Discover the most magical spots to pitch your tent or park your rig on your next Gloria Dei Church National Historic Site adventure.
Step into the oldest church in Pennsylvania when you visit Old Swedes'. Gloria Dei Church is located in the Southwark neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The congregation dates to 1677, and the church still boasts an active Episcopalian congregation today. Built in 1700 by Swedish Lutherans who settled in the area, the church became part of the Episcopal Diocese in 1845.
Visitors can stroll the dog-friendly grounds during the week when services are not held. The historic graveyard is one of the oldest in Philadelphia, in continuous use since the early 1700s. You'll find gravestones bearing the names of Swedish immigrants, Revolutionary War soldiers, and Civil War soldiers. Look for the grave of American painter James Peale and naturalist Alexander Wilson. You'll also find several members of George Washington's army buried here.
Gloria Dei's collection of historical and religious artifacts is a must-see. Models of the ships that transported early Swedish settlers to North America hang from the church's ceiling. Wood carvings and bibles from the 18th century are displayed alongside a bronze church bell that was cast in 1806. The baptismal font dates back to the 1600s. The single stained glass window is one of the earliest examples of American stained glass.
