Great if you are okay with primitive camping. The sunrise is absolutely awesome to watch from the hill on the west side of the site, it comes right up over the Badlands. Nothing quite like it.
Make sure you bring plenty of water and watch out for rattlesnakes!
Primitive campground on the backside of the park, so you must drive an hr to get to the trails
It was a great stop during our Route 66 trip.
Hard to find at night... book and arrive early!
Drove into this primitive campground after adventuring around the incredible town of Wall, South Dakota (Wall Drug and its jackalopes are a must see if you feel like being tacky and touristy!) We arrived late at night, but still found plenty of room to pitch a tent. The quietness of our neighbors added an air of respect for each other and the wilderness we were surrounded by. We were delighted to hear howling coyotes in the middle of the night and to be woken up by a dazzling sunrise. A curious bison wandered close and chirps from the prairie dogs who set up camp a couple feet away served as an adorable alarm clock! Free camping will always get a 10/10 in my book.
visited in early june. be sure you bring a tarp with you! there are sun shelters but that hot hot sun can peek through still. wrap the tarp over the back and will also help with the 40 mph winds that come barreling in. bison graze super close by dont wont bother you if you dont bother them.
Here in September, and what a phenomenal place. We had Bison grazing right next to our teardrop trailer. It was a very hot day, but cool at night. Despite it being midweek the campground filled up by evening. Recommend getting there before 2:00 pm. All the othe campers were super nice. It was like a unique community. Camping was free. Very nice vault toilets but bring in water. No campfires. The bison trails make for good hiking, but don't get lost.
