Quirky accommodation on a 2,500-acre nature-filled estate, just 15 minutes from Stonehenge

Discovering Kingsettle Stud delivers a tingle down the spine. It’s the same feeling a metal detectorist gets when unearthing treasure or by anyone lucky enough to catch sunrise at Stonehenge. It’s something akin to the excitement of discovering a secret walled garden, spotting a barn owl or seeing a peacock strutting its stuff. All these things happen around Kingsettle Stud, which sits in the organic 2,500-acre Cholderton Estate in Hampshire, a 15-minute drive down the road from the famous henge. Nature is in control here and the effects are magical.

With space for just three couples or families, Kingsettle Stud is a tiny glamping site on a big, private estate that’s rarely been glimpsed by the public – until now. This vast farmland, grazed by 1,000 cattle and 100 horses, is abuzz with birds, bees and butterflies. It’s been ecologically and organically farmed for upwards of 30 years, since long before 'rewilding' was a thing. It’s potentially a vision of the future of how estates could look, as well as a glimpse of the glorious past. You see that in the buildings, the Victorian walled kitchen garden and maze but more so in the landscape itself. It’s an extension of the Salisbury Plains and there are ancient earthworks in the fields; age-old trackways and Roman roads everywhere. The treasure most-recently found was a hoard of bronze axe heads, now on display at Andover Museum.

There’s just one shepherd’s hut and one cabin here. Both are self-contained, with simple cooking facilities and en suites, and each has a seating space outside with room for a campfire. They sit in a meadow just a short mown path away from the Victorian former stable and courtyard where weddings take place (though not while glampers are staying). The groom’s quarters next to the stables are now a comfortable Coach House Cottage too – it's not glamping, but it’s too quirky to fall into the ordinary 'self-catering cottage' category.

The birds and the bees, the farm animals, the gardens, grounds and location so near to Stonehenge make this place popular with couples and young families. It’s not been open long and, so far, many have used it as a stopover on the way to Cornwall. It’s well located for that, but this is a destination in its own right; a treasure we're thrilled to have detected. And once you arrive, slow down and fall into the pace of Kingsettle Stud life, you'll be glad you didn't drive any further.

We came for a family birthday getaway at the end of Feb. The hut is private but there is a two person hut reasonably nearby. The Shephards hut has everything you need outside and in, regardless of weather. We had moments eating out in the sun, then a brief hail shower and rainbow in the hot tub. One night was so clear we spent the evening star gazing from the hot tub. There is a farm and wild bird sanctuary nearby so an abundance of wild life throughout the day. Kites, peacocks, buzzards, peasants, deer etc. We did several local walks but the best for the kids was the farm > wood walk, which had a hidden wood swing too. The hosts were quick to help when we needed it and the location was very picturesque. It was a perfect birthday escape. We'd love to come back and see it in the summer!

Cozy and peaceful
Cozy and peaceful stay for a family of 4. A lovely welcome hamper for our arrival with essentials; marshmellows, a loaf of bread, butter jams, milk tea and coffee. Bed super comfy, view perfect and the hottub was a great treat for us all! We even found a home made bow on tbe porch which created great entertainment with the kids to collect stick arrows and test them out! We took a walk through the woods and along a lane to the closest pub and had a lovely lunch here. Highly recommend for a peaceful family stay.

The Cholderton Estate is a 2500 acre organic and family-owned farm, just a 10-minute drive from the UNESCO world-heritage site of Stonehenge in Wiltshire. Each of our accommodation options; The Coach House, Lapwing Hut or Bustard Cabin is characterful and unique, and offers the chance to connect with nature and the ancient landscape of Stonehenge. The self-catered cottage and cabins each have a private en-suite kitchen and bathroom, fire-pit and wood-fired hot tub, all overlooking a secluded wildflower meadow. Aside from all that the wider area has to offer, The Cholderton Estate has extensive grounds and gardens, biking trails, a farm shop and beautiful pub walks right on the doorstep. As an organic Estate, in the process of re-wilding, we are also lucky to host a huge diversity of wildlife; all making us a destination in our own right.
Nearby attractions

The Cholderton Estate, on which this glamping site is situated, has extensive grounds and gardens which guests are welcome to explore. There are footpaths and bike trails, plus tennis courts you can use. Cholderton lies within the Test Valley, an area popular for anglers, walkers, horse riders and cyclists. Stockbridge (10 miles away) is a lovely village and a good place to access the riverside is at Stockbridge Common. The area is rich with ancient history and even a walk around the grounds takes you past 5,000-year-old earthworks and burial mounds. Stonehenge (0370 333 1181) is just eight miles from site (and a very easy, 15-minute drive along the A303) and Avebury Henge is 25 miles away. Salisbury (11 miles away), historic Winchester and the New Forest National Park (both about 25 miles away) are all with half an hour's driving distance too, and make for easy day trips from Cholderton.

Food and drink

A welcome hamper supplies you with a few basics on arrival and there’s a farm shop and café within the estate, just a five-minute walk away. For a longer walk with a reward at the end, enjoy a 40-minute stroll through the estate to The Malet Arms (01980 629279). It’s a traditional pub with a roaring fire in winter, kitchen garden and locally-sourced menu that comes highly recommended. The Red Lion (01980 671124) in East Chisenbury is worth the 12-mile drive if you’re a foodie, likewise The Greyhound on the Test (01264 810833) 10 miles from site in Stockbridge. This riverside town is also a great place for delis, coffees and light lunches.
