Houchin Ferry Campground

12 sites · RV, Tent

Houchin Ferry Campground crosses the bridge between modern America and its endemic wilderness flawlessly.

For example, it's equipped with picnic tables, which are located just a few miles from the electrically-fed confines of the visitor's center. And, this idea of “wild america” is further romanticized by the string of primitive campsites that trail the otherwise undisturbed southern banks of the Green River.

Right near the river, first come first serve sights. Really peaceful listening to frogs, fish, and other noises associated with being at the water.

We had a great stay at this smaller campground with 12 primitive sites. We used it a stop-over on the way to Mammoth Cave as an alternative to the larger main Mammoth Cave Campground. A highlight of the stay was the easy access to the river -- most of the 12 sites at this campground had access to the river. When we visited the river was slow and quiet. This campground is close to civilization, so access is easy. Since the campground is right next to the boat put-in, this is an ideal campground if you are using the put-in. Drinking water is available and there are portable toilets at the campground The sites were all shaded and cool, but not too shady - the morning sun filtering through the leaves made for a great start to the day!

My partner and I stayed at Houchin Ferry Campground with our 2 dogs last fall. This was our first time trying primitive camping together, and we have been hooked ever since. The campsites are spacious with a nice table and grilling station attached. You are also on the water, which is great for fishing. The only downside is that the ferry is closed, so if you don't have a boat, you have to drive all the way around the park to get to the other hiking and fishing sites.
