Crowded but the facilities were clean and kept up. The campgrounds are tight but hey, it's Yellowstone and sacrifices must be made to see the majesty of this wonderful place. Grant Village is a little far from the North end of the park but anyone who has been to YNP knows you'll spend a lot of time driving from spot to spot.
I stayed at Grant Village in September 2017. While it was one of the more populated campgrounds, I really enjoyed camping here. The facilities were very well maintained, including the bathrooms and the showers which were invaluable after our long hikes!
Decent campground, my main complaint would be that we were at a site right by the road and it was very noisy and the car headlights shone right into our camp. And, you have to drive to get anywhere. It was fun to explore the lakeshore though- a very nice place to watch the sunset. This campground is about 30 minutes from Grand Canyon/Mud Volcano and Old Faithful, although there is a nice lake-side Gyester area about 5 min away, of course, driving. Easy to check in/out.
I wanted to add a few more things - for the bathroom, I suggest a toiletry bag with a hook, and even better if it is clear, so you can see everything in each section. Bring sandals or flip-flops for the shower. If you can, ask for a site away from the main road (fast traffic from those going to loops E and onward). In the end it was fine, we just didn't appreciate the 3am wake-up from a departing group who liked to pack with the car radio blaring.
We normally backcountry camp so Grant was my first campground. Our family stayed at Grant and Canyon and found we liked Canyon better. Grant was fine, and the site was mainly shaded, but we experienced some noisy neighbors and road traffic. The bathroom was clean when it started but the patrons didn't pick up tp. There were some hooks but minimal counter space, The shower and laundry facilities were fine and the staff (rangers) were very helpful. The reservation process was ok (better than Xanterra).
