Luxury cabins near Burns guide

Overview

Set in the remote high desert, Burns is a world away from Oregon’s lush coast. Here, you can camp on rugged ranch land or sleep high on Steens Mountain. A short drive away, lose yourself in the Malheur National Forest and the wild Alvord Desert. Sleep in the middle of these natural wonders at the many Burns RV parks and tent camping spots. East of Burns, camp on the water at Lake Owyhee State Park feature. Known for its paddleboarding and kayaking, the park also offers hiking, boating, and fishing. You won’t find full hookups here, but many sites have electricity, water, and picnic tables. There’s also a dump station and a camp store that sells firewood and ice. Hikers and mountain bikers shouldn’t miss the tent and RV camping at Idlewild Campground. Explore the Devine Summit Trail, or try Nordic skiing in the winter. If you’re bringing horses, you’ll love the corrals and posts at Joaquin Miller Campground. Nearby, horse trails wind through the ponderosa forest. South of town, check out the four BLM campgrounds at Steens Mountain. Hike to stunning fall colors in Little Blitzen Gorge, or ride horses into the Big Indian Gorge canyons. In the Donner und Blitzen River, you can fish for redband trout. As you plan, keep in mind that most campsites near Burns are remote; many do not have cell service. Be sure to pack plenty of supplies, and check the location of nearby gas stations. In the winter, a 4WD vehicle and high-quality gear can keep you warm during skiing and hunting trips.
