Get into low gear and enjoy the slow pace and peace of our little working farm on the edge of the hill country. Low Gear Farmstead's 75 acres border the lovely San Saba River, providing campers the opportunity to swim, wade, fish and paddle. Farm animals including dairy goats, chickens, and horses inhabit the property, but wildlife such as deer, wild turkey, ringtail, fox and armadillo is also abundant. Bird watchers will be delighted at the diversity of birds, especially in spring. Don't forget to look up at night as our dark skies provide excellent stargazing on clear nights and a very visible Milky Way. We limit the number of campsites and spread them out so that campers may enjoy privacy and seclusion. Campsites are provided with compost toilets and most sites also have a fire ring. 4WD is not required unless we have had heavy rains, otherwise most vehicles, except very low clearance ones, do fine. The nearest town, Menard, is about a 12 minute drive from the property and has a grocery store, gas stations, a couple restaurants, a pub and a bakery. Lovers of history might enjoy visiting the Presidio de San Saba, about 20 minutes from the farm, as well as the historic Pioneers Rest Cemetery in town. Low Gear Farmstead is a safe, welcoming space for queers and POC.
Camping at Lowgear Farmstead offers a serene and private experience that campers consistently praise. Visitors love the tranquil setting by the San Saba River, complemented by the soothing sounds of nature, making it an ideal spot for relaxation. Logan, the host, is frequently mentioned for being responsive and welcoming, adding to the positive experience. Guests also appreciate the company of the friendly dogs, especially Bjorn, who often accompanies campers during their stay.
We love staying at Lowgear. The river offers cool fun, fishing, boating, swimming. Lots of areas to investigate and enjoy birdwatching walks. Friendly helpful host, Logan and Gear will make you very welcome and share their local knowledge. Menard has a public pool open in summer and Menard Station offers cheap ice, water and coffee for a donation. A great place to unwind.
Camping at the Lowgear Farmstead was super peaceful! The campsite Orchard Falls was very nice and secluded there is a river that runs right near the site and the waterfall will literally put you to sleep with how peaceful it sounds. Directions to the property were very easy to get to and the owner was very nice and responsive. As long as you respect their property they'll respect you and you can have all the peace and quiet you want. There is an outhouse available if you need. They have a very nice pup that showed up to our campsite in the morning while we were making breakfast we gave him a few sausages and he hung around with us for a little while! 😁 He even walked us out when we left!
Will come back!
Our campsite at Orchard Falls was fantastic, and Logan was a great host! Burt the dog was very sweet and spent most of the weekend kicking it with us at our campsite and in the San Saba. 10/10, would absolutely come back again.
Camping at Lowgear Farmstead was peaceful and private. We set up at dark and fell asleep to the babbling of the San Saba river and woke up to the wonderful view that the River View campsite had to offer. Our host Logan was very responsive and kind. If you like animals I recommend buying the goat experience! We got to walk with the goats and watch them forage for pecans! 10/10 experience would recommend!
Beautiful land with great owners! Hosts were super kind. The animals were awesome. Views were amazing.
