The best camping near Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park guide

Overview

About

Geology lovers, get ready — Sun Lakes-Dry Falls offers a peek into the Ice Age. Prefer adventure to history? The park has you covered, too. In summer, try hiking, fishing, and paddling; in winter, opt for skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

Once home to a massive waterfall, Dry Falls is now a huge cliff with breathtaking views. Imagine the thundering waters as you look over the lake and golf course.

Down below, cool off in the swim area or challenge the family to mini golf. The adventure starts 35 miles from Grand Coulee Dam and 4 miles from Coulee City.

Inside the park, you’ll find 150 campsites, as well as 41 sites with RV hookups. Fire pits, restrooms, and showers keep everyone comfortable. It’s a good idea to reserve ahead in the summer. High winds are a possibility year-round — stake your tent carefully!

Notable campgrounds

  • Standard Campsites: Nestled amid the park's natural beauty, these 96 sites offer a classic camping experience with fire pits and proximity to restrooms and showers.
  • Full Hook-Up Sites: For those seeking modern comforts, 41 sites provide full utility hook-ups, ensuring a convenient stay amid the wilds.
  • Group Camp: Ideal for larger gatherings, this tent-only area accommodates up to 75 people, perfect for a communal outdoor adventure.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early, especially for summer stays, as the park's popularity can lead to quickly filled reservations.
  • Consider off-peak seasons for more availability and a quieter camping experience.
  • Keep an eye on cancellation policies and check back regularly for newly available sites.
  • Explore nearby camping options to maximize your chances of securing a spot during busy times.

When to go

The best time to visit Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park is during the summer months, when the park is fully operational and the weather is ideal for outdoor activities. However, be mindful of the potential for heavy winds. Winter offers a quieter visit but with limited services, as water may be turned off at campsites.

Know before you go

  • Check burn bans and ensure fires are only lit in designated pits and grills.
  • Remember to purchase a Discover Pass for park access, with annual and one-day options available.
  • Be aware of the seasonal water shutoff to campsites starting October 24th.
  • Keep dogs on a leash and follow all park rules for a safe and enjoyable visit.
  • Plan your water activities accordingly, as some are restricted on Park Lake during certain dates.
