Burning Coal Vein Campground is named for a natural phenomenon singular to the mystical landscape of North Dakota’s badlands.
For over a hundred years, a smoldering underground coal deposit burned red-hot, and this campground provided a perfect vantage point. The furnace-like vein is now permanently extinguished, but this small, primitive campground still has a lot to offer. Short trails to Ponderosa Pine groves and a scenic lookout point are available, and each site comes equipped with a fire pit to keep you toasty while you count the stars in the big prairie sky.
