Reflections Homestead

3 sites · Lodging10 acres · Cold Brook, NY
I am Karl and with my wife Danielle together we own 10 acres of peacefully settled forest on the edge of over 10,000 acres of State Forest land. It is on a seasonal road. I have no registered address, but a small sign marks my access road as Jacob Lane. This is a tribute to my friends. The Amish that helped me build our off-grid cabin. It is very quiet here. My closest neighbor about a half mile away and I kind of like it that way. There are seasonal roads here that allow four wheelers that behave themselves to buzz by from time to time. The forest rangers and DEC officers that patrol here keep a tight rein on the forest and its preservation. We have one guest cabin and several places a tent or RV can park. There are no hookups. Water is a precious commodity here. We capture rainwater and filter what we drink and cook with. Please bring some potable water. We do have spring water available but it's a drive. We are currently working on a well so this may not be a permanent condition. I first came here about 15 years ago. I would like to try and see if others would enjoy what we have made our lives. Be alone or follow me on my daily adventures. I do like to talk and although I don't lie, stretching the truth is an artform I have perfected so be prepared. There is a state-run beach and picnic area about 3 minute drive away on the Hinkley Reservoir. We are about 15 to 20 minutes away from the Herkimer Diamond Mines. You can bike, hike, nature watch or just enjoy the peacefulness of the tree you chose to sit against. Down and ready firewood is everywhere if you want to bend over and pick it up. You can possess firearms on the property, but you may not discharge one without prior approval unless it's to save your life or that of another. There are places not far away that you can legally shoot and enjoy yourself. There are traditional outhouses on the property and for those that know how cat holing is allowed. Ask if unsure. No dumping tanks or portable toilets anywhere and that includes the outhouses. The state of New York has facilities at campgrounds that do a proper job with that type of waste. If you stop by, I will see you. If not go find what you seek and enjoy what has been created for everyone to pursue. Happiness. Peace be with you. Karl and Danielle

They are both part German Shepherd, so they are protective. They will bark at you but are not aggressive. Let us know if you're not comfortable with dogs and we can make sure they are inside when you arrive. I am not able to accommodate RVs or trailers. I have a very long, skinny driveway with no way to turn around, and there is nowhere to to park something as large as a trailer. The camp site is not accessible by car. You'll have to park in the driveway and then bring your gear back to the site, which is about a 2 minute walk. All vehicles must be parked in the driveway. We do have a wagon if you need it to carry your gear. We have animals on the property, including roosters who start crowing at sun up. Plan on being up early :)

Glamping in Upstate New York with a private bathroom guide

Overview

The rural playground of New Yorkers, Upstate New York packs in four seasons of postcard-ready  backdrops. Summer vacay? Drive your RV up to the Finger Lakes to lounge by sandy lakeside beaches. Fall camping trip? Hit the hiking trails of the Catskills or enjoy leaf-peeping to your heart's content at more than 150 state and national park sites. Winter getaway? Grab your skis and snowshoes and escape to the Adirondacks. Campers have just as many options, whether you prefer backcountry camping in the wilderness, a cozy log cabin, or an Insta-worthy glampsite. Just make sure to book ahead, especially from June through August.

Where to go

Hudson Valley & the Catskills

Close enough to NYC for a weekend break, head to the Hudson Valley to hop between Hudson River towns, picturesque vineyards, and farm-to-table restaurants. There’s great camping and hiking at Harriman State Park and Bear Mountain State Park, while Hudson River Islands State Park has kayak-in tent sites reachable only by water. Or head to the hills to explore the forest trails and wilderness areas of the Catskills Mountains.

The Adirondacks

With more than 6 million acres of rugged mountains, untamed forests, and glittering lakes, the Adirondacks is New York state’s largest park and home to its highest peaks. There are miles of hiking trails, canoe trails, and scenic byways to explore, plus dozens of campgrounds to choose from. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, seek out a secluded spot in the backcountry to pitch your tent—dispersed camping is permitted on state land in the area.

Central New York & Thousand Islands

Woodlands, lakes, and more than a few waterfalls dot the landscapes of central New York. In summer, head to the lakeside beaches at Green Lakes State Park, Gilbert Lake State Park, or Bowman Lake State Park, all of which have popular family campgrounds. To the north, the Thousand Islands region is a favorite for coastal campers with its fairy-tale castles, island campsites, and Great Lakes Seaway Trail.

Finger Lakes

With 11 lakes, a dozen state parks, and three renowned wine trails, you won’t get bored in the Finger Lakes. Check out waterfalls at Watkins Glen State Park and Buttermilk Falls State Park, fish for trout and salmon at Keuka Lake State Park, or lounge along white-sand beaches at Fair Haven Beach State Park.

Western New York

Nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the East,” Letchworth State Park is a must for hikers and leaf-peepers visiting western New York, along with nearby Allegany State Park. If you prefer coastal camping, you’ll find RV parks and campgrounds dotted along the shores of both Lake Erie to the west and Lake Ontario to the north. Or perhaps you’re heading to Niagara Falls, in which case you should book a campsite, cabin, or yurt at Four Mile Creek State Park, a short drive from the iconic falls.
