Camp Darling

3 sites · Tents120 acres · Cheboygan, MI
We will be opening back up May 15th 2023! This beautiful 120 acre property was once an active gravel pit. When the original owner purchased it, he wanted ponds. He accomplished his goal and started a gravel pit business by selling the material that was dug up. This resulted in three gorgeous ponds that are now happily inhabited by ducks, turtles, herons, cranes, and the occasional bald eagle when we're lucky! It is completely surrounded by state land with many trails throughout the property. Camp Darling was purchased by us in July 2020 with the intention of creating a homestead, conservatory, and campground so that we could share the magic of this place with others. Learn more about this land: Pitch your tent on a beautiful, private campsite that is situated deep in our forest trails. Located on a 120 acre property surrounded by state land, you will be immersed in nature but conveniently located near town. The campsites are a few minute walk from our main house, and each site a one to two minute walk from each other - so you can expect complete privacy, but also available hosts if you need us! You can text or call us anytime. You will have to park and walk a few minutes to your site. There is a large open field available for parking near the trail entrance, we will have it clearly marked with a sign (It's also marked on the map: see photos). Each site has a pop-up tent bathroom - disposable bags are provided, a sandy spot for a tent, a fire ring, and plenty of firewood that could be collected at each site. We have a beautiful pond to view, and groomed trails you can explore. We have a well spigot available for running water, but you must filter it yourself for drinking.  You are expected to pack everything out and leave no trace. Our property is only 10 minutes from Mackinaw City, which offers many activities and good food options - also 10 minutes from downtown Cheboygan, which has a  Walmart and also a few food options and bars.

The best camping near Hoeft State Park guide

Overview

About

Biking, fishing, hunting, hiking, skiing... who could ask for anything more? Regardless, there is more: Hoeft State Park not only provides 300 acres of sandy coastline and wooded beauty for the outdoor activities you love, but its proximity to Lake Huron gives you a break from the usual extreme temperatures of the Midwest. With miles of trails, including a bike path that lands you first in nearby Rogers City, then at the site of the world’s largest open-pit limestone quarry, it’s an awesome place for wandering and sightseeing. Located at the upper end of Michigan, Hoeft is a convenient camping spot for those looking to explore islands in the nearby Straits of Mackinac.

When to go

The best time to visit Hoeft State Park is during the warm summer months, from June to August, when the park is in full bloom and the lake's waters invite for a swim. Spring and fall offer quieter visits with cooler weather, while winters can be harsh with limited access.

Know before you go

  • Check the weather forecast before your visit to pack appropriately for Michigan's variable climate.
  • Ensure you have a Recreation Passport for park entry; it's required for all visitors.
  • Trail maps are available online; download one to plan your hikes in advance.
  • For safety, always hike with a companion and inform someone of your itinerary.
  • Accessible facilities are available, but it's best to confirm ahead for specific needs.
