Welcome to Big Branch Apiary, a 50 acre honey and blueberry farm north of Lake Pontchartrain. We're bounded by the Big Branch Wildlife Reserve to the south and a Rails to Trails bike path on the north. We are 3 miles from Lacombe to the east, 4 miles from Mandeville to the west, about 3 miles from Fountainbleu State Park, and an hour from New Orleans. Most of the farm is a mix of hardwood forest and wetlands. Desert Bayou and East Branch Bayou meander across the property. The farm has deer, foxes, bobcats, owls, fireflies, otters, raccoons, turtles, and, well, about anything common to the wilds of the Gulf South. This includes a litany of snakes, mosquitoes, and deer flies in season. About 8 acres are used to raise poultry, bees and organically farmed blueberries. Overall, the land feels primordial and pristine. We are a designated Monarch Waystation and in the spring and fall see many migrating butterflies. We cultivate a lot of flowers so almost year round you can see butterflies in profusion. We are part of the USDAs Conservation Stewardship Program, concentrating on protecting and increasing habitat for animals and pollinators. Pets are welcome but please leash them. Campfires are allowed except on rare occasions. You can hunt for deadfalls in the woods on the farm, or we can provide firewood for a small fee. Our honey, fresh eggs, and homemade sourdough can be purchased as well. This is a rustic situation: think dry camping, outdoor (heated) shower, and outhouses. We have a tiny treehouse, an A-frame, a glamping tent, and several places to pitch a tent. The farm is pretty secure--someone is on-site most of the time, it's gated, and there are security cameras at access points. But it is a farm in a rural community--you may hear roosters crow, sheep bleat, dogs bark, and the sounds of owls, hawks, coyotes, and other native wildlife. If this sounds like it suits you then come stay and enjoy the farm life.

The description says an acre because it is impossible to put in a smaller number, but the actual parking space is about 25 x 50 ft, with additional hangout space nearby. I am right next door (on the other side of the fence) if you need anything and can help navigate entering and setting up and give you a key to lock the gate with.

We're a non profit community garden in the Old Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, a 15 minute drive or ferry ride to the French Quarter. We use the money from these bookings to fund the community food access work that we do. While you're here you can enjoy our peaceful and spacious garden property, and we encourage you to get to know some of the fantastic neighbors who use our community fridge and herb garden. Take the scenic Mississippi River Levee Path 1 mile to get to the Algiers Ferry dock which departs every 30 minutes and drops you off at the foot of Canal Street in the heart of New Orleans. If you have a car you can cross the bridge and get to most of the city in 15 minutes. You can also explore Algiers Point with its many restaurants, bars, local art and historic buildings. The levee trail is a block away, where you can jog, bike, or just watch the boats go by. Property amenities include an open air bathroom and shower, communal screened porch with seating area, propane grill and various pots/pans, cooking gear and tableware, fridge, picnic tables and a small fire pit. There is an herb garden out front and there may be fruits and vegetables available for you, fresh from the garden, depending on the time of year.

The property is an old homestead recently reclaimed and being brought back to life after many years abandoned. Early 1800s Bulgarian immigrants started a little community here called Stein. The old railroad used to pass through and there are alot of artifacts scattered throughout the property. We are in the process of cleaning up the old cabin built in late 1800s suprisingly still standing. The hardwood forest has a creek running through that is virtually untouched and home to wildlife of all kinds. Birds and wildlife of all kinds have a home here and no hunting allowed. Some trails have been cut and there are some natural trails for exploring the property through the hardwoods and campers are welcome to make new ones. A spring fed pond is great for fishing or just relaxing under the majestic live oaks. If Mushroom foraging is your thing you are in luck after a nice rain. This place had the best of southeast Louisiana and truly is a hidden gem. We are still in the clearing process so there are alot of projects going on but we definitely have some cool spots to pitch a tent. Host is on property in shipping container and willing to make accommodations as needed as we have electricity but are pretty much off the grid.. do not have an outdoor bathroom but could set something up with little effort. Have running water for solar shower or creek bath if you'd rather. Since we are still rebuilding there are some piles of lumber and things that may be unsafe for small children and animals. I have 2 dogs on the property with me but are fenced and friendly. If you have any questions just ask!

Deborah has a great place for a quick overnight. It's very peaceful for a restful night from busy campgrounds. I car-camped, but I made sure I was fully self-sufficient. It was so nice to sit by the water.

The property was beautiful!!! The yurt was extremely spacious and bigger than I had previously thought from the picture. So much care and thought was put into every single thing on the property. It was very enjoyable to explore and walk the trails during the sunrise. Highly recommend.

Excellent experience camping at the farm. Cheri graciously greeted me at arrival to direct me to my spot. Drove past ducks, sheep, and thru a blueberry field to get to a secluded flat spot with three large oaks and a fire pit ready to burn. Toilets, showers, and a picnic table all available for use. Enjoyed a quiet night looking at the stars before natures alarm clock in the morning (roosters!). Very good experience!

Weekend Trip to Pelican Gardens

This piece of campsite in the midst of a gardeb is beautiful as well as comfortable. We camped with a hatch tent attached to our SUV and the campsite was big enough for it. Facilities are clean and you wake up to the sound of birds. Though Mark was not on site during our stay, he was super responsive and helped answer all our questions. Would definitely come back.

We enjoyed our one night stay at the Bayou Peninsula. Deborah was a great communicator and made the experience very easy. We wish we had more time to enjoy the docks and water. We hope to stay agaim when we pass this way.

We really enjoyed our stay at Pelican Gardens! The gardens were beautiful and we felt very at home in our van. The area was safe and about a 25 minute walk to the ferry which was convenient for us. Being from MN, we loved the weather and the enclosed outdoor shower. Would highly recommend!

This resilient state park is located on the beach of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. 2005's Hurricane Katrina destroyed all of Buccaneer's structures, water park, and facilities. Now beautifully restored, it offers premium campsites and a 2,350-foot disc golf course. (Par 3, 18 holes.) The 4.5-acre Buccaneer Bay Waterpark boasts a Wave Pool that generates eight different patterns.

Nearly 8,000 trees were lost along Pirate's Alley Nature Trail to Katrina's ravages. Today, the 1.8-mile self-guided trail offers hikers a look at a variety of indigenous plants and trees. A seasonal activities center offers fun activities for kids. The full-service Sea Dog Galley concession stand serves tasty treats.

Buccaneer's 206 campsites offer full amenities, including sewer. An additional 70 walk-in campsites are set on a grassy field overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. 25 primitive campsites nestled in the back of the Royal Cay camp area offer privacy. Three newly designed bathhouses have hot showers.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Buccaneer State Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer months can be hot and crowded, while winter brings cooler temperatures that might not be ideal for camping or water-based activities.

Buccaneer Campground

We went in off season. It was very quiet. Close to nice places to eat at in waveland. Not that far from casinos if that is what you like.

Another AWESOME place to camp. Everything is within easy driving distance. The bath house are clean as well as the park.
