No food is provided you must bring your own, don't forget your coffee, there is a coffee pot but not coffee. No toiletries are provided. Site is 10 minutes from Stephenville, 3 miles from County Store in Huckabay. Linens, towels provided. Board games are available if requested, Wii, ping-pong table, outdoor games, trampoline on site. Land owners located across lake and may be on lake or available as needed. GPS should get you here. You will go past Little Off Ranch house, follow road to lake house. Keys will be left out on porch on arrival day. Wi-Fi is now available but no cable television. TV is available to use for Wii or DVD/VHS. Large collection of movies available. Pets are welcome as long as they don’t damage home, chase cows, kill chickens or are dangerous to others. There is an extra fee for pets. There is a beach at the main camp that provides easy in and out of the water. the water depth varies with the rainfall but is usually between 2-4 feet deep.

The Brazos Electric Power Plant is located on the lake. The power plant helps to keep the water warmer during the winter months keeping the fishing better in that area where an 83-pound Flathead Catfish was known to be caught. Lake Palo Pinto RV Park is just 14 minutes to Palo Pinto, 25 minutes to Mineral Wells, and about an hour from Fort Worth. It is north of I-20 about 10 miles. Nearby points of interest include Clark Gardens Botanical Park, Holiday Hills Country Club, Mineral Well Fossil Park, The National Vietnam War Museum. Take The Baker Hotel ghost walk tour, where you can learn about the historical significance of the hotel, its ghostly inhabitants, and the history of the City of Mineral Wells. Downtown Mineral Wells is home to more than 20 murals featuring everything from flying pigs to human-sized butterflies and interactive murals to portrayals of local people from days gone past. Downtown Mineral Wells has over 100 historic buildings with boutiques, antique shops, and specialty stores, plus restaurants that offer patio dining and live music. Mineral Wells was named for and is still famous for its mineral waters. The town boomed as a health resort after 1885, when the Crazy Well was dug. The Crazy Water Bath House offers mineral baths and treatments inspired by the waters and nature. Three museums call Mineral Wells their home. The National Vietnam War Museum has dozens of silent memorials recognizing those who served their country in the Vietnam War. This museum exhibits a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., the Camp Holloway Memorial Wall, a Meditation Garden, and a Huey Helicopter. The Old Jail Museum is a growing complex of historic log cabins and frontier buildings that demonstrate life in the region’s 19th century. Local artifacts fill all of its buildings. The Little Rock Schoolhouse Museum, built in 1884, housed the first public school building in Mineral Wells, and is dedicated to the preservation of the historical memorabilia of the City of Mineral Wells. The W.K. Gordon Center for Industrial History preserves, documents, and researches the industrial history of Thurber, Texas, which was once a thriving coal mining company town of 10,000 people and now a ghost town. Thurber was located near the southern Palo Pinto County line. Visitors can see reconstructions of Thurber’s mercantile store, livery stable, the town bandstand, the 655-seat opera house, and the Snake Saloon, which once boasted one of the largest horseshoe-shaped bars in the United States. The Mineral Wells Fossil Park at the old City of Mineral Wells landfill’s borrow pit, which closed in the early 1990s but then revealed fossils documenting ancient sea species such as crinoids, echinoids, and other historic sea life from the Pennsylvania Period over 300 million years ago. Fossil collecting is allowed in designated areas only, and only surface collecting is allowed with small gardening tools at the park. Take a guided tour of Guest Ranch Exotic Game Hunting where you will see their different species of antelope, buffalo, deer, and sheep. The best times to go on this tour are early mornings and late afternoons, and the cost of the tours begin at $35.00. Check out the Palo Pinto Mountain State Park that comprises 4,871 acres of former ranch land about 23 miles west of Palo Pinto Creek Reservoir. When fully developed, this park will offer hiking, camping, fishing, stargazing, and other outdoor activities. Plateaus with beautiful vistas overlook sheltered canyons. Palo Pinto Creek winds through the northern border of the park. A dam on Russell Creek impounds the 90-acre Tucker Lake, the centerpiece of the park. Plans for the park include an extensive network of multi-use trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Trails will lead to remote areas of the park with expansive vistas.

The whole property is great to get away from everything. It was our first time camping with a travel trailer and Top of dam was a great location. Plenty of room, great scenery. We rode bikes on all the trails and all the sites were secluded and roomy. It was cold and windy but we made the most of it. We are planning on returning with a bigger group to enjoy it again and utilize more of the amenities.

Weekend Trip to Creekside Brazos Rock Camp & Kayak

Don’t be put off by the bumpy road to the property. It’s a lovely riverside (creekside ) location. It was quiet, and we were provided with water, sewer hookup and 30 amp electric. We had some questions and they were answered promptly. Great place for star gazing. We heard owls at night and lots of birdlife during the day. Possibly coyotes or foxes at night down by the creek. 😊. We spent a few hours at the nearby Mineral Springs Fossil Park and found some great fossils! Worth the trip. We are traveling from Maine to California and this campsite was a nice spot to relax for a few days. It’s rural but worth the effort to get there.

1 night at Gypsy Moon Hideaway

Had a wonderful last minute visit camping with my two dogs and cat. The location was easy to get to and on site directions were straightforward and accurate. Conveniently located about 30mins outside of Weatherford. Hosts were friendly and helpful. All the primitive sites were labeled and each has a picnic table and fire ring. Sites are spaced out similar to what you would see at a state park. We stayed at “the point” right on the river bank. It was beautiful and had access to the water. I saw another review about neighbors lights and dogs bark; I am going to assume they stayed in the same site as us because it’s the farthest back on Gypsy moon also making it the closest to the neighboring rv park. I did notice the lights but you could easily reposition to avoid them and the dogs barked when we first got there and were setting up but then settled. Neither bothered us nor are these things in control of the hosts. Shower and bathroom in good working condition. Lots of chickens, geese and goats out near the rvs but none wandered over to primitive camping. Didn’t go in or inquire about bait shop so nothing to review but did see firewood for sale. Overall very good value for the price and I will gladly return if I’m in the area again.

Cool place to visit and loved the history. We would love to see some of the old cabins from the 20’s restored. Place needs a little TLC but still super fun to visit and Phillip was extremely nice as well as Johnny. Will be back in the Spring.

We loved tent camping on Amy's land! Everyone very kind and the area is beautiful and relaxing we had a wonderful time fishing and just being outdoors in nature. It reminded me of childhood spent on my grandparents farm. With all the goats, chickens and ducks etc.

Amy's place is always a welcome reprieve from the world. Situated on a nice piece of property along the river, it is a very chill vibe. If you are tent camping, I recommend the Far Far Away site. This is my second time here, and it's apparent that continued improvements have been made. She did have to shut down the honor system store because.... well, people suck. And I hate that for Amy, because she is such a sweet lady. But I understand the decision. If you come here, please be kind, respectful, and pick up any trash you see from previous campers.

My wife and I, along with a friend and two dogs stayed here for 4 nights and absolutely loved it! We stayed in a class b camper at the site closest to one of the cabins. Full electric hookups, fresh water, and black/gray water dump area. Johnnie was very pleasant to communicate with and he was also quick to respond to messages. If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway with beautiful views and lots of exploring I would definitely recommend this place!

I enjoyed this campsite! Directly on top of a ridge where if you walk down the ridge and a few steps to the right you are on the old zoo trail. Some things I learned: No service for me (Verizon user) unless I was on the dam (which I enjoyed being away from) The guy who watches the camp is very helpful and kind and his dogs a gentle giant. Loved Thor and so did my small dog. The site is more rock than dirt so I couldn’t stake my tent in the ground and it did get pretty windy on the ridge one night for us (be strategic with car parking + trees around you and put rocks in my tent to help. There are toilets at the zoo trailhead so if you don’t mind walking a little you can use a toilet while tent camping. 1-2 nights max is what I’d recommend! The zoo trail is smaller so that + some paddle boarding on the lake maxed my time out. Any more nights and I’d be spending time outside the site/trail.

About

This popular state park just an hour west of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area centers on the clear, blue waters of Possum Kingdom Lake, with its 300 miles of shoreline. While the on-land activity menu includes hiking, biking, picnicking, and geocaching, the real appeal is the water. Fish for largemouth, striped, or white bass from a boat or fishing pier, or beat the Texas heat with some swimming or water skiing. Scuba divers will find one of the state’s oldest inland diving destinations—a popular spot for scavenging items dropped in the water.

Notable campgrounds

Best for fishing: The Spanish Oaks Campground has a fishing pier and fish cleaning station.
Best for boating: You’ll find the park’s boat ramp near the Lakeview Camping Area.
Best for families: The Chaparral Trail Camping Area has a playground and lake access, perfect for families with kids.

Tips for snagging a campsite

You can reserve any of the 29 electricity sites, 53 campsites with water, or 10 primitive, walk-in campsites on the Texas State Parks website.
You can book sites up to five months in advance. Book early for weekend trips, especially during summer.

When to go

Possum Kingdom State Park is a popular spot to cool off during the hot Texas summers, particularly on weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Come in the fall or spring months to take advantage of cooler temperatures for hiking and biking. Many campsites close during the winter months.

Know before you go

Public consumption of alcohol is not permitted anywhere within the state park.
Swimming is permitted in designated swimming areas along the lakeshore, but there are no lifeguards on duty.
Park amenities include showers and restrooms, marina boat slips, a gas pump, and a shop with groceries, live bait, and kayak and canoe rentals.
Campsites are pet-friendly, but pets need to be kept on a leash at all times.

Possum Kingdom Campground

Very well maintained. Close to trails. I was the only one there due to the cold weather. Plenty of roaming deer and ducks to befriend.

Possum Kingdom Campground

The lake is beautiful and clean no doubt about that, but I was completely disappointed with my campsite at the Lakeview campgrounds. I understand it was July 4th weekend and I knew it would be crowded, but I didn't expect to have a loud, large family of about 30 right next to my site. The fire pit was on the wrong side and was about 12 feet from our neighbors. Really awkward because they were facing us. I booked this particular site because the pictures showed it had a stand up grill to cook on. It did not only the fire pit grill. The rangers were nice but they were no help since they couldn't move the fire pit for us. Our neighbors were loud until midnight and kept shining their truck lights in our tents. We packed up the next morning.
