Discover the most magical spots to pitch your tent or park your rig on your next Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve adventure.
Explore the bayous of Louisiana when you visit this national historical park. A boardwalk lets you walk the Palmetto Trail and other walks without actually touching the swamp. You may see some alligators enjoying themselves right below you. (Don't worry, they can't get onto the boardwalk.) Your walk is peaceful and serene as you stroll through cypress swamps and palmettos.
Start at the Visitor Center. The movie may be difficult to hear at times, but you can learn about the different trails you can take. Each of them is different, and you can't go wrong. All the trails are stroller-friendly (only the Bayou Trail isn't on a raised boardwalk). If you're the first one on the path in the morning, keep your eyes out for spider webs, and prep for your walk with insect repellent. Keep your eyes open for some stunning large birds—You'll probably see herons and egrets, maybe even a falcon or two. Also look for wild deer, raccoons, rabbits, snakes, and the interlopers in the swamp: wild pigs (they're not supposed to be there).
You can find spots to pitch your tent or hook up your RV with a little help from Hipcamp. Look for farms and campgrounds near the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Area or Biloxi Wildlife Management Area.
