Binghi Station, once a large sheep station, was a thriving tin and gem mine from the late 1800 to mid 1900. Set on 4,000 acres of natural granite rock country and untouched overgrowth of lush tea tree bushlands, the sheer beauty of the land will, without a doubt, leave you breathless of its raw natural beauty. Binghi Station surrendered to the ravaging bush fires of 2019, however, after this devastation came some much needed rainfall which brought hope; the creation of new life in the form of rich, vibrant green country not seen since the 1980’s. You can explore endlessly on this raw outback property. Discover secret hideouts, come and enjoy a swim under our flowing waterfall (for those brave enough to during the winter months!) and simply relax and soak in pure wildlife beneath a million stars in the night sky. Binghi Station is designed for the 4x4 enthusiasts. In other words we strongly recommend access by 4WD only as the entry 6klm driveway is very rugged and bumpy in most places due to heavy rain fall past 12 months. Please ask for more details if necessary should you have any concerns based on your equipment. Its an ongoing maintenance. Its the 4x4 adventure. We would rather talk it down than up:-) Currently we do not recommend SUV AWD type cars due to there lower profile and vulnerability to bumps and ruts. It is doable many do it all however about driver confidence and add another upto 2hours to trip :-) We recommend parking up the top driveway and having a preplanned lift down. BE WARNED The driveway and some tracks are rough suited for 4x4 adventure enthusiasts that like to use there pride and joy offroad gear for what its intended. ps One thing we can say you will never get bogged on our driveway no matter the rain fall as its very compacted despite its authentic rough character. The Secret Gorge site is suited to tents, camper trailers and smaller length caravans. All our other site locations are suited to off-road 4WD caravans and camper trailers. Binghi Station - an extraordinary place to make some truly wonderful family memories. :-)

This is a grazing property where you can obseve sheep, cattle, and roos, and if you are lucky a few emus. In the little dams and ponds they drink from you often see ducks and other waterfowl. Gullies with ankle-deep spring-fed seasonal creeks. Are scattered thoughout the property. Pleasant to walk along, many accessed by walking or 4wd track only. Trail bikes or pushbikes welcome. There are great areas to hike, explore, and birdwatch. There is no light pollution so you see the amazing display of stars at night. At the top of each hill is a pleasant view. Nice photos to show off on fb or instagram. Campfires permitted, please make sure you put them out when not attended. Water container top-up, shower, and toilet shed available And a power point to charge phone. No internet. But if you must contact someone, do see us at the house. Camping site is located in 41 acres of natural bush land, the perfect get away for nature lovers, hikers, horse riders and bird watchers. There is a dam and a forested area studded with granite boulders. The property is in an an elevated spot, it has lovely views and great places to camp and there's a lovely yielding atmosphere of peace and tranquility. There are accessible walking trails through the property with several areas of slightly sloping ground. We are a ten minute drive from Girraween National park, a popular haunt for hikers and bird and nature lovers in general. Ballandean winery and the Ballandean pub is also close, it serves affordable and wholesome dinners and there is a shop and a cafe as well as a restaurant there. The town of Jennings is a small, quirky town close to the border, with a population of about 150. Jennings is in two time zones, both QLD and NSW! There are many popular wineries in the region, three of which have wonderful restaurant meals. 13 minutes drive going south, is the much-loved federation town of Tenterfield - with appealing cafes, clothes shops, country outfitters, the famous Tenterfield Saddlery and a cinema which seats about 50, a railway museum, a stylish yet friendly Commercial Hotel for eating out and a historic café where federation was called into being by Henry Parkes. There are occasional Saturday morning markets too. A fun place to hang out! No motorbikes or hunting please. This land is for wildlife and supports wallabies, kangaroos and a variety of birds. On walks around the property you can spot various delicate purple, white, yellow and rust coloured flowers.

"Mckenzie Glen" and offers a private camping experience for families and their dogs. The camp allows for self contained tent campers and caravans, camp trailers or RVs. We only allow 1 group at a time, so there will never be any other guests on the property whilst you are there. So once it is booked, the place is entirely yours. For example, if 3 families would like trip away with the kids, it will be exclusive to your group. There is a plentiful supply of firewood around the block that can be collected, if there isn't a load already near the fire. A load of wood is normally replenished once a month and left next to the firepit. There is very limited mobile phone reception along Eukey Road and it is almost non-existent at the camp. Which is great if you want a digital detox! However, there is a way you can still be connected and these details can be provided upon request. There is no toilet... yet. We do sometimes dig a drop toilet but this is not available all the time and it moves frequently. There is a small post hole digger with a bottomless bucket toilet (more affectionately called "Chainsaw") set that you can dig a hole for a toilet and a cage that gives some privacy (see the photos). But please make sure you fill it in with your finished and all the toilet paper is buried at least a foot under the ground. It gets it name from the rodeo bull "Chainsaw" because if you dig the hole too wide and can last 8 seconds on the seat, you're a legend! SO good tip for campers if you want to use it. A favourite thing to do at the camp is to have sundowners on what we call the "Zen Rock". It is a large rock formation about 100m the east of the camp. You can't miss it. There is an incredible amount of bird life around and a family of magpies live in trees just near the camp kitchen (they are friendly). You will often be woken by the Kookaburras and see the gorgeous Rosella's cruising around picking at grass seed. McKenzie Glen provides a swag deck that is large enough for 2 double swags side by side. There is a fully fitted camp kitchen which includes a gas stove. Our point of difference is that for a family who can’t afford all the kitchen camping equipment etc - you will have 'most' of the luxury's of home. You will need an esky for your food and drinks. There is no power, however the kitchen has a small fixed 12 volt system that will run the small pump for the kitchen and the lights. You'll see the switches. There may also be some cattle on the property, they are agisted by my lovely neighbours. They are usually weaners or cows and calves. McKenzie Glen - Granite & Eucalypt Camp is a stones throw of the Girraween National Park, a number of Granite Belt wineries and it is not too far down the road is Storm King Dam where (now that its full) is great for fishing and kayaking and boating. The area used to be mined for Tin. Keep any eye out for lumps of granite rocks on the ground and if your lucky enough you might find some with flicks of tin. If you hold the rock up to the light you can see the fecks shine in the light. If you are a coffee lover like me, there is St. Jude's Cafe down the road on the New England Highway at Ballandean. I highly recommend popping over to Ballandean Estate Wines on Sundowner Road, they've been making wine since 1932. The smell of the food coming from their Barrel Room Restaurant will draw you in even if you're not hungry (you can book a table on line so you don't miss out). And if you like a good country pub meal and a cold beer, then the Ballandean Tavern is the go. Both St. Judes and the Ballandean Tavern are only 8.8km from the camp. To the North of the camp, this bushland is a declared bushfire zone. To stay aware of radio broadcasts, the local ABC channels are 104.9 (ABC radio) 103.3 (Triple J).

Cold and can be wet and windy in winter so rug up and be prepared. Bush camp accessed by steep 2WD vehicle driveway. There are rock outcrops and granite slabs around campsite. Property is on the edge of Girraween National Park and 6kms from the park headquarters by road. Local wineries such as Pyramids Road, Balancing Heart Symphony Hill are close by. Private camping area for vehicles and associated light camper trailers or tents. Caravans, larger camper trailers and Campervans are unsuitable unless car is 4WD with low.range required for heavier units. Campsite has a composting toilet and hot water shower with lights on movement sensors. Dogs are OK as long as they are controlled and remain, tied up if necessary, within the cleared camping area. Firewood is provided or can be collected nearby. A fire pit is established and is the only location for open fires.

We have 3 camp sites to choose from depending on your needs, with plenty of space in between to allow you to have a peaceful and relaxing stay. Branch Creek forms the southern boundary of the property while Tenterfield Creek is the western boundary. The property has a number of granite ridges. There are many popular wineries in the region, while Tenterfield has some great cafes and pubs, excellent shopping and is home to the Tenterfield saddler. For nature lovers and bushwalkers, Boonoo Boonoo and Bald Rock National Parks are a short drive up Mt Lindesay Road. Camping areas are accessible by a normal sedan type vehicle. We want our property to provide a peaceful retreat for those using it: - no hunting, motorbikes or 4WDing permitted. We are an off grid location so campers will need to bring their own shower/toilet/water and take all rubbish out when leaving. The property is located just 5 mins from the town of Stanthorpe known for its chilly temperatures, apple orchards and wineries. "Mckenzie Glen" and offers a private camping experience for families and their dogs. The camp allows for self contained tent campers and caravans, camp trailers or RVs. We only allow 1 group at a time, so there will never be any other guests on the property whilst you are there. So once it is booked, the place is entirely yours. For example, if 3 families would like trip away with the kids, it will be exclusive to your group. There is a plentiful supply of firewood around the block that can be collected, if there isn't a load already near the fire. A load of wood is normally replenished once a month and left next to the firepit. There is very limited mobile phone reception along Eukey Road and it is almost non-existent at the camp. Which is great if you want a digital detox! However, there is a way you can still be connected and these details can be provided upon request. There is no toilet... yet. We do sometimes dig a drop toilet but this is not available all the time and it moves frequently. There is a small post hole digger with a bottomless bucket toilet (more affectionately called "Chainsaw") set that you can dig a hole for a toilet and a cage that gives some privacy (see the photos). But please make sure you fill it in with your finished and all the toilet paper is buried at least a foot under the ground. It gets it name from the rodeo bull "Chainsaw" because if you dig the hole too wide and can last 8 seconds on the seat, you're a legend! SO good tip for campers if you want to use it. A favourite thing to do at the camp is to have sundowners on what we call the "Zen Rock". It is a large rock formation about 100m the east of the camp. You can't miss it. There is an incredible amount of bird life around and a family of magpies live in trees just near the camp kitchen (they are friendly). You will often be woken by the Kookaburras and see the gorgeous Rosella's cruising around picking at grass seed. McKenzie Glen provides a swag deck that is large enough for 2 double swags side by side. There is a fully fitted camp kitchen which includes a gas stove. Our point of difference is that for a family who can’t afford all the kitchen camping equipment etc - you will have 'most' of the luxury's of home. You will need an esky for your food and drinks. There is no power, however the kitchen has a small fixed 12 volt system that will run the small pump for the kitchen and the lights. You'll see the switches. There may also be some cattle on the property, they are agisted by my lovely neighbours. They are usually weaners or cows and calves. McKenzie Glen - Granite & Eucalypt Camp is a stones throw of the Girraween National Park, a number of Granite Belt wineries and it is not too far down the road is Storm King Dam where (now that its full) is great for fishing and kayaking and boating. The area used to be mined for Tin. Keep any eye out for lumps of granite rocks on the ground and if your lucky enough you might find some with flicks of tin. If you hold the rock up to the light you can see the fecks shine in the light. If you are a coffee lover like me, there is St. Jude's Cafe down the road on the New England Highway at Ballandean. I highly recommend popping over to Ballandean Estate Wines on Sundowner Road, they've been making wine since 1932. The smell of the food coming from their Barrel Room Restaurant will draw you in even if you're not hungry (you can book a table on line so you don't miss out). And if you like a good country pub meal and a cold beer, then the Ballandean Tavern is the go. Both St. Judes and the Ballandean Tavern are only 8.8km from the camp. To the North of the camp, this bushland is a declared bushfire zone. To stay aware of radio broadcasts, the local ABC channels are 104.9 (ABC radio) 103.3 (Triple J).

Great views to rock domes in Girraween and Bald Rock NPs and spectacular sunsets from large rock slab expanse through a set of gates adjacent to the campsite. Cold and can be wet and windy in winter so rug up and be prepared. Bush camp accessed by steep 2WD vehicle driveway. There are rock outcrops and granite slabs around campsite. Property is on the edge of Girraween National Park and 6kms from the park headquarters by road. Local wineries such as Pyramids Road, Balancing Heart Symphony Hill are close by. Private camping area for vehicles and associated light camper trailers or tents. Caravans, larger camper trailers and Campervans are unsuitable unless car is 4WD with low.range required for heavier units. Campsite has a composting toilet and hot water shower with lights on movement sensors. Dogs are OK as long as they are controlled and remain, tied up if necessary, within the cleared camping area. Firewood is provided or can be collected nearby. A fire pit is established and is the only location for open fires.

We have 3 camp sites to choose from depending on your needs, with plenty of space in between to allow you to have a peaceful and relaxing stay. One booking per site allowed so you have the entire area to yourself (and your camp pals) and you are not tripping over the next campers tent pegs. Branch Creek forms the southern boundary of the property while Tenterfield Creek is the western boundary. The property has a number of granite ridges. There are many popular wineries in the region, while Tenterfield has some great cafes and pubs, excellent shopping and is home to the Tenterfield saddler. For nature lovers and bushwalkers, Boonoo Boonoo and Bald Rock National Parks are a short drive up Mt Lindesay Road. Camping areas are accessible by a normal sedan type vehicle. We want our property to provide a peaceful retreat for those using it: - no hunting, motorbikes or 4WDing permitted. We are an off grid location so campers will need to bring their own shower/toilet/water and take all rubbish out when leaving. Beautiful camo spot! We were welcomed by Ben who was super friendly and helpful! On arrival we told us our camping spot wasn’t next to the river and asked if we wanted to change, which u thought was very nice to offer. Toilet and kitchen areas were well equipped, spotless and in very good condition. The view of the lake was spectacular, as was the little walk to the water fall where you can see streams and rock pools. It was everything we wanted in a campsite! Would definitely go back. they are definitely not kidding about the road in but worth every second of the drive. Amazing views and swimming, flat cleared camping areas with plenty of firewood, plenty of wildlife. a few nice touches with the solar lights, fire pits and even rakes and shovels provided around the area. Adrian was a great bloke to meet for a chat. Will definitely be back 10/10.

We were lucky enough to arrive just after some pretty severe storms went through & were the only ones there. We had the entire 4,000 acres to ourselves! We took our electric mountain bikes & loved riding or walking to Sandy Falls, or even Secret Gorge, which was a little more challenging. Jump’n Rock is about 1/2 an hour by 4WD & absolutely worth the effort. All three sites are absolutely spectacular! Plenty of good camp sites at Shearing Shed Campground but as Adrian says, be prepared as none of them are level. We were OK as we have airbag suspension. Adrian, Oratai & their 5 year old twins were perfect hosts & couldn’t do enough for us. Such a lovely family, they deserve to do well. Worth mentioning the track in. Adrian is careful to state that the track is 4WD only & be aware that whatever you are towing needs plenty of ground clearance also. We have a Ford Ranger & towed a 20’ extreme off road van. The track is very well compacted, so we were never going to get bogged but some of the hills were quite rutted & rocky & we had our hearts in our mouths on the way out, with all 4 wheels spinning! Adrian tells me he has a D6 bulldozer booked in the next month or so, so that should make a huge difference. All in all, we just loved our experience at Binghi Station. Highly recommended!

The best camping in Sundown National Park, QLD guide

Overview

About

West of Brisbane, just on the northern side of the Queensland–New South Wales border, Sundown National Park is a rugged area of steep river gorges and forest. Hiking trails and four-wheel-drive tracks allow visitors to explore the beautiful landscape and to spot woodland birds throughout the park. Unpowered camping is available at several campgrounds throughout the park, a couple of which can be accessible by regular vehicle while the rest can only be reached by four-wheel-drive. Wild bush camping is also permitted in this park, but camping permits are still required.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for caravans and RVs: The accessible Broadwater Camping Area is beside a large permanent waterhole that attracts wildlife.
  • Best for a remote experience: Sundown Remote Camp has walk-in and four-wheel-drive access only.
  • Best for views: Nundubbermere Falls Camping Area is high on a ridge overlooking the falls.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Booking and pre-paying is required for all camping stays within the park. This can be done online up to 12 months in advance.
  2. Bookings can be made via the Queensland National Parks website, over the phone, or in person at various information centres and booking offices throughout Queensland.

When to go

Most campers will find late-autumn to early-spring (April to September) the most comfortable time of year to visit Sundown. The climate of Southern Queensland is subtropical and can get very hot in summer. Note that night temperatures can be quite cold in the cooler months, even when it’s warm by day, so come prepared with warm sleeping gear and clothes.

Know before you go

  • As parts of this park were previously used for mining, access to certain areas is prohibited, so heed safety warnings and don’t cross barriers.
  • Bring your own drinking water when camping in Sundown, as other supplies can’t be guaranteed.
  • If you want to make a campfire or use barbeque facilities (when fire restrictions allow), bring your own firewood as this is not supplied and you’re not allowed to gather wood from the bush.
  • There are no powered sites within this national park.
