Tucked between Moura and Miles in the heart of the south Queensland countryside, Taroom’s claim to fame is its discovery by early explorer Ludwig Leichhardt. LL allegedly took a shine to the town, camping by the Dawson River and carving his initials into a tree that now takes pride of place along the main street. Today, campers can still camp along the riverside or by the nearby Chain Lagoons, where you can also fish, kayak, or walk along the scenic riverfront trails. If you fancy venturing further afield, a number of state parks lie within day-trip distance, affording plenty of opportunities to escape the beaten track and get back to nature. Follow remote bushwalking trails through Barakula State Forest, explore off-road in a 4WD in Belington Hut State Forest, or seek out a remote bush campsite in Expedition State Forest.
