4WD Spirit Ranch is comprised of 35 acres of isolation in the lush green aspen forest, above the sage and juniper at 8800’. Somewhat hard to get to, up a bumpy road, it’s very private, quiet and green. Within 45 minutes to the city of Montrose, a day trip to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Ouray, the Cimarron's and the San Juan's. Spirit Ranch’s seclusion gives you respite from civilization. Soak in the peace. To access the property, you need some clearance, AWD or 4WD is recommended (something like a RAV4 or better). Larger vehicles will probably touch some soft branches along the way. After a big rain, the road can be muddy and slick. Not a serious jeep trail, but definitely “off roady”. The last 1.4 miles is through a locked gate through private property. Camp host is only there 25% of the time, with only two sites, you are not likely to see anyone else. Each campsite is marked, has a fire ring and flat spots for tents. There is plenty of dead aspen to burn. One composting porta potty serves both sites. You will need to bring your own water and leave with your garbage. There is decent cell phone reception (Verizon), but with towers on top of Waterdog Mtn, other providers are likely. Foot traffic to the top of Waterdog, from near the locked gate, is totally tolerated despite the signs. Blessed with the state’s finest top soil, it’s lush in a way most of the west can’t provide. A great place to play with a plant identification app, foragers will be thrilled with the amount of edible plants. Feel free to explore our 35 acres (property boundaries are not marked, the OnX app works great and comes with a free trial, our property is currently labeled as “Dionne”). Responsible firearm target practice is allowed. Wildlife is abundant. You’ll hear coyotes, see the scratches and tracks from mountain lions, scat and tracks from bear, elk, deer and free range cattle. Be careful with your pets.

NEED 4WD HIGH CLEARANCE VEHICLE
The site is beautiful. However, it is not accessible by all 2WD vehicles, and there should be a very explicit warning that you need high clearance to make it to the site. Some of our vehicles received damage to tires and undercarriages trying to reach the site. Additionally, the instructions for getting from the main road to the campsite should be much clearer, and possibly include images or a pdf map to help. I wouldn’t recommend this campsite with the way this posting is now.

Very nice spot! Not quite as much distance in between camp sites, but over was private and beautiful. Dogs loved it!

Wonderful site, difficult road
The campsite itself is excellent, plenty of space with great views of the mountains and stars, and it surprisingly has cell service. But the road to get there is best suited for high clearance vehicles or drivers who are comfortable navigating rough, rocky terrain. One member of the group took a hour to drive it one way, and another member punctured their tire on it. Low clearance vehicles can make it but are almost guaranteed to scrape the bottom against rocks.

Beauty at its best!
20 ft pop-up camper · With kids ·
Getting to the site from the main road is just as amazing as the site itself. I would recommend a rugged vehicle. We had a truck at stock height. We were able to bring our overland camped along with us. Words will never be able to describe the amount of beauty at the site. The hosts were responsive to our issue at arrival. The issue was our fault. The directions from the main road are perfect. Just follow them to a “T”. The road is a bit on the rough side, but a capable vehicle and patient driver will have no issues, just take a bit of time. About 45 min for use.

Perfect night!

Awesome space away from it all. Dog ran free, so did the kids, and us for that matter. Stars legit and perfectly quiet. Road isn’t as bad as advertised! Go get away!
