This north Tassie coastal town has beautiful beaches and great birdwatching.
At the mouth of the Port Sorell river, the eponymous coastal town is a laid-back retreat hemmed in by beaches and wetlands. To the south, the sprawling wetlands of the Rubicon Estuary are a honeypot for birdwatchers, where you can spy pied oystercatchers and waders. To the west, you can go trout fishing and spot platypus in the Warrawee Forest Reserve or head across the river to Narawntapu National Park, where kangaroos, Tasmanian devils, and wombats roam around rugged headlands, sand dunes, and saltwater lagoons. Just a 20-minute drive from Devonport and an hour from Launceston, Port Sorell is a strategic basecamp for campers. Various options are available, whether you prefer a tranquil farmland campsite, a beachfront cabin rental, or a caravan park or holiday park with powered sites and an on-site dump point. Over at the national park, you’ll find tent-only beach sites, equestrian campsites, and caravan sites, too.
