You can stay in the small camping cabin in comfort with your own bedding, or sleeping bag for the twin bed in the loft, or the futon on the main level. The cabin only has room for two adults unless you bring a camp pad to sleep on the floor, or squeeze in a child, but you have the comforts of A/C, Weber grille, small fridge, microwave, and Electricity. Quiet former country farm site, with great wildlife viewing options with walking trails. Only 23 miles to DT St. Cloud and 8 Miles to the Walmart in Princeton for food or supplies. Just a half mile off Hwy 95 and 5 miles from the large Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge, with trails and lots of wildlife. Expect to hear Pheasants cackle in the AM, and see Sandhill Cranes or Geese fly over the camp site, or sitting in area fields. Enjoy time around a campfire with folding chairs and a picknick table with plenty of fallen dead wood to burn.

The cabin is efficiently heated and cooled with a user-friendly heat pump and gets the cabin to your desired temperature very quickly. The first time we walked the acreage was on snowshoes and we spotted a porcupine snacking on a poplar tree. I thought, what a great name, Porcupine Trail. I knew then we were meant to share this with others. Over the years many friends and family have walked these woods saying the same, that we need to share this great spot. Once the City of Thomson, our little community is now Carlton and known as “The Gateway to Jay Cooke State Park”. We just call it home and look forward to sharing it with you. We are located just 20 miles south of Duluth MN nestled between Jay Cooke State Park and the Willard Munger State Trail. Close yet private, this 12x14 wall tent for two is perfect for those who appreciate privacy with the assurance that we're close by just in case. Your tent doors will open to a covered porch and five acres of mixed woods. The off grid tent is something between glamping and roughing it. The site includes a cart to transport your gear and supplies, privy, personal fire ring, picnic table, brick rocket stove and first bundle of firewood. You can bring your own MDA or USDA certified firewood or extra firewood is available for a reasonable cash purchase. Bundle includes wood, kindling and fire-starter. Or gather it on the forest floor for free. Inside your wall tent you'll find simple furnishings; a full size futon with linens, (you may prefer to bring your own pillow) rocker, table, chairs, a few basics for cooking over a campfire or your own camp stove and a wood stove for heat in cooler/cold seasons. There is no electricity or running water so come prepared. Artesian well water is tested every three months and provided for drinking and cooking. This is a ready to hit the woods or stay put campsite for adventurous or contemplative souls. Although welcome and open to anyone, this may not be for everyone. Keep in mind you'll be sharing the woods with a wide variety of wildlife including mice, skunks, coyotes and insects, including ticks and mosquitoes, so bring appropriate repellent and an adventurous soul. Our northern MN woods weather can vary from one day to the next. It’s a good idea to check the forecast and bring appropriate gear. Attractions Close By: A few minutes walk will put you on The Willard Munger State Trail. A short walk to an access trail or drive down the road will put you in Jay Cooke State Park. There you may enjoy 50 miles of historical and recreational trails of all kinds during all seasons. Some are designated for specific activities. An entrance fee applies if driving in. A few minutes drive in the opposite direction you'll see Swiftwater Adventures. Check out their website for offerings and online booking. Or, bring your own kayak, canoe or paddle board and a brief drive brings you to UMD's Kayak and Canoe Center Outpost. A short uphill portage to the access point and you'll be on the 339 acre Thomson Reservoir. A mile and a half away, downtown Carlton has The Street Car Kitchen and Pub, Red Dog drive thru coffee, Magnolia Cafe, Third Base Sports Bar, Carlton Meats and Grocery and a gas station with an ATM. Come and immerse yourself in what the north woods has to offer! A beautiful night sky, bird songs, coyote yips, and even the rumbling sounds and horn of a distant train that says Welcome to Carlton "The Gateway to Jay Cooke State Park". The property offers walking trails throughout our woods with mature trees, an array of birds, flowers, a food forest, wildcraft medicinal herbs, and the Zumbro River for guest enjoyment. Kick Back Tiny Shack

About this space The "Kick Back Tiny Shack" has a queen size bed, small futon bed (for a child) along with two single camp cots. This tiny house can sleep up to four people (2-3 most comfortably) depending on your needs. There is a mini fridge with mini freezer along with a mini gas range/oven, microwave, coffee pot and toaster. There is a TV with only local channels available. Wi-Fi is available at nearby restaurants. AT&T works well here, all others are very sketchy. The cabin has a freestanding gas fireplace to keep you cozy and warm. Come prepared to relax. This is a rustic cabin with all amenities so no need to pack up dishes, bedding, towels, etc. (bring sleeping bag and pillow for anything other than the queen size bed.) The kitchen is fully stocked with your basic cooking and dining essentials. If you don't want to do dishes you are welcome to bring your own paper plates, etc. Coffee, Salt, pepper, dish soap and hand soap, toilet paper and one roll of paper towels provided. There is no running water, but you will be supplied with pump faucet with 5 gallons of water for the kitchen sink for doing dishes, etc. There is also a pump faucet for the outhouse sink. You can heat water on the stove with the camp coffee pot supplied. In addition, drinking water will be supplied also. There is a heated outhouse next to the cabin which has a shower stall in which you can shower with a electric pump shower and fill 5 gallon bucket with solar camp shower bag. Towels will be available and if you need more water, you can contact us, and we can refill at our home which is located next door. The contact information will be provided with your booking confirmation. Please allow notice in case we are not home at the time. You have your own private yard on our 6 acres with a screen tent, BBQ pit, firepit and grill off of the back deck. If you chose to bring a four-wheeler, canoe, boat or snowmobile there is plenty of parking space depending on the quantity. Come and unwind or explore the many wonders that the Northwoods has to offer! AT&T works well but all other cell services are sketchy. Although we are animal lovers, no pets are allowed. No smoking is allowed in the cabin. Ashtrays will be available to you if you would like to smoke outside. Please do not leave cigarette butts anywhere but in the ashtrays or firepit. When using firepit be aware of wind and do not have campfire in extremely windy days/nights. Extinguish fire when not attended. Buckets of water will be available during dry times of the year. Please note that at certain times burning bans may be in effect. Bring bug spray in the spring/summer! Be aware that this is bear country and store your food inside. The interior of the cabin is newly refinished. The exterior will be improved as time goes by. Since the cabin and outhouse were moved to their private spot recently, there is not much grass yet. Please be patient with us as we are new to this, and suggestions are greatly appreciated. This is a private wooded lot. Lakes, rivers and trails are nearby. For those looking for a quiet place, it is mainly a quiet area to listen to the sounds of nature. The cabin is set back but it is located on a main road in which people do travel. You may rarely hear gunshots at times as neighbors may be hunting on their land, etc. Please be considerate to our neighbors. Quiet time is between 10pm to 8am. The Kick Back Tiny Shack is located about 25 miles north of The City of Duluth, about 30 miles from the Miller Hill Mall Area, 25 miles northwest of Two Harbors, 80 miles south of Ely. The Mother Bear Ski Trail is approximately 12 miles north for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. The Pequaywan Area Walking Trail is located approximately 4 miles North. The Skibo Scenic Lookout is located approximately 40 miles away. We have snowshoes available for rent. Please bring your own cross-country skis. Events in Duluth some of which include Grandmas Marathon and Beargrease Sled Dog Race. Beargrease has been cancelled in 2024. Explore thousands of acres of public forest land and endless miles of some of the best recreational trails Minnesota has to offer. There are plenty of outdoor activities surrounding us including: Canoeing, Kayaking, fishing, swimming, rock picking, fall colors, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, four wheeling, snowmobiling, hunting, stargazing and Northern Lights. Hunting is not allowed at your site. Please check local plat maps for public hunting land nearby. We are located approximately 3 miles away from snowmobile trails. Nearby at The Pequaywan Inn bar/restaurant there will soon be snowmobile rentals available. Please call them for details 218-848-2201. There is gas available 24/7 at the Pequaywan Inn. There are many local events at the Pequaywan Inn along with Hugos bar 218-848-2220. Hugos Bar is a set up bar/restaurant and also has a small grocery store and a liquor store, gas, bait and propane.

Where to go

Northwest Minnesota

Bordered by Canada to the north, and South Dakota and the Red River Valley to the west, northwest Minnesota is home to some of the state's biggest lakes. Grand Rapids and Bemidji are the gateways to the Leech Lake Recreation Area and the Chippewa National Forest, while nearby Itasca State Park lies at the headwaters of the Mississippi River. To the north, two Minnesota state parks border the Lake of the Woods, known for its walleye fishing and winter snowmobiling.

Northeast Minnesota

Lush state forests, wetlands, and island-studded lakes blanket the northeastern tip of Minnesota, stretching down from the Canadian border to the north shore of Lake Superior. Minnesota camping is at its wildest out here, whether paddling out to island campsites in Voyageurs National Park, RV camping with full hookups in Superior National Forest, or seeking out a tranquil lake campground in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Central Minnesota

On the banks of the mighty Mississippi River, the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are launchpads for outdoor adventures in central Minnesota. Some of the region's best campgrounds are just a short drive from the city at Mille Lacs Lake, while Frontenac State Park has a mix of drive-in RV sites and cart-in tent sites along the Mississippi. Further north, there's kayak and canoe camping along the St. Croix River at Wild River State Park, or yurt and camper cabin rentals at Afton State Park.

Southern Minnesota

Glacial plains and scenic river valleys give way to the wooded bluffs of the Mississippi River in southern Minnesota. Rochester, Mankato, and Winona provide easy access to the south, where highlights include aptly named Great River Bluffs State Park, Whitewater State Park, and Minneopa State Park, home of Minnesota's tallest waterfall. In the far southwestern corner, Blue Mounds State Park is known for its soaring cliffs—a hotspot for rock climbing—and free-roaming bison.
