Rural towns don’t get more “Aussie” than this folk song icon.
At first glance, Gundagai is your typical rural Australian town, overlooking the Murrumbidgee River and surrounded by sheep and cattle stations. But beyond the odds, this humble town has become an unlikely icon, making its way into more than a few Australian country songs. Folk songs like “Where the Dog Sits on the Tuckerbox” (which refers to the town’s quirky dog statue) and “Along the Road to Gundagai” have put Gundagai firmly on the pop culture map. A 2-hour drive from Canberra, Gundagai is the place to discover Australia’s colonial and Aboriginal history, go wine tasting in the Riverina wine region, and fish for trout along the river. Campers have a variety of options, too. Park up at the RV rest stop, a great free option for self-sufficient campers; check into one of the riverside campgrounds; rent a cabin at the tourist park; or snag a nearby Hipcamp.
