Great park to see handy work of the CCC, aside from being a lush and tropical adventure. We were there in the spring, when it was rainy and overcast. The park was green and lively, even the water was covered in either tiny water plants or algae? it was beautiful, whatever it was. Several hiking trails, fishing and camping ( of course). Look out for dinosaurs.... or snakes!

If you go here be sure to check out the Palmetto Interpretive Trail. It's a very short trail but you feel like you're walking through the time of the dinosaurs.

Your guide to camping in Palmetto Campground

Overview

Biking

Biking through the Palmetto trails is a great way to spend the day! There are 8 trails that are all relatively short. But check out a few on your bike and make sure to stop and smell the palmetto plants.

Boating

At Palmetto State Park you can rent four-person pedal boats, three-person canoes, one-person kayaks, one-person paddle boards, and a fishing boat for use on the lake.

Fishing

There is a great fishing pier in the Oxbow Lake right near camp. There is fishing equipment to loan if you don't bring your own.

Hiking

The trails at Palmetto State Park are all relatively flat, making for great walking paths. The trails range from .25 miles to 1.25 miles. The trails are all very well maintained and offer stopping points for enjoying the scenery.

Paddling

Kayaks and canoes are available for rent for day use on the lake.

Swimming

Swimming in the lake is a great way to cool off in the Texas heat! There is a great floating dock in the middle of the lake for splashing around.

Wildlife watching

One of the best parts of Palmetto State Park is that the area resembles the tropics more than Central Texas. The park is filled with dwarf palmettos that surround the park's swamps. Another great thing about Palmetto State Park is that it is located on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail and is a birding hot spot. Birders have observed more than 240 species of birds in the park.
