The best camping near Missouri Headwaters State Park guide

Overview

About

Lewis and Clark made camp here in 1805, though we think the amenities are a little better developed at this point. Soak in the beauty of 532 acres made of winding rivers and brambly rock outcroppings. The area used to be a boon for fishers and trappers, and we can't say much has changed. Cast a line and catch some of the bountiful fish at the riverside, or do up your trip in a canoe just like the famous explorers themselves. Heritage exhibits and interpretive displays add to the nostalgic feel here.

Notable campgrounds

  • River Junction Campground: Nestled at the water's edge, perfect for anglers and boaters alike.
  • Clark's Lookout Campsite: Offers stunning views and a serene spot to reflect on the park's rich history.
  • Sacajawea Campground: Ideal for families, with easy access to trails and interpretive displays.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early, especially for peak summer months, to secure your ideal campsite.
  • Consider visiting during the shoulder seasons for more availability and quieter stays.
  • Keep an eye on the park's alerts and closures to plan your trip accordingly.
  • Explore nearby camping options if the park is fully booked or for a different experience.

When to go

The park is open year-round, but the best time to visit is from late spring to early fall when the weather is warm and all facilities are available. Winter can be harsh, and some amenities may be closed, so check ahead for seasonal restrictions.

Know before you go

  • Check the current list of restrictions and closures before your visit for any updates.
  • Montana residents can enjoy free daily entrance with the state parks fee included in their vehicle registration.
  • Nonresidents should be prepared to pay a day use entrance fee, with discounts for walk-ins and cyclists.
  • Some amenities are seasonal, so verify their availability if you're visiting during off-peak times.
  • Pets are allowed in the park, but ensure they are kept on a leash and under control.
