I ended up going to stay at the lake nearby instead of using the camping spot. It was very confusing to find, Google maps has the road named wrong that it is on and the owner wasn’t sure what the correct name of the road was. Once we found it, it was just the dead end of the road and someone had recently been stuck so we opted out and went to the lake because it was currently raining when we went and we were nervous that overnight it might make it too muddy for us to drive out. In the end though you would be very secluded and quiet!

Secluded site but needs work.
Group trip
Spot was relatively easy to find, with help from Shannon. Shannon responded quickly to questions. The location is quiet and secluded, no other people, and a 5 minute drive from the lake. Partial views of the southern Sangre de Cristo and the nearby surrounding hills. There is a treatable water source about 10 mins walk nearby in the stream below the dam. Mixed feelings about the site, honestly. The recommended spot is in a wash with long grass, not ideal in itself. We arrived and the recommended site was drying mud. Camping in a wash is not something I would recommend during certain times of the year, like mid-late summer. In fact, the recent rains had washed over the road with some significant erosion on the other side of the road. There was a fair amount of trash, both from the wash and also from where people had dumped trash over the embankment nearby. We wound up camping on the road itself. The site honestly needs some work. It would be helpful if the owner could carve out a camping platform on the hillside up from the wash. A picnic table (minimally) would also make the site much better for a shorter or longer stay.

This site is indeed secluded and very quiet to boot. It's a great alternative to staying in a crowded campsite. I very much enjoyed my stay and would recommend it to others.

Such a beautiful spot and Shannon was really helpful in her description and directions. We took our sons for the first camping trip and it was great.
