Originally Stonewood was a working farm, supporting a family a hundred years ago. Eventually, there was a Christmas Tree Farm on the property, then it was sold off and used for a hunting camp. That was when the little stone cabin was completely refurbished and a beautiful log addition was added. There are still remnants of the original barns and silo out in the pasture. Today it is a permanent residence again, with the intent of sharing the land and the animals with folks who need the therapy of the peace and quiet along with the animals. If you choose to come for a stay, you will be helping to support a program that will benefit our veterans and first responders. The sky here is so clear you feel like you can reach up and touch the stars. When you camp in the tall pines, they block the wind at the bottom where you are so there's no blowing your tent around, yet you can see the trees swaying and hear the breeze. You will be surrounded by the night sounds, peepers and crickets to sing you to sleep along with the bass of the bullfrog and lately an owl has taken up residence and will come to visit and call to you during the night. If you're lucky, you could catch a glimpse of the young porcupine who have been spotted in the woods recently. They're shy, so you won't be bothered by them but they will sit high in the trees and chatter to you. Also, check out the other listings here at Camp Stonewood Ranch if a tipi would be something to peak your interest! A ten foot tipi stands in the forest, waiting for someone to come and enjoy a unique experience. You are within 30 miles of Grayling, Cadillac and Traverse City where there is always something doing, from festivals to wineries, horse shows on a grand scale to kayaking on the Manistee. Stonewood is just 10 miles outside of Kalkaska to the north and Fife Lake to the southwest. The Shore to shore trail is within minutes of the camp, and the North country trail is less then 10 miles away. The Manistee River is within 3 miles where the local canoe livery has everything from canoes to kayaks to inflatables for rent and they will take you up river as far as you would like, and your trip will end there within 3 miles from Camp Stonewood.
