Wildwoods - Private bush surrounds

6 sites · RVs, Tents330 acres · Megalong, NSW
At Wildwoods you'll find 330 acres of natural bushland and a small amount of cleared farmland/paddocks with incredible views in every direction. Endless gullies, mountains, forests, cliffs, and caves to explore on the property or on the crown land adjoining. An amazing amount of wildlife - Birds, wombats, kangaroos of all kinds (wallaby, wallaroo, eastern greys etc), goannas, echidnas, turtles, ducks just to name a few. There are also plenty of roads to ride and explore via mountain bike or foot. I have only owned this property for a couple of years so there is not much here, every camper that stays helps to improve and maintain the land for future use. The road in is a little rough, and there is only a small amount of levelled land. But it is still an amazing spot, where nature does all the hard work, and I would love to share it with people. This is the perfect place for those who want to be in total peace and quiet, surrounded by nature and wildlife. Each campsite is private, some more so than others - Read each description for details. *Please note* Megalong Road (the only access in to and out of Megalong Valley) sustained a major landslide on 5/4/24. The road is open, but there is boom gates, an escort vehicle and one small lane open only. The journey down is slow, with tight corners, but it is beautiful. Take your time and enjoy it. Don't come in a hurry.

Pine Gums, via Goulburn.

8 sites · RVs, Tents155 acres · Goulburn, NSW
Pine Gums is so close to everything but also feels a world away from everyone. From the time you pull in, to the time you leave, the experience at Pine Gums is peaceful, rewarding and one you will always cherish and remember. With so many people coming back time and time again, bringing friends and family, this really does speak for itself. This site was previously a pine forest and was harvested back in 2018. We are clearing some ground for grazing cattle while letting some regrowth come through for the wildlife. We have plenty of kangaroos, possums, wombats just to name a few and an abundance of birdlife. We have multiple options for campers. Our comfort camp has an an undercover BBQ area with seating, a built-in fireplace and gas BBQ. There is also a proper flushing toilet and hot/cold shower, solar lighting and USB charging port. We also have 5 Quick Camp spaces for those self-sufficient campers who want to get away from it all in a quiet neck-of-the-woods. You'll be surrounded by peace and quiet to pull up the van, pitch the tent or roll out the swag. At night, sit and listen to the sounds of silence as you glance up to the stars. This spot feels a world away but still has the convenience of being only 10 minutes off the Hume Hwy and only 20 minutes from Goulburn where you can get all your daily needs. There is plenty of firewood laying around the property for the campfire so bring your saw, cut some wood, and just enjoy. No firewood is to be taken off the property. Please always consider the next camper and leave some available and ready. Pet friendly! (Please always keep pets with you and away from the cattle/wildlife) 4x4 is definitely recommended especially if you are towing.

Camp Medlow

1 site · Tent3 acres · Medlow Bath, NSW
Camp Medlow is located in Medlow Bath in the upper Blue Mountains, and is just 800m from Medlow Bath railway station, and only 8 minutes drive to Katoomba or 5 minutes drive to Blackheath - so is conveniently located close to all the key attractions, like Scenic World, the Grand Canyon, the Three Sisters, plus all the amazing tracks, trails, bushwalks, and abseiling and climbing locations that the upper Mountains is famous for. You can pitch up to two tents on the level and very secluded campsite where you'll have complete privacy in a fantastic bushland setting, which backs directly onto Blue Mountains National Park. The campsite is directly in the centre of 3 acres of natural open forest comprising many old and tall Blue Mountains Ash eucalyptus trees (Eucalyptus oreades), Banksias, Waratahs, and Wattle. The property is also home to Gang-gang and black Cockatoos, parrots, owls, magpies, spotted-tailed Quolls, possums, Eastern bent-wing bats, and wallabies. Camp Medlow is for TENTS ONLY. Camper vans, caravans, and car rooftop tents are NOT permitted. This is because you can't get your car/van to the actual campsite where you pitch your tents. It's just a 50m flat walk along the rustic trail to the campsite from the car park - so you'll need to carry your gear to where you'll set up your tents. There is designated parking for two cars (not camper vans, caravans, or rooftop tents) on the Beaufort Street (dirt road) side of the property. The level campsite is placed next to a rocky outcrop that features a traditional camp fire circle and is shaded by a big old Ash tree. The statutory Bush Fire Danger Period has now commenced for NSW. The Bush Fire Danger Period runs from 1 October to 31 March each year. This means NO CAMPFIRES ARE PERMITTED AT CAMP MEDLOW - NO EXCEPTIONS can be made, sorry. Do NOT under any circumstances light a campfire at our property. Gas and electric barbecues and cookers are still approved for cooking, but all cooking must be undertaken at the fire circle. NO COOKING AT THE PARKING AREA AT ALL. Cooking at the fire circle not only maintains basic fire safety, but protects the precious flora and fauna on the property, as well as adds to your own privacy. Please see the site rules for more info on the Bush Fire Danger Period and Total Fire Ban (TOBAN) days. There is no water available at the property, so please bring your own - both for drinking and cooking. There are no toilets on the property so you must bring your own camp toilet that you take with you when you leave. Absolutely DO NOT dispose your human waste or toilet paper/wipes on the property. The closest public toilets are at Medlow Bath Park on Railway Parade, which is only a short and easy 10 minute walk. These toilets are open 24x7. The Grand Canyon Walking Track, which is in Blackheath, is 10 mins up the road from the campsite and Blue Mountains National Park is right at your tent's doorstep. No pets please.

Please take all rubbish with you. Please make sure to follow COVID-19 guidelines by washing and sanitising hands especially when using shared areas. Pick a camp site in the middle aisle around the sheds, bathroom block and driveway OR in our top hill paddock (if gates are open) to take in the views. You are welcome to camp anywhere in the paddock - please note these sites are only accessible on foot, please do not drive into the paddock. No fires in the paddock please, there is a communal campfire spot available. We can accommodate RVs on the granite parking pads near the bathroom block. There is a power pole close by to plug in to. Note the ground off the driveway and parking pads can get very wet and boggy so to avoid getting bogged please try to stick to the driveway as much as possible.

The best camping near Abercrombie River National Park guide

Overview

About

A sweeping stretch of protected gum and bark forests in the NSW Central Tablelands, Abercrombie River National Park offers plenty of ways to play, from bushwalking through mountainous woodland to lazy days spent swimming in one of the park’s three rivers. It's also a fantastic place to spot wildlife like kangaroos, wallabies, emus, and more than 60 bird species. If you have a 4WD vehicle, test its off-roading capabilities on rugged mountain tracks that lead to a handful of secluded campgrounds.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for caravans: Bummaroo Ford Campground is the only place inside Abercrombie River National Park that allows trailers and caravans. It’s also great for families and has river swimming access.
  • Best for a secluded swim: The Beach Campground is only accessible by 4WD, but this off-the-track campground has amazing shady spots along the Abercrombie River.
  • Best for groups: Spread out and socialize among the grassy riverside flats at the Silent Creek Campground

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Like all campgrounds in NSW, advance reservations are required and can be booked online.
  2. Summer holidays and Easter weekend are generally the busiest times, and spots book up quickly. For fewer crowds, aim for spring or fall, or try visiting on a weekday.

When to go

Spring is the ideal time to visit, when wildflowers lining the park’s waterways and hillsides burst into bloom. Wintertime is best avoided, as roads become icy and nighttime temperatures can be freezing at higher elevations. No matter what time of year you go, try sitting quietly near a waterhole at dusk for a chance to spot one of NSW’s most elusive animals—the wild platypus.

Know before you go

  • Most roads within the park require a 4WD vehicle. More capable cars can explore the steep, rugged tracks accessed through the eastern entrance on Felled Timber Road, while those with lower clearance should stick to the west side from the Arkstone Road entrance.
  • Roads leading from the eastern entrance entrance should not be attempted during wet or icy weather.
  • Trailers are only allowed via the western entrance.
  • Flush toilets are available at all campgrounds, and barbecue pits are at all but Bummaroo Ford.
