Easy entry off a quiet well maintained country road in the town of Conesville, NY. Sitting on 5 acres you will notice the beautiful views of the Catskill Mountains. Feel free to hike the entire property. Hike down the ravine approximately 80ft to the mountain fed creek. You will find massive boulders, and various artifacts as this property was once a mining operation dating back to the early 1920s. Be mindful of partially fallen trees (widow makers) on the hillside along the south end. It’s a steep hike down so get your hiking poles and good boots. The north end is an easier hike. If you find any cool artifacts they are yours to keep or just leave them and we will add them to the display for the new cabin. Check out the iconic ‘57 Chevy Bel Air halfway down the ravine. With your stay we are offering 20% off your cabin stay when it becomes available. 20 minutes to Windham, Minekill State Park and Bates State Forest(down the road.) The Milk Run is approximately 15 min away back toward the interstate. They have a dump station, gas station and they have great sandwiches for the ride home. So many great things to see, just ask. Learn more about this land: Reservations are open year-round. Campers will enjoy a lovely mix of New York wilderness and wildlife, but the property is only a mile from local restaurants, shops, and the quaint town of Afton. We have one space for an RV on a gravel pad, but depending on your vehicle's off-road ability and/or how dry it is, you are welcome to park a little further away from the road and closer to the wildlife. Site 1 is the gravel pad for RVs. There are no RV hookups and the site is close to the road. Site 2 is parking your vehicle or RV anywhere on the property. If your vehicle has 4-wheel drive, you can use the road down to the valley. The top 4 acres is a cleared, gently sloping field that goes back 600 feet from the road to a ridge of trees, where the largest part of the property starts. There is a road that was cut down to the valley (about 70 feet of descent) that is an easy walk. Although the top property has some spots with nice views, the true beauty of the property is the valley and the flowing creek. One-half of the lower property is a pine forest with many great camping spots for those who don't mind carrying their gear. The other half, where the road ends, is an open meadow. Vehicles with 4-wheel drive can park in the meadow next to the creek. When the wild plants of the meadow are high, I will cut a path through it for convenient access to the creek and other favorite spots. The crystal-clear, unpolluted creek has two places to swim, about 3-5 feet deep (depending on the season and what changes the last rains made), and is full of crayfish, salamanders, and even brook trout if you like to fish. My two boys (aged 9 and 11) never tire of exploring the forest, brook, and wildlife with me, and a dip in the cool brook is refreshing on a hot day. About a mile from the property, in town, there is a place to park for kayaking or fishing on the Susquehanna River. Oquaga State park is only 23 minutes away with fishing, boating, and a sandy beach on Arctic Lake. I hope you will have a lovely time camping with us! Occasionally, there are two noise-making businesses that you may want to know before booking. There is a private shooting club about 2.5 miles away that is open on the weekends. Normally we don't hear them, but they do occasionally, a couple times a year, have events that we hear. There is also a race track about 2 miles away that you can hear from the property on race nights, which are usually twice a month on a Friday, but they occasionally have additional special events. If you are looking for long-term camping, please let me know as we will definitely do discounts for weekly or monthly stays. Tiny Homes are also welcome.

Relatively short drives to local attractions include the newly renovated Holiday Mountain Ski & Fun Park (1.2 miles), Resorts World Catskills Casino (2.6 miles), the Kartrite Indoor Water Park (2.9 miles), and Bethel Woods Center for the Arts (18.4 mile), home to the 1969 Woodstock music festival. 2 gas stations, a liquor store and supermarket are also within 2 miles of the property, as well as local eateries. We recommend bringing inflatables and or kayaks to take advantage of the beautiful river. Guests can drop in a few miles up river, and float down to the campsite. Now our children has taking it over and are raising beef cattle on the property. Our campsite lies on the beautiful two and a half century old LeFevre family farmstead with rich history and stunning views of the Shawangunk Mountain ridge. The property is on a 40-acre old apple orchard that is super private and filled with dramatic views and spectacular sunsets. Wake up in your tent to the sounds of birds chirping, roasters crowing and cows just close enough but just far enough way. On occasion there may be a person driving by to tend to the cattle.

It also makes a great place for an event or a movie night. Today, the original canal towpath, along which barges would be pulled and floated downstream, is a trail that links all of the campsites over 5 acres and at the furthest end an eel fishing camp that is in operation from June to October (say 'hi' to Jim). In the early 1900s, the train replaced the canal as the primary method of moving goods into New York and if you are lucky — you will hear the train rumble by along the river on the Pennsylvania side. There is something spectacular in the absolute still and grandness of the river, the mountains and the ongoing industrial history of the valley. It is a reminder of the way things used to be.

Mountainous camping near Roscoe guide

Overview

Just two hours from New York City, the little hamlet of Roscoe is a haven for anglers. Home of five of America’s top trout streams, Roscoe is fondly known as Trout Town, USA. WIth its historic downtown and access to the Catskills mountains, it’s the perfect place to get away from it all and enjoy outdoor activities including rafting, kayaking, and snowshoeing. Those wishing to set up camp nearby will find lots of options.

Where to go

Delaware Wild Forest

Around a 30-minute drive north of Roscoe, the Delaware Wild Forest is located in the western Catskill Forest Preserve and has more than 47 miles of recreational trails with 28 miles designated as snowmobile trails. There are four lean-to shelters located in the wild forest.

Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River

To the south of Roscoe, the Delaware River offers plenty of recreational opportunities, including boating, fishing, and hiking. There’s also the chance of spotting wintering bald eagles along the river. River users can use the water access-only Pennsylvania State Forest primitive camping area within the Buckhorn Natural Area of Delaware State Forest.

Hudson Highlands

With more than 70 miles of trails, ranging from easy to challenging, spread over 8,000 acres, Hudson Highlands State Park, around an hour and a half south of Roscoe, offers plenty of opportunity for activities with a scenic mountainous backdrop. Campers can spend the night at Fahnestock State Park on the eastern side of the Hudson Highlands.

Big Indian Wilderness

Covering 33,500 acres around an hour northeast of Roscoe, the Big Indian Wilderness Area is home to the longest (30 miles) stretch of trail through uninterrupted virgin forest in the Catskills. There are five lean-tos located trailside throughout the area, as well as other designated campsites. Primitive camping is also allowed.

When to go

With its promise of long, sunny days ideal for enjoying the great outdoors, summer is the most popular time of year to visit Roscoe and the Catskills. However, the season can bring crowded trails and booked-up campsites. September and October are also popular with visitors arriving to see fall foliage. Winters have the appeal of being relatively crowd-free and offer skiing and snowshoeing.
