a largely off-the-grid, truly unique, 420-friendly cabin and YURT in beautiful Livingston Manor. A ‘tiny house’ with every conceivable amenity—full kitchen, hot shower, indoor toilet, woodstove, spacious living room, enormous sleeping loft, speakers for your music, excellent wi-fi—thoughtfully arranged to maximize space and ease of use. The house is at the end of a shale road on a blueberry orchard. Guests are invited to pick all the fruit they like. The hillside’s high elevation provides an oasis of cooler temperatures during every summer heat wave. The panoramic view of the Catskills from the front porch has to be seen to be appreciated.
across the property, smack in the middle of the blueberry bushes, is the latest addition to our eco-getaway: a YURT. It’s a slightly larger tiny house, albeit a round one with walls of cloth instead of wood. Like the cabin, the YURT has a full kitchen, hot shower, indoor toilet, woodstove, etc. If glamping is your thing, come and spend a night or two under the stars while sleeping indoors.
while the setting is delightfully off the beaten path, it’s also a short drive to the cafés, breweries, and eateries in the charming hamlet of Livingston Manor. World class hiking, swimming, camping, and fishing is even closer. (Camping and hiking gear provided.)
perhaps most importantly, our place offers more than a getaway. Guests learn how hygienic a composting toilet is, how easily a spring provides water for one’s home, the joys of heating with wood, etc. A few days on the blueberry patch is both a rewarding glimpse of the sustainable life and an invaluable education in how comfortable a small house can be. If you’re considering procuring your own, spending time in one of ours will help you decide if such a home is right for you.
I was really excited to spend a weekend at this cabin for our anniversary. Unfortunately, we never heard from the host, and every challenge we faced during our stay was made that much more concerning without proper contact or guidance from them.
When we arrived, the roads were unplowed and covered in ice and snow, making it nearly impossible for us to access the property. In our check-in instructions, we were told that we could call the host for assistance with shuttling our belongings to and from the road if conditions were difficult — since we could not get in contact, this wasn’t an option. Once there, we quickly ran out of running water and drinking water, both things that were promised by the host to be refilled if we asked — again, with no contact and no presence from the host, this didn’t happen. On top of everything, we could not leave the property due to get more supplies due to the snowy road conditions, so we finally had to call a tow truck to help get our car back into the nearest plowed road and cut our losses; we left before things got worse with a snow storm on the way.
I’m sure this is a lovely property when things are going right. I’ve read all of the positive reviews and I’m sure Martin is a wonderful host when he’s actually accessible. Unfortunately for my family, we did not feel safe or looked after during our shorter than intended stay. Word of caution to anyone who may be considering visiting in the winter months.
Martin was a very generous host with a beautiful property. We had no trouble finding or accessing his place. The small wood burning stove kept the cabin very warm. We enjoyed the privacy and the views from the porch.
My partner and I stayed at Martin’s tiny house for her birthday and for some stargazing.
The grounds were very private, but not in the middle of nowhere. The view off the porch and from inside the house of the surrounding area was great. We stayed just as the trees were starting to turn, so we woke up to beautiful autumnal views raked with golden light from the rising sun.
The kitchen and other amenities made it an excellent glamping experience. The wood stove kept us very toasty, with more than enough wood to keep it running for our stay.
Martin was an amazing host. Both accommodating and super friendly. The nearby town of Livingston Manor has some great little shops and cafes.
We definitely recommend a stay here, and plan on coming back in the future!
Martin was a solid dude, easy going. The near by towns were cute and there’s some easy but rewarding hikes close by. It was secluded but still easy to get to. We will probably go back in the winter:)
Marty was a very hospitable host. The tiny cabin was awesome (and inspiring). A perfect spot for a winter stay. Will definitely be considering taking a tiny house workshop from him in the future. We were pleasantly surprised and impressed with everything that was available. From the shower, the kitchen, to the wood stove, and the very generous supply of firewood. It was the perfect girls' weekend getaway. Marty was very communicative, willing to offer a helping hand if needed, but also very respectful of our privacy (which was appreciated). Would definitely book again!
