A family friendly campsite in the gardens of a French château, limited to a few pitches so that space is guaranteed

From the second you arrive at Le Château de Monfréville the quaint rusticity of the place is overwhelming. Parked at the entrance, you may use the green trolleys to bring your stuff to the vehicle-free pitches beyond. Then, a spacious site is revealed, limited to just 25 tents so customers are guaranteed to never feel crowded. Also, Perrine and Thibault may help you pull your trailer tent with their 1968 vintage tractor.

There is ample room for children to play, open spaces where the donkey and horse can graze, and a swimming pond perfect for an authentic camping dip!

The greenery of the château gardens are unmarred by sanitary blocks. Instead campers head into the cellars of the castle where immaculately kept ablutions are accompanied by power sockets, fridge freezers...

Overlooking a stunning national park, Le Château de Monfréville is the perfect place to discover migrating storks, hooting owls or gregarious bullfrogs that offer a dawn chorus each morning. A cycle ride also takes you to the coast, a 10 minutes journey in the car. Here the historic sandy beaches of D-Day are backed by fascinating museums, while sites like the famous Bayeux Tapestry are also close at hand.

Owners Perrine and Thibault are attentive and welcoming, while their smallholding of animals and tiny onsite honesty shop reflect the easy-going, rural atmosphere of the site.

Camp Monfreville is good old fashioned camping at its best! Great pitches, fabulous views with just the great outdoors & nothing added. There are no cars allowed on the campsite. Cars remain parked at the entrance. There is a true outdoor feeling with nature. Children can roam freely playing with new found friends. July & August mornings see the bakery delivering delicious croissants, pains au chocolat and bread to your camping. Three evenings each week are a cracking social event with home cooked meal served. There is an honesty shop with charcoal, marshmallows & all the little essentials you may need along with a washing machine. Enjoy our swimming pool after a day of exploring Normandy, play ping pong, or just sit back & relax. We have fire pits which you can help yourself too. Hot showers, loos and a wash up area are situated in the cellars of the chateau. There are fridges & freezers available. Free WIFI and charging points. We have a maximum of 25 tents at any one time. We absolutely promise to never be overcrowded. A tourist tax is requested at the end of the stay. This tax helps the tourism office to maintain the beauty of our beaches, our streets, our towns and public buildings.

This is the best site I’ve ever stayed at, where to start! The grounds are lovely, the swimming pool is set amongst trees and is very inviting. Excellent facilities and our hosts catered for every need. Loved the option to dine communally, there’s such a great vibe at the chateaux 🌞

Chateau Camping at it's finest!
Tent
We absolutely loved camping at the Chateau. Thibault and Perrine went out our their way to ensure that everyone had what they needed, to include making a bakery run every morning! In the evenings, they made everyone feel like family......and for those of us who were in the area for the 80th anniversary of D-Day, they waded through the local bureaucracy, to acquire a necessary sticker for access to events. We can speak highly enough about our experience there.

Idyllic Camping Spot Monfréville
Tent · With kids
Chateau Montreville was a fitting end to our camping holiday. We had one night stay and the munchkins and us had the most amazing stay. Such an idyllic location and experience all round spoilt by the hospitality of our hosts and their children. We struggled to get our Kids away because they were having the most amazing time. Thank you for all the exceptional facilities, kitchen, toilets as well as all the sport equipments for the kids. The location is perfect for cycling or trail runs to the local town Isigny-sur-Mer. We were also met a few folks taking part in the D Day commemoration. We hope to come back and stay again. We have recommended you to a few friends already. Thank You 🥰 Michael and Katie

A bucket list experience!
Tent
I had such a magical time here! I’ve wanted to visit for so long, but I’m worried that I wouldn’t be able to visit without a car. I am so glad I committed to my first bikepacking trip to camp here - the 32km bike ride from Bayeux through Surrain is so beautiful and pastoral (recommend taking the advice of local bike shops/tourism board over Google maps). The facility itself is practically glamping, with hot showers, refrigerators, a microwave, and fire pits for anyone who would like to use one. My only regret was that I was too sleepy when I arrived to watch the chickens, so I’ll have to go back - I’ve already sold some people on a trip through Normandy from the pictures alone. Above all, the hosts are so friendly, generous and kind, and very eco-conscious, which I really appreciated. Truly a séjour inoubliable :)

My family and I loved this camping site. The hosts are very welcoming and the site is wonderful. There was so much to do for our four kids that we easily could have spent a whole week there. Whenever we make our way out there next time, we will certainly stay there again. Oh and the views are beautiful! I highly recommend it to everyone.

Perrine and Thibault warmly welcome guests of all ages for a truly unique holiday since 2021. "Le Château de Monfréville" is a family-run boutique camping idyllically set in the heart of the Normandy countryside. The site overlooks The Cotentin, the Bessin national park which is home to storks, herons, kingfishers and many other birds whilst the chateau has a baffling history dating back to William the Conqueror. With a no car and no caravans/ campers policy on the site, this makes a super happy relaxed atmosphere, with kids running freely and parents relaxing without the worry. The swimming pool is a highlight. Bathrooms are in the cellars of the chateau : hot showers, no meters, power points ... The wash up sinks, bins, recycle, 3 big fridges, microwave are also in the cellars.
Nearby attractions

Le Château de Monfréville, though a small château by French standards, makes up for it with extensive gardens and a prime position overlooking the Regional Nature Park of Cotentin and Bessin (0033 233 716 190). It is centrally located for Utah and Omaha Beach (20 minutes drive), with fascinating museums and miles of sandy beaches. Utah Beach Museum (+33 233 719 236), the Omaha Beach Memorial Museum (+33 231 219 744) and the Bayeux War Cemetery are perhaps the most poignant of insights into D-Day and the Second World War. The charming medieval town of Bayeux is home to the famous 11th-century tapestry, listed as a “Memory of the World” by UNESCO. Mont St Michel (0033 233 601 430) is an hour's drive, as is Giverny, the home of Monet's Gardens (0033 232 512 821). There's a cheese factory (0033 231 513 333) and (separate) caramel factory (0033 231 516 650) in the local town of Isigny, while the local tourist office here is also a decent starting point to discovering the area.

Food and drink

Bread and pastries will be available every day of the week, except Monday. The great restaurants of Isigny (4km)  "Le Central" (0033 231 510 960). Similarly, the traditional fishing village of Grandcamp Maisy "La Marée" (0033 231 214 100), "La Tinquettte" (0033 231 226 490) and "La Belle Marinière" (0033 231 226 123), all excellent.
