Overview

About

Discover the echoes of the past on a Lewis-Clark Canoe Camp camping expedition. This historic ground, situated in Idaho, carries the heritage of the Nez Perce people who have called this area home for thousands of years. Its claim to fame, however, is its role as a significant site for the Lewis and Clark Corps Of Discovery.

The park marks the spot where, in 1805, the Corps collaborated with the Nez Perce to craft the canoes that would eventually lead them to the Pacific Ocean. Arriving in a state of extreme hunger after their arduous journey along the Lolo Trail, the Corps partook in a feast of salmon and camas root provided by their hosts. Although the sudden shift in diet proved too rich, leading to illness, their determination persevered. Overcoming their weakened state and high temperatures, they achieved the remarkable feat of crafting five canoes in 12 days.

This location also bears the testament of the Corps' journey westward, as they left their saddles, gear, and horses under the care of the Nez Perce before embarking on their expedition to the Pacific.

Camping near Lewis-Clark Canoe Camp, apart from being a historical immersion, offers diverse outdoor activities. Explore the nearby Clearwater and Snake Rivers for fishing and boating, hike along the historic trails, or delve into the cultural heritage of the Nez Perce at their local heritage sites. A Lewis-Clark Canoe Camp camping trip delivers a blend of history and outdoor exploration, enriching your outdoor adventure with a touch of Idaho's rich past.
