Once a small town in disrepair, Laurel was determined to rebuild, creating a home town to be proud of. Now, a charmingly renovated downtown greets visitors with colorful storefronts, cozy cafes, and eclectic mercantiles, creating a destination in southeastern Mississippi, north of the larger city of Hattiesburg. The natural scenery is not to be overlooked, as Laurel is situated in Mississippi’s Piney Woods, known for its towering longleaf pines. Tent and RV campsites dot the serene countryside across the region. Or, maybe you’ll find comfortable cabins and glamping getaways perched in the woodlands or on a waterfront. Get off the grid while dry camping in De Soto National Forest or Bienville National Forest, which also offer scenic spots for hiking and paddling. Within an hour’s drive, you’ll also find Paul B. Johnson State Park, Clarkco State Park, and Alabama’s Blandon Springs State Park, which offer recreation and amenities.
