Souhegan Shores

March 6th Update: Saw the beaver out for a swim yesterday about 1PM. Trails are plowed and passable to a four wheel drive vehicle. In a hard freeze likely open to 2WD vehicle. Conditions can change with a thaw or more snow, so check ahead with your host. Getting in is the easier part, but confirm your vehicle won't have difficulty getting back up the slight rise to exit the sites. (back to our regularly scheduled campsite description...) Site-1 is located under the trees adjacent to a 3 acre meadow and Christmas Tree farm. Camp near the bank of the Souhegan River in the shade of white pine, shag bark hickory and blue birch while listening to the river tumble over the ledges upstream. In season, enjoy the chest deep swimming hole 100 feet from your campsite. Two horses graze on the other side of the privacy fence. If you don't like friendly dogs try site 2 where we have a better chance of keeping our dog Wilson from dropping in to visit. He loves people too much not to want to greet folks on Site 1. Site-2 is at the farthest most downstream end of the property and from mid-May to mid-October it is totally screened by foliage. From your site you only see trees and the river. If you don't like other dogs, this is the site you want. Still no guarantee Wilson won't visit, but it's easier to keep Wilson away from this corner of the property. The other side of the river is town conservation land so the only people you're likely to see will be passing by in kayaks or on paddleboards. In dry season, both sites are a great place to start a float trip and you'll likely have the next 1.5 miles all to yourself since rapids up stream become impassable in July and August. If planning a winter trip, check ahead to ensure Bob has cleared the access roads. You are only two traffic lights away from the Merrimack Premium Outlet Mall if you need something to do during inclement weather.

There is quick access to the Rockingham Recreational Trail, which is ideal for walking, mountain biking, and exploring. There is also a great swimming hole nearby called Chivers Pond. The campsites are located on the back corner of the Chivers Farm property and seasonal farm goods will be available for campers to purchase coming in 2025.

Surround yourself in the natural beauty of a working flower farm in Maine in this quiet, secluded location that's close to area beaches, lighthouses, and more. Located about an acre behind our family home (which you can see from the spot), the camp site is within steps of our barn, which has both running water and electrical hookups (20amps) for campers to use. An open field next door plays host to numerous deer and turkeys, and the flower fields feature a rotating lineup of beautiful blooms (depending on the time of the season.) We are located off a busy street where cars drive a little too fast — if you have a dog that needs to be walked daily, we would recommend stopping by the beach or one of the many nearby walking trails instead of venturing down the road. Max length of vehicles is 30 feet -- we've found that any longer and the turns are too tight. 10 mins to grocery store (Hannaford) and gas stations 12 mins to local beaches (Long Sands and Short Sands) 15 mins to Portsmouth, NH 20 mins to Nubble Lighthouse 25 mins to Ogunquit, ME 35 mins to Kennebunkport, ME 45 mins to Portland, ME A final note: This is a working flower flower farm and on occasion there will need to be someone working in the field near to the campsite, often during the very early hours of the morning (6am during the spring and summer, later in the fall.) That said, we don't use tractors or any heavy machinery and we will always make our best effort to communicate this ahead of time.

About

New England's maritime history comes to life at this 9-acre historic site. The preserved marina was among the most influential ports from America's early years. Today, it offers walking tours of wharves, historic buildings, and a replica ship.

Nestled on Salem Harbor, this port hosted merchant ships carrying goods between Asia and America. The site now tells a story of the colonial period and Revolutionary War. Explore the wharves to discover the role of sailors and privateers in Massachusetts' early history.

The replica tall ship The Friendship of Salem is docked at the port (when it's not getting a tune-up). Nearby, the Derby House looks much like it did when it was built in 1762. Both of these popular attractions require a ranger-guided tour. Itching to explore on your own? The 1675 Narbonne House is open for self-guided tours, hosting 150,000 artifacts. You can also walk through the 1819 U.S. Custom House where author Nathaniel Hawthorne once worked.

For all guided tours, you need a reservation. You can phone in ahead of time or make your reservation in-person at the visitor center. While you're there, take time to walk through the museum or watch one of the short history films. The exhibits of the port itself are open year-round. However, the visitor center cuts back its working days from November to May. Check the days ahead of time if you plan on visiting during the off-season.

Around the port, you can find picnic tables for a packed lunch. Just don't forget to pack out your trash. When planning your trip, we recommend at least a full day to explore this port. The rich history of this Salem Maritime site is too fascinating to pass up.
