Vineyard Hipcamp

10 sites · RVs, Tents36 acres · Mc Neal, AZ
Our first introduction to the wine and vineyard industry came when a now fellow colleague greeted us wearing a t-shirt, shorts and flip-flops. Thoroughly enjoying the idea of wearing this “work suit” every day, High Lonesome Vineyard went from a concept to reality. Located only 20 miles east of Tombstone, Arizona and 8 miles southwest of Elfrida, Arizona, High Lonesome Vineyard consists of approximately 36 acres of rich sandy loam in a fertile valley surrounded by mountains on all directions. And at an elevation of about 4,300 feet, the area experiences a four-season climate with summer temperatures seldom exceeding 100 degrees. Hikers, bird watchers and nature loving folks come to this area every year just for the warm summer breezes and clear night skies. This area also boasts of spectacular views of the early morning rising sun and incredible sunsets.  Come enjoy rustic camping here in the Vineyard Hipcamp area and experience the awesomeness that southeastern Arizona has to offer.Learn more about this land:Come camp next to a working vineyard with exceptional views of the desert sky.  You pick your spot as long as it is not directly in the vineyard, and enjoy the peaceful and tranquil sounds of the desert wildlife. High Lonesome Vineyard is located about 20 miles southeast of Tombstone, Arizona and 8 miles west of Elfrida, Arizona. You can easily commute to Tombstone to see the legends of the old west or drive on over to Elfrida/Gleeson area and see the old mining ghost towns. If active mining is your thing, visit Bisbee which is only 25 minutes away. Also, with a working cattle ranch nearby, take the opportunity to visit and see the daily workings of one of southeast Arizona's biggest ranches. A visit to the ranch is for a nominal fee and subject to availability. Wine tastings are also available for a small fee in addition to the camping fee. We have 6 German Shepherds that do what they do as guard dogs, bark when alerted. We take extra steps to keep the dogs quite for you at night during your stay, but its a high probability they will bark at you.

Bakers Akers

3 sites · RVs, Tents80 acres · Lordsburg, NM
Bakers Akers is located in what used to be Nebblett New Mexico but is now Virden New Mexico. The one room Nebblett school house was located on this property. Virden was settled by the Mormons when they were ran out of old Mexico by Poncho Villa. Kit Carson took this route guiding General Kearney and the Army of the west to California during the Mexican American war. It is now being discussed that Coronado may have come through this area also. The farm was used for breeding and training race horses. It is now a cow/calf operation. Learn more about this land: Camp on the Gila River amongst the century old Cottonwoods and Mulberry trees, with Bermuda grass carpeting. Plenty of shade to pitch a tent or park under. Wildlife abounds with deer, beaver, turkeys, javelina, and a large variety of birds. Located on a eighty acre cattle ranch. Quiet with great views of stars at night and majestic mountains in the day. The camp grounds are located beyond the cattle pastures and next to the Gila River. Fire pits available and plenty of wood to gather for burning. Eleven miles from the historic town of a Duncan Arizona, filled with little markets, craft store, antique shop, rock shop, and home town restaurants, if any needs arise or an itch needs scratching. With prior notice and extra fees a New Mexican dutch-oven dinner and hayride can be included.

Pineapple's Place

1 site · RV, Tent5 acres · Benson, AZ
We have just reopened our campground January 2023. Sleep under the trees of the mesquite bosque. Dip in our swimming hole when it's warm enough. Take a stroll down into the dry San Pedro River bed in the dry season. Our small homestead has dogs, cats, pigs and various small farm animals depending on the time of year. Besides our amazing bird population, we have a seasonal colony of bats on the property. Sit by the pond and watch as they whizz by to get a drink before they head out into the summer night. The three dogs pictured will likely supervise your camp but can always be penned up if they are unwanted. I grew up on this property, my daughter was born here and it has been various things over the years from a small family farm to a charter school to a work trade program. Now it's our small homestead now. All money raised by this site is going right back into the campground, eventually a small cabin space too! We do not live in cell service so please do not use our number as you would a mobile phone. It is a landline. The camp site is close enough to access our Wi-Fi.

The best camping near Fort Bowie National Historic Site guide

Overview

About

The remnants of Fort Bowie in Arizona mark a clash of cultures. On one side, there was the U.S. Army trying to make the Wild West safe for settlers. On the other were the Chiricahua Apache tribe and their way of life. The struggle for control of this part of Arizona culminated in Geronimo's surrender in 1886.

Hike 1-1/2 miles from the visitor's center to what's left of the fort. You'll get a sense of the loneliness and isolation in this wild, open land. This isolation means on a good spring day, the park may see 100 visitors. When bad weather hits, there aren't any people except the Rangers. Expect to spend at least two hours seeing everything on the site.

There are several landmarks on the way to the fort ruins. See the ruins of a Butterfield Overland Mail Station, where stagecoaches dropped off mail and took a break. A small cemetery has around 25 marked graves. The stones are updated to modern designs, and a pamphlet describes the lives of those buried here.

Definitely check out the replica Apache dwelling. The short hut is made of sticks and grass. It has a wide, tall opening as a door. There's enough space inside to sleep several people.

The visitor's center and museum contain artifacts found on the site. You can also see historical photographs of what life was like at Fort Bowie. In 1894, just before it was abandoned, the place bustled with activity.
