The camping site is great and quite private (if you like your privacy). Bob, the owner, was quite respectful, knowledgeable, humble, quick to respond, and he even gave us a 15 gallon water when we ran out of water. He checked on us occasionally to make sure we were ok and that we had a good time. Great place to stay and go away from the city, reset, watch the starry skies, and be with nature.
At night my wife and I heard some coyotes and wild boars but none camp near our campsite but it does give you some thrill. We saw rabbits, turkeys, possums, squirrels, etc. Thankfully, we never saw any snakes even though we hiked around the property everyday and the creek. The river was nice and peaceful as well, great for fishing.

We loved staying here, very secluded and peaceful. It was me, my wife, and my three dogs. There were friendly cows, beautiful trails, and armadillos. We will definitely be back again. Thank you for being a very accommodating host.

We had an excellent camping experience at Wooded Ways. Bob is very kind host, who is obviously knowledgeable and passionate about spending time outdoors.
The old, one-eyed horse was equally amenable. He stopped by for a bit after breakfast for some apples and good pats. My friend said that was the height of the weekend for him.
The property is still a work in progress (according to Bob), but the developed areas, where we stayed and the survival camp area, were very well laid out and taken care of. Excellent for “easy mode” primitive tent camping.
There some slight highway noise in the distance that’s barely noticeable in the quiet of the night, but light pollution is relatively low. All in all, the property makes for a great escape from civilization for a relatively short drive (from SA/Austin area).
We will definitely be returning in the future and even look forward to trying out a more rustic spot on the property.

We absolutely loved our quick weekend getaway here! It was incredibly easy to access with our truck camper and offered a perfect blend of isolation while still being close to town. The property felt beautifully natural, featuring nice native cacti and trees. The fire pit and provided firewood were a huge bonus on the cool day, making for a cozy evening. We noted the presence of some grazing cows and a few hunting stands, which added to the rustic, natural feel. Highly recommend this spot for an easy, peaceful retreat close to amenities.

Great stay! Plenty of firewood and animal sightings ❤️ Armadillo, javelina, 8 deer, and 3 very nice cows! Lots to explore on the land and being in a fenced area to camp made it super dog friendly. Tired pup!!

Such a wonderful peaceful place. Close enough in town that you can run and grab anything that you need but far enough away to feel like you're really alone. I really appreciated the self-check-in but great communication in case I needed anything. There's a ton of land but I really also love that I was the only one camping. The cows are so friendly and it was such a pleasant surprise to have them greet me throughout my visit. I'll definitely be back!

Loved the spot. Very peaceful, and quite. Plenty of mesquite for shade. If you're trying to get away from the hustle and bustle of the San Antonio, and don't want to go far, look no further. This place check all the right boxes for a primitive campsite.

I had a great experience on my camping trip. I was welcome on site with fire wood and a wonderful story about the lands history. They have two cows on the land that were so friendly. Where I chose to put my tent, unfortunately, had quite a few ants. But other than that, I would recommend this site to anyone.

Really excellent spot! Very secluded and LOTS to explore. Good fence around the campsite area so my dog could do her thing. Will definitely go back in cooler weather!!! Absolutely perfect if you're looking to disconnect and decompress.

Had an awesome weekend at this camp spot. The fire pit was a huge bonus and really made it feel like a true off grid escape, even though it's less than an hour from town. Anthony was great with communication and comes across as a genuinely kind person. The rate is more than fair for what you get. If you're looking for a peaceful spot to unwind without going too far, this place is a solid choice. Highly recommend.

We had a great time camping on Anthony's land. It was quiet, peaceful, and clean with lots of wildlife and trails to explore. We got to meet his two cows, who visited our camp daily. Along with hearing coyote's at night, we saw wild turkeys, vultures, an armadillo, an owl, and various song birds. We hiked his trails and visited the abandoned Picosa Creek Bridge. As a history buff, that was pretty cool. Anthony was a gracious host, who reached out to make sure we found our way okay and that we enjoyed our stay. We would definitely book here again and recommend to our friends.

Where to go
South San Antonio
San Antonio, with its bustling River Walk and UNESCO-listed Alamo, is just an hour north of Three Rivers. Campers can check into an RV park close to downtown, but more scenic options lie south of town. Pitch your tent by Calaveras Lake or Braunig Lake, and catch some catfish to cook over a lakeside campfire.
Hill Country
The rugged peaks and lakes that hem in San Antonio’s northern boundaries mark your arrival in Texas Hill County. Adventurers should head to the Guadalupe River State Park, where river tubing and mountain biking are the activities of choice, while the Government Canyon State Natural Area has walk-in tent campsites surrounded by wilderness. To the east, the Hill Country State Natural Area has trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, as well as backcountry camping.
South Coast
The sandy shores of the Gulf of Mexico lie just an hour’s drive south of Three Rivers. RV parks and beachside campgrounds pepper the coast around Corpus Christi, where you can fish, kayak, or enjoy water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing. There’s camping right on the beach at Mustang Island State Park, while the Padre Island National Seashore is the place to hike through the dunes and spot dolphins and sea turtles along the coast.
When to go
Texan summers are hot and humid, so leave the tent at home and opt for an air-conditioned RV instead. Better yet, plan your camping trip for spring, fall, or winter, when the weather is better suited to outdoor activities. Choke Canyon State Park is busiest during the spring and fall migrations—this is the best time to work through your bird checklist, but campsites can fill up quickly, so book ahead.
Know before you go
- There are no direct public transport links to Three Rivers from San Antonio or Corpus Christi. You’ll need your own transportation to get around.
- Three Rivers has a selection of shops where you can purchase groceries, camping gear, and fishing supplies. Pick up everything you need in town before heading out to Choke Canyon.
- Most Texas state parks require reservations for both day passes and campgrounds, and fishing permits are often required.
