Austin Dam Memorial Park

135 sites · RVs, Tents76 acres · PA
Just outside the quaint town of Austin sits a vivid reminder of one of Pennsylvania's worst disasters – the Austin Flood. In 1909, the dam was constructed on Freeman Run to power the Bayless Papermill downstream. Many wondered if the dam was safe. On September 30, 1911, Austin found out. Poor construction, coupled with torrential rain, resulted in the dam's collapse. Nearly 400 million gallons of water were released, destroying everything for 8 miles. At least 78 people perished in the tragedy. It was the second worst flood disaster in Pennsylvania's history and sixth worst dam failure in U.S. history. The tragedy sparked new legislation to improve dam safety, and the Austin Dam was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The ruins of the dam still stand, surrounded by a 76-acre park, as a tribute to the lives lost in the Austin Flood. Don't miss one of Potter County's best kept secrets!

The best camping near Sinnemahoning State Park guide

Overview

About

Excuse us while we have a love affair with Sinnemahoning State Park. It’s a new flavor every season for this sexy park: from the fiery tones that mark fall and the snow-topped trees that take your breath away each winter, to the blossoming beauty in spring and summer, this 1,910-acre park is easily one of our East Coast faves.

Searching for some’n to do? Fish for compliments—err, trout, bass, and catfish—and motorboat ‘til you can’t stand it anymore on George B. Stevenson Reservoir. Camp like kings and queens at the shaded sites boasting flush toilets, warm showers, and electrical hookups or get cozy in a cabin. Ice skate, ice fish, snowmobile, or scoot across the land on skis when the season’s right. You can even take a class on canoeing, biking, photography, and wildlife watching. All that ain’t enough? There are several festivals and events throughout the year that you will not want to miss (hellooo, sled dog racing). Seriously, this state park has got it all, and it’s completely won us over. If you ain’t with us, you’re against us.

When to go

The prime time to visit Sinnemahoning State Park is during the mild spring and fall months, when the park is alive with vibrant colors and active wildlife. Summer offers warm days perfect for exploring, though it's also the peak season. Winters can be harsh, with snow limiting access to certain areas, making it less ideal for a visit.

Know before you go

  • Check the weather forecast before your trip, as conditions can change rapidly in the park.
  • Wear appropriate footwear and clothing for hiking and exploring the diverse terrain.
  • Be aware of wildlife in the area; maintain a safe distance and do not feed the animals.
  • Some areas of the park may have limited cell phone reception; plan accordingly.
  • Visit the park's official website or contact the visitor center for the latest information on closures and accessibility.
