Remote private tract in northern Michigan with Portage Creek to camp at, right up close. No neighbors, no other campers! 10 miles from Grayling so you can run into town for needed supplies with little time or effort. Bring your kayaks and swimsuit for a quick splash. The creek is mostly shallow with some deeper spots. There are downed trees so the kids can kayak without going too far away but they can go out of line of sight and hearing, so please be watchful. The last ½ mile road in can be very sandy in spots or sometimes flooded so you are encouraged to call or enquire prior to arrival, 4WD recommended for towing an RV. We recommend your first arrival during daylight hours so you can see the entrance of the property. The non-maintained county road, the last ½ mile in is typically not passable during winter and snow seasons except by snowshoe or snowmobile due to the snow level. Never leave children or pets unattended! Be aware of the chance encounter with an endangered massasauga rattler, it may be endangered but it is still poisonous and they have been seen on and around the property before. Ticks are on the rise, and the springtime can be very buggy, and mosquito-y with the surrounding swampy areas. There are bear, coyote, and an assortment of other creatures big and small. This is a wilderness area and so please be aware of wild animals. Never leave your small contained fire unattended at the firepit and watch for sparks, completely douse the fire before you leave as this is a fire-prone area. No fires outside the firepit for safety reasons and fire hazards. If you want firewood here in Grayling, there are a few places that sell it. There is down debris in our woods but as the summer goes by, it may be picked through. You can pull and circle through the open area with your RV, or you can tuck into the RV / camping spot. There is enough room for 5 or 6 cars but campers may crowd that a bit. If you are tent camping, you are welcome to set up elsewhere on the property. There are trails throughout the property and you may see the ‘No Trespassing’ signs all along the perimeter of the 23.7 acres. The toilet is now working again, but we ask that you not overtaxed it ;p . The small cabin is fairly stocked with pots and pans, good for campfire cooking. Picnic table and fire pit with cooking grate on site for your use. There are tons of nearby outdoor recreational opportunities and water bodies very close by, or you can spend your time on this private tract. The military board land and small arms range is just past the road to the west, you may hear small arms practice at times, the sound of freedom.Remote private tract in northern Michigan with Portage Creek to camp at, right up close. RV details
Travel trailers, Fifth wheels, Toy haulers, Pop-up campers, Class A RVs, Class B RVs, Class C RVs, Campervans, and Cars allowed
4 WD is recommended but we have had some smaller and lighter vehicles get in with no issue. If you are hauling a large trailer, you will only want to do this with a solid 4WD truck. The sand area on the smaller road leading to the property may be an issue if you do not have 4WD and are hauling a large trailer.
Vehicles under 35 feet allowed
There is room to pull through your RV or trailer. You can also back into the camping site. The half mile road into the property on County Line Rd is a non-maintained 2 track dirt road and can be sandy or wet in spots. This may not be suitable for low clearance 2 wheel drive cars. We've had a number of campers that can access this with no problem but we would still recommend 4wd if you are concerned about getting stuck. Please feel free to contact us and we can tell you more to make sure this is a good fit for you.

Surface type: Grass or field
We've had a few campers parked out here and it has worked very well. If you like, you can park closer to the water for a lovely morning view right from your window. If you do this, PLEASE walk the area where you want to park first as the grass may hide holes or uneven terraine, depending on where you park, it may not be as flat as the area by the cabin or camping site.

What to expect
RV/tent site
You'll have this Hipcamp all to yourself.

Campfires allowed
Firepit, communal, private. You must keep campfire attended at all times and within the fire ring and keep a bucket of water at the fire. Keep it small and without a lot of sparks. Please be mindfull of sparks at all times. This is a fire prone area in all dry seasons. When you are not attending the fire, please douse with water and make sure the fire is completely out. Please review local fire restrictions from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for any fire restrictions or bans, these are date and weather-dependent. https://www.michigan.gov/
Toilet available
Flush toilet. We have a flush toilet available now! It is basic, you'll need to pour the creek water in from a bucket but it works now. It is functional for limited use but NOT for large groups or 20 flushed a day. We will provide cleaning materials for it but we do ask you clean the toilet and bathroom area prior to leaving. This is still a rustic area and we do not want to attract wildlife.
Pets allowed
Off leash. You are welcome to bring your pets out to enjoy the wilds of northern Michigan. Please be aware that there are raptors, coyotes, bears and other wild animals so be mindful and aware of the whereabouts of smaller and even larger dogs and cats, they would be easy prey for the predators. We've never had a problem but with the tracks and evidence we've seen, it can easily be an issue. Be aware that we do have sightings of black bear. Please clean up after dogs if they go potty in the main clearing area and trails for the next visitors.
Cooking equipment present
Grill over firepit, private, cookware, cooking utensils, dishware, cutlery, basic seasoning and oils, sink or other dishwashing station. Right now we are a bit basic but do have an inside kitchen area for your use. We have open-fire safe cookware, cast iron pots and pans, hot pads etc. We have long BBQ tongs, prongs, spatula, hot dog prongs. It would be good for smaller groups but maybe not sufficient for large groups. Please keep checking in and we'll be adding cooking utensils and camping dishware etc soon. There is a sink but you will need to bring the water to it. We have only a few fire safe dishes, perhaps 4-6 at this time. We have a large 2 burner camping stove that may be used but please clean and put back under the cover after use. It is located on the cabin porch with a cover for protection. You will need to bring the stove gas tank.
Picnic table present
We have a plastic picnic table and 6-7 plastic chairs. Please do not put very hot items straight on the table. After use, please prop back up sideways onto the tree. If you want to put the plastic chairs in the water (there are shallow areas) or across to the opposite side of the creek, that is okay, please take them back out again after use and don't leave them in the water.
No potable water
Bring your own water, purify from river or stream. We recommend you bring in your own drinking water to be on the safe side. Creek water can be chancy!
No showers
Bathe in river or stream. Portage creek is a great place to splash around, there are deep enough spots to go underwater too. Please only bring biodegradable soaps for both bathing and washing dishes.
Pack it out
We do not provide trash bins due to the potential for attracting wildlife. Please burn paper items like toilet paper or pack trash out with you.
No wifi
Laundry absent

We had a wonderful time in the back woods. Excellent starry nights with warm campfires. We explored Grayling and went for a dog walk at the Rayburn Estate. We appreciated the flush toliet and the shed to store our extra gear when not needed.

So secluded and the kids loved it!
Tent · With kids
We loved camping on Susan’s property! The swimming hole was so pretty, shallow and safe for the kids to play in. I loved waking up early to see the early morning fog rising off the water while enjoying a cup of coffee. Susan provides more for campers than I could have ever expected. The outhouse was clean and easy to use. The cabin also had more than we needed. We definitely hope to come back to this beautiful property.

Private and beautiful view!
Tent
We really enjoyed our quick but peaceful 2 night stay, Susan’s directions were spot on and the camp area was clean with a beautiful view. This was our first camping trip taking my boyfriend’s dog and she loved the creek and walking the trail with us.

Once again such a beautiful site. We watched a king fisher catching fish in the creek. My husband loved the sound from camp Grayling! Close to the trails. If I ever come back this way I would stay here again.
