, downloaded a 2 hour movie from Apple in less than a minute. Lots of deer and privacy
