Get into low gear and enjoy the slow pace and peace of our little working farm on the edge of the hill country. Low Gear Farmstead's 75 acres border the lovely San Saba River, providing campers the opportunity to swim, wade, fish and paddle. Farm animals including dairy goats, chickens, and horses inhabit the property, but wildlife such as deer, wild turkey, ringtail, fox and armadillo is also abundant. Bird watchers will be delighted at the diversity of birds, especially in spring. Don't forget to look up at night as our dark skies provide excellent stargazing on clear nights and a very visible Milky Way. We limit the number of campsites and spread them out so that campers may enjoy privacy and seclusion. Campsites are provided with compost toilets and most sites also have a fire ring. 4WD is not required unless we have had heavy rains, otherwise most vehicles, except very low clearance ones, do fine. The nearest town, Menard, is about a 12 minute drive from the property and has a grocery store, gas stations, a couple restaurants, a pub and a bakery. Lovers of history might enjoy visiting the Presidio de San Saba, about 20 minutes from the farm, as well as the historic Pioneers Rest Cemetery in town. Low Gear Farmstead is a safe, welcoming space for queers and POC.

We had a great weekend relaxing at Orchard Hilltop. Can't wait to come back when the trees are full of leaves. Perfect place to just chill out for the weekend.

I recently stayed at this secluded campsite, and it was an absolute dream. The highlight of the experience was the private river access, where I could relax by the water and enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature. The campsite is incredibly private, making it perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. The night sky views were nothing short of breathtaking—I've never seen so many stars in one place! It's an ideal spot for stargazing, and the tranquility of the surroundings made it even more magical. Whether you're into fishing, kayaking, or simply enjoying the serenity, this campsite offers a little bit of everything. If you want a quiet, remote getaway with stunning natural beauty, this campsite is an absolute gem. I can't wait to return!

The most beautiful properly I have ever spent time on. We camped at the stargazing site but took a little walk around with one of the dogs Bjorn as it seemed no one else was around and we wouldn’t be bothering anyone. The river running through the property is incredible. The toilet at the site is just what you need & nothing more (bring your own TP). The best part of the trip was getting to spend time with Bjorn. My dog recently died and Bjorn’s companionship was so welcome. When it rained a bit during the night we let him into the tent and he slept on the floor. He knows a few tricks if you’ve got a treat or two. Bjorn was a great camp host.

Lowgear was an amazing site. The kids had a blast, the stars were amazing and the river was nice and cold. I would definitely recommend 100%. 👍 We loved having Bjorn (The camps friendly pup 🐶) join us for our stay also!

We have been to this property several times and have stayed at a couple of their sites. Our favorite one by far is river view. The walk down to wade in the water only takes a few minutes. You also have a beautiful view of the water from the site and get to hear the water rippling at night while you snuggle up in your tent. It’s so peaceful and the hosts are always so responsive and helpful to accommodate all your needs. Will be back again!!

Great place !! Wife and i got the Skyview spot and the stars at night were amazing ! Sadly it was super windy that day so there were loads of dust blowing from the spot. Super primitive spots , with outhouse and besr part it was right next to the river ! Cold and enjoyable! They have aome farm animals along with doggies that passed by to say hi .
